How to Learn Golf (SIGNED COPY)by: Harry Hurt III

How to Learn Golf (SIGNED COPY)
by: Harry Hurt III

Hardcover. NY, Atria Books, 1st, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, price-clipped dust jacket. INSCRIBED BY HURT on the half-title page. Talk to any and all golfers, be they Tour professionals or once-a-month country clubbers, and you'll hear that they want to improve their game in some way. But up until now, most expert books on golf instruction have focused only on the approach advocated by a particular teaching pro or famous player; the authors usually talk about "the golf swing" or "the putting stroke" as if there is only one way to do it -- their way. With How to Learn Golf, the first comprehensive guide to contemporary golf instruction, Harry Hurt III will help you become a better golfer by identifying what type of player you really are, and which of the several leading methods are right for you and your golfing goals. Based on Hurt's sessions with all of America's top ten instructors, this book helps you choose between the two main types of golf instruction available -- error correction, which offers a quick fix for a specific swing flaw, and swing development, where the focus is on building the swing from top to bottom. Hurt provides illuminating detail on the most effective approaches to improving each aspect of your golf game: putting, the full swing, the short game, and the all-important mental game. Clean copy.

Ty Cobb: A Terrible Beautyby: Leerhsen, Charles

Ty Cobb: A Terrible Beauty
by: Leerhsen, Charles

Hardcover. NY, Simon & Schuster, 1st, 2015, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. 449 pages, b&w illustrations. Ty Cobb is baseball royalty, maybe even the greatest player who ever lived. His lifetime batting average is still the highest of all time, and when he retired in 1928, after twenty-one years with the Detroit Tigers and two with the Philadelphia Athletics, he held more than ninety records. But the numbers don't tell half of Cobb's tale. The Georgia Peach was by far the most thrilling player of the era: "Ty Cobb could cause more excitement with a base on balls than Babe Ruth could with a grand slam," one columnist wrote. When the Hall of Fame began in 1936, he was the first player voted in. But Cobb was also one of the game's most controversial characters. He got in a lot of fights, on and off the field, and was often accused of being overly aggressive. In his day, even his supporters acknowledged that he was a fierce and fiery competitor. Because his philosophy was to "create a mental hazard for the other man," he had his enemies, but he was also widely admired. After his death in 1961, however, something strange happened: his reputation morphed into that of a monster--a virulent racist who also hated children and women, and was in turn hated by his peers. The Last Best League: One Summer One Season One Dream (SIGNED COPY)by: Jim Collins

The Last Best League: One Summer One Season One Dream (SIGNED COPY)
by: Jim Collins

Hardcover. NY, Da Capo Press, 2nd pr., 2004, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket with autographed sticker. SIGNED BY COLLINS on the title page. Inscribed by the author on the front fly leaf. Clean, bright copy. Every summer, in ten small towns across Cape Cod, young college baseball players showcase their talents in hopes of making it to the "show." A vicious filter, the league has produced one out of every six major league players, from Nomar Garciaparra and Todd Helton to Jeff Bagwell and Barry Zito.In this brilliantly crafted narrative, Jim Collins chronicles a season in the life of the Chatham A's, perhaps the most celebrated team in the Cape Cod Baseball League. Set against a seemingly bucolic backdrop--a well-heeled resort town on the bend of the outer Cape -- the story charts the changing fortunes of a handful of players, all of whom battle slumps and self-doubt in an effort to impress major league scouts and make the playoffs. Several players go home with career-threatening injuries; one blue-chip prospect fulfills great expectations while another is dubbed "the biggest disappointment on the Cape." A pitcher hides an arm injury while negotiating a minor league contract; another leaves early to tend to his dying father. And nearly all look to the following year's major league draft as a barometer of their worth.

Schwinn: The Best Present Ever: A Celebration of America's Favorite Bicycle
by: Don Rauf

Hardcover. Lyons Press, 1st, 2017, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, pictorial boards, 142 pages illustrated in color. For many children of the sixties, the gift of a Schwinn was a ticket to freedom, a chance to feel the wind on their face and the steady rotation of rubber at their feet. The Schwinn took many through their childhood adventures, with memories filled of after school, free-range bike rides around the neighborhood with friends, the late afternoon sun shining off of the gleaming painted frame and stainless steel fenders. The 1960s and 70s saw a boom of Schwinn Sting-Rays, which appealed to young riders who had to have the hottest 'muscle' bike in town, and sold like hotcakes to parents everywhere scrambling to get the best Christmas present ever for their kids. From its early years dominating the youth market with Sting-Rays to the teen-friendly Varsity and Continental models to its most recent parent-friendly iterations of the Easy-Steer and Roadster Trikes, the Schwinn weaves itself through 120 years of American history. Karate-Do Nyumon: The Master Introductory Textby: Gichin Funakoshi

Karate-Do Nyumon: The Master Introductory Text
by: Gichin Funakoshi

Hardcover. Tokyo/NY, Kodansha International, 1st, 1988, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. 119 pages, b&w illustrations. Karate-do Nyumon literally means a passage through the gates of the Karate way--in other words, an introduction to the world of Karate. Karate-do Nyumon is the result of Master Funakoshi's wish to clarify Karate thought and practice for those who know nothing about it. It comprises unpublished writings from the years before his death in 1957, together with simplified kata--sequences of movements--synthesized by Funakoshi from the traditional Okinawa Karate-do kata, for beginners.Master Funakoshi begins by exploding some of the myths of Karate- "Karate-do is a noble martial art, and the reader can rest assured that those who take pride in breaking boards or smashing tiles, or who boast of being able to perform outlandish feats like stripping flesh or plucking out ribs, really know nothing about karate. They are playing around in the leaves and branches of a great tree, without the slightest concept of the trunk." Clean copy.

Hardcover. Tokyo/NY, Kodansha International, reprint, 1999, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 256 pages. Nineteen kata ("forms") of karate, the art of self-defense without weapons, are presented here in complete detail. They are the ones selected by the great master and teacher, Gichin Funakoshi, to give comprehensive training in Karate-do, the way of karate. Fully illustrated demonstrations by the translator cover not only every technique of the kata but also the fundamentals and applications: how to make a fist; the correct form of the open hand; preliminary training in blocking, striking and kicking; the seven stances; and sparring. The author presents, besides kata that he himself originated, beginning and advanced kata from both the Shorei school and the Shorin school, the former remarkable for their forcefuless and development of strength, the latter characterized by their gracefulness and lightning swiftness. A Cunning Kind of Play: The Cubs-Giants Rivalry, 1876-1932 by: Wilbert, Warren N.

A Cunning Kind of Play: The Cubs-Giants Rivalry, 1876-1932
by: Wilbert, Warren N.

Jefferson NC, McFarland, 1st, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 250 pages illustrated in b&w. The rivalry between the Chicago Cubs and the New York Giants--the National League's greatest teams in its early days--took hold with the founding of the league in 1876. Between the two bitter rivals there were nine first-second finishes, eight second-third finishes, and 30 out of a possible 65 championships in the league's first six decades. Their games often showcased match-ups between baseball's most talented and toughest players and often had playoff implications. This history of the rivalry begins coverage in 1876 (when the Cubs won the first NL championship) and goes through 1932 (when John McGraw stepped down as manager of the Giants). All of the many great personalities, player match-ups, streaks, and pennant races are included. Clean copy.
