Men, Women & Manners in Colonial Times (2 Volumes)by: Sydney Geo Fisher

Men, Women & Manners in Colonial Times (2 Volumes)
by: Sydney Geo Fisher

Softcover. Bowie MD, Heritage Books, reprint, 2001, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Two softcover volumes 391 & 392 pages. Volumes 1 and 2 complete, a facsimile reprint of the 1897 edition by Lippincott. This two-volume series takes the reader on a journey through the colonies of Virginia, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Maryland, Carolina, and Georgia. The charm of the journey is in its variety, as the reader passes through communities of such striking individuality that they assume the character of different nations. Each colony has a set of opinions and laws peculiar to itself, and it is not uncommon to find the laws of one in contradiction with the laws of another. This text explores the settlement and history of each colony prior to the American Revolution. Topics include development of the colonies' government, laws, religion, schools, boundaries, industries, layout of the cities, fashions, homes, social activities, slavery, architecture, interaction with the Indians, and customs. At least one prominent person from each colony is discussed, amongst them, William Penn of Pennsylvania, John Smith of Virginia, George Calvert of Maryland, and General Oglethorpe of Georgia. Pagans and Philosophers: The Problem of Paganism from Augustine to Leibniz by: Marenbon, John

Pagans and Philosophers: The Problem of Paganism from Augustine to Leibniz
by: Marenbon, John

Hardcover. Princeton NJ, Princeton University Press, 1st, 2015, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 354 pages. From the turn of the fifth century to the beginning of the eighteenth, Christian writers were fascinated and troubled by the "Problem of Paganism," which this book identifies and examines for the first time. How could the wisdom and virtue of the great thinkers of antiquity be reconciled with the fact that they were pagans and, many thought, damned? Related questions were raised by encounters with contemporary pagans in northern Europe, Mongolia, and, later, America and China. Pagans and Philosophers explores how writers-philosophers and theologians, but also poets such as Dante, Chaucer, and Langland, and travelers such as Las Casas and Ricci-tackled the Problem of Paganism. Augustine and Boethius set its terms, while Peter Abelard and John of Salisbury were important early advocates of pagan wisdom and virtue. University theologians such as Aquinas, Scotus, Ockham, and Bradwardine, and later thinkers such as Ficino, Valla, More, Bayle, and Leibniz, explored the difficulty in depth. Meanwhile, Albert the Great inspired Boethius of Dacia and others to create a relativist conception of scientific knowledge that allowed Christian teachers to remain faithful Aristotelians. At the same time, early anthropologists such as John of Piano Carpini, John Mandeville, and Montaigne developed other sorts of relativism in response to the issue. Clean copy.

Papers on Time and Tense by: Arthur N. Prior

Papers on Time and Tense
by: Arthur N. Prior

Hardcover. UK, Oxford University Press , 1st, 1968, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Good, Hardcover, blue cloth with gilt lettering on spine, in a lightly worn rose-color dust jacket with fading to spine, 166 pages. Arthur Prior (1914-1969) undertook pioneering work in intensional logic at a time when modality and intensional concepts in general were under attack. He invented tense logic and was principal theoretician of the movement to apply modal syntax to the formalization of a wide variety of phenomena. Prior and Carew Meredith devised a version of the possible worlds semantics several years before Saul Kripke published his first paper on the topic. An iconoclast and a resourceful innovator, Prior inspired many to undertake work in intensional logic. It was the extra-symbolic world that mattered to Prior, not the formal results per se. Prior was the founding father of logic in New Zealand and also a driving force behind the renaissance in British logic from 1956. Name on front fly leaf, otherwise clean.

Philosophical Commentary on these Words of The Gospel Luke 14:23, "Compel Them to Come In That My House May Be Full' by: Bayle, Pierre

Philosophical Commentary on these Words of The Gospel Luke 14:23, "Compel Them to Come In That My House May Be Full'
by: Bayle, Pierre

Softcover. Indianapolis, Liberty Fund, reprint, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 639 pages. Christian apologists as early as St. Augustine have appealed to Christ's words in Luke 14:23-'Go out into the highways and hedges and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled'- as a mandate for forcible conversion. In 1685, Protestant philosopher and critic Pierre Bayle wrote a compelling and thorough critique of this belief, contending that all coercion in religious matters is morally untenable as being inconsistent with reason. His Philosophical Commentary establishes the case against this supposed literal interpretation of Luke 14:23, arguing that reason must govern all interpretations of Scripture. According to Bayle, the erroneous conscience has the same rights as the enlightened one, his central tenet being a doctrine of mutual toleration grounded in a theory of the morality of conscience-namely, that all God requires is that people act on what seems to them to be the truth. The Classical Foundations of Modern Historiography by: Arnaldo Momigliano/ Riccardo Di Donanto (foreword)

The Classical Foundations of Modern Historiography
by: Arnaldo Momigliano/ Riccardo Di Donanto (foreword)

Hardcover. Berkeley CA, University of California Press, 1st, 1990, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 161 pages. Here, at last, are the long-awaited Sather Classical Lectures of the great historian Arnaldo Momigliano, In a masterly survey of the origins of ancient historiography, Momigliano captures those features of an ancient historian's work that not only gave it importance in its own day but also encouraged imitation and exploitation in later centuries. He reveals the extent to which Greek, Persian, and Jewish historians influenced the Western historiographic tradition, and then goes on to examine the first Roman historians and the emergence of national history. In the course of his exposition, he traces the development of antiquarian studies as distinctive branch of historical research from antiquity to the modern period, discusses the place of Tacitus in historical thought, and explores the way in which ecclesiastical historiography has developed a tradition of its own. All these lectures illustrate Momigliano's unrivaled ability to combine the study of classical texts and the history of classical scholarship. First delivered in 1962, the lectures were revised during the next fifteen years and then held for annotation that was never completed. They are now published from the author's manuscripts, collated and checked by Momigliano's literary executor, Anne Marie Meyer, of the Warburg Institute, with a foreword by Riccardo Di Donato, of the University of Pisa. Name on front fly leaf, light pencil notations to about 30 pages.

by: Swinburne, Richard

Softcover. Oxford UK, Clarendon Press, Revised Ed., 1993, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 312 pages. This book investigates what it means, and whether it is coherent, to say that there is a God. The author concludes that, despite philosophical objections, the claims which religious believers make about God are generally coherent; and that although some important claims are coherent only if the words by which they are expressed are being used in stretched or analogical senses, this is in fact the way in which theologians have usually claimed they are being used. This revised edition includes various minor corrections and clarifications. Name on front fly leaf, otherwise clean.

Contains speeches throughout 1942. This year was a low point of the war, full of setbacks and disappointments across the globe for the British. Throughout the year Churchill's speeches conveyed sober, resolved, and eloquent defiance - with of course an occasional sparkle of Churchillian wit, even in the dark hours of the war. The title of this volume comes from Churchill's 10 November 1942 speech at the Lord Mayor's Day Luncheon in London at a time when fortune finally favored the British with victories in North Africa: "The Germans have received back again that measure of fire and steel which they have so often meted out to others. Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning." Light marking to front endpapers.

The Exodus Pattern in the Bibleby: David Daube

The Exodus Pattern in the Bible
by: David Daube

Hardcover. London, Faber & Faber, 1st, 1963, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 94 pages. David Daube was a scholar of Roman and Jewish law, and his expertise led him to some unique scriptural insights. In this stimulating monograph, Daube argues that the Bible presents the exodus as a judicial proceeding, with Egypt coming under God's judgment for its treatment of the Israelite slaves. He shows that this judicial model explains some unusual details of the narrative. For example, Moses' negotiations with Pharaoh and the fact that Israelite women were given jewelry before their departure are part of implementing the proper procedures for releasing slaves as outlined in Deut 15:13. Daube also brings out parallels in the biblical accounts of Israel's release from Egypt, Jacob's departure from Laban in Gen 31, and the release of the captured ark of the covenant by the Philistines in I Sam 6. Name on front fly leaf, light pencil notations to several pages.

The London Hanged: Crime and Civil Society in the Eighteenth Centuryby: Linebaugh, Peter

The London Hanged: Crime and Civil Society in the Eighteenth Century
by: Linebaugh, Peter

Softcover. Oxford UK, Cambridge University Press , 1st pbk, 1993, Softcover in pictorial wrappers, 484 pages, b&w illustrations. "In eighteenth-century London the gallows at Tyburn was the dramatic focus of a struggle between the rich and the poor. Most of the London hanged were executed for property crimes, and the chief lesson that the gallows had to teach was: 'Respect private property'. The executions took place amid a London populace that knew the same poverty and hunger as the condemned. Indeed, in this stimulating account Peter Linebaugh shows how there was little distinction between a 'criminal' population and the poor population of London as a whole. Necessity drove the city's poor into inevitable conflict with the laws of a privileged ruling class." Clean, bright copy.

The Lucretian Renaissance: Philology and the Afterlife of Traditionby: Passannante, Gerard

The Lucretian Renaissance: Philology and the Afterlife of Tradition
by: Passannante, Gerard

Hardcover. Chicago, University of Chicago Press, 1st, 2011, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 250 pages. With The Lucretian Renaissance, Gerard Passannante offers a radical rethinking of a familiar narrative: the rise of materialism in early modern Europe. Passannante begins by taking up the ancient philosophical notion that the world is composed of two fundamental opposites: atoms, as the philosopher Epicurus theorized, intrinsically unchangeable and moving about the void; and the void itself, or nothingness. Passannante considers the fact that this strain of ancient Greek philosophy survived and was transmitted to the Renaissance primarily by means of a poem that had seemingly been lost--a poem insisting that the letters of the alphabet are like the atoms that make up the universe. Name and date on front fly leaf, light pencil marginalia and a few underlinings.

The Normative Thought of Charles S. Peirceby: Waal, Cornelis De & Krzysztof Piotr Skowronski (eds.)

The Normative Thought of Charles S. Peirce
by: Waal, Cornelis De & Krzysztof Piotr Skowronski (eds.)

Hardcover. NY, Fordham University Press, 1st, 2012, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 321 pages. This volume explores the three normative sciences that Peirce distinguished (aesthetics, ethics, and logic) and their relation to phenomenology and metaphysics. The essays approach this topic from a variety of angles, ranging from questions concerning the normativity of logic to an application of Peirce's semiotics to John Coltrane's A Love Supreme. A recurrent question throughout is whether a moral theory can be grounded in Peirce's work, despite his rather vehement denial that this can be done. Some essays ask whether a dichotomy exists between theoretical and practical ethics. Other essays show that Peirce's philosophy embraces meliorism, examine the role played by self-control, seek to ground communication theory in Peirce's speculative rhetoric, or examine the normative aspect of the notion of truth. Proceedings of a conference held June 26-30, 2007 at Opole University, Poland. Clean copy.

The Papers of John C. Calhoun:A Disquisition on Government and a Discourse on the Constitution and Government of the United States (Vol. XXVIII)by: John C. Calhoun

The Papers of John C. Calhoun:A Disquisition on Government and a Discourse on the Constitution and Government of the United States (Vol. XXVIII)
by: John C. Calhoun

Hardcover. Columbia, University of South Carolina Press, reprint, 2003, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, blue cloth wth gilt lettering on spine, gilt silhouette of Calhoun on cover. 244 pages with index. The Papers of John C. Calhoun, Volume XXVIII is the final volume in a distinguished documentary edition, the first volume of which was published more than fifty years ago. While identical to others in the series in terms of typeface, binding, and letterpress printing, this volume does not contain any of John C. Calhoun's personal papers, rather it features Calhoun's only formal, scholarly writings on political science and political philosophy. A Disquisition on Government is an examination of the first principles of political science, much in the model of Aristotle's Politics or Baron Montesquieu's Spirit of the Laws. It examines basic principles of politics, including concepts of sovereignty and personal liberty and the relationships between states and nations. A Discourse on the Constitution and Government of the United States is a focused study of American political thought and constitutional history since the ratification of the Constitution. It pays particular attention to antifederalist views of the Constitution, the Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions of the 1790s, and the Bill of Rights, the first ten amendments to the Constitution. Caro's monumental The Years of Lyndon Johnson displays all the narrative energy and illuminating insight that led the Times of London to acclaim it as "one of the truly great political biographies of the modem age. A masterpiece." This volume follows Johnson through both the most frustrating and the most triumphant periods of his career. It tells the story of his volatile relationship with John Kennedy and Robert Kennedy during the fight they waged for the 1960 Democratic nomination for president and through Johnson's unhappy vice presidency. It gives us for the first time the story of the assassination from the viewpoint of Lyndon Johnson himself. And with the depth of insight, the profound grasp of both the life and times of his subject that Robert Caro has consistently brought to this mesmerizing biography, it reveals what it was like to suddenly become president in a time of great crisis.

The Revolt Against Dualism: An Inquiry Concerning the Existence of Ideas - The Paul Carus Foundation Lectures IIby: Lovejoy, Arthur O.

The Revolt Against Dualism: An Inquiry Concerning the Existence of Ideas - The Paul Carus Foundation Lectures II
by: Lovejoy, Arthur O.

Hardcover. NY, Open Court/ W.W. Norton, 1st, 1930, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, dark green cloth, gilt lettering on spine, 325 pages. Includes chapters on Bertrand Russell and Alfred North Whitehead. "The Revolt Against Dualism, first published in 1930, belongs to a tradition in philosophical theorizing that Arthur O. Lovejoy called "descriptive epistemology." Lovejoy's principal aim in this book is to clarify the distinction between the quite separate phenomena of the knower and the known, something regularly obvious to common sense, if not always to intellectual understanding. This work is as much an argument about the ineluctable differences between subject and object and between mentality and reality, as it is a subtle polemic against those who would stray far from acknowledging these differences. With a resolve that lasts over three hundred pages, Lovejoy offers candid evaluations of a generation's worth of philosophical discussions that address the problem of epistemological dualism. Name on front fly leaf, pages tanning, otherwise very good, clean copy.
