In a 48-page introduction Mead summarizes important considerations of the Balinese character to orient the reader for the 100 plates, containing 759 photographs selected from among 28,000 stills. The photographs were taken by Bateson while Mead made verbal notes on the behavior being photographed. Each plate is accompanied by detailed explanatory captions.
