The Godfather Family Album/40th Anniversary Edition by: Steve Schapiro

The Godfather Family Album/40th Anniversary Edition
by: Steve Schapiro

Hardcover. Taschen , reprint, 2020, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover in pictorial boards. As special photographer on the sets and locations of Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather trilogy, Steve Schapiro had the remarkable experience of witnessing legendary actors giving some of their most memorable performances. Schapiro immortalized Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, James Caan, Robert Duvall, and Diane Keaton in photos that have since become iconic images, instantly recognizable and endlessly imitated. Gathered together in this book are Schapiro's finest photographs from all three Godfather films, lovingly reproduced from the original negatives. With contextual essays and interviews covering the trilogy in its entirety, this book contains over 300 color and black-and-white images. Schapiro's images take us behind the scenes of this epic and inimitable cinematic saga, revealing the director's working process, capturing the moods and personalities involved, and providing insight into the making of movie history. This book is a smaller edition of the 2010 Taschen edition. Still in publisher's shrinkwrap.

The Once Upon a Time World: The Dark and Sparkling Story of the French Riviera by: Miles, Jonathan

The Once Upon a Time World: The Dark and Sparkling Story of the French Riviera
by: Miles, Jonathan

Hardcover. NY, Pegasus Books, 1st, 2023, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. Chronicling two-hundred years of glamour, intrigue, and hedonism, this rich and vivid history of the French Riviera features a vast cast of characters, from Pablo Picasso and Coco Chanel to Andre Matisse and James Baldwin. In 1835, Lord Brougham founded Cannes, introducing bathing and the manicured lawn to the wilds of the Mediterranean coast. Today, much of that shore has become a concrete mass from which escape is an exclusive dream. In the 185 years between, the stretch of seaboard from the red mountains of the Esterel to the Italian border hosted a cultural phenomenon well in excess of its tiny size. A mere handful of towns and resorts created by foreign visitors - notably English, Russian and American - attracted the talented, rich and famous as well as those who wanted to be. For nearly two centuries of creativity, luxury, excess, scandal, war and corruption, the dark and sparkling world of the Riviera was a temptation for everybody who was anybody. Clean copy.

The Vanity Fair Diaries: Power Wealth Celebrity and Dreams: My Years at the Magazine That Defined a Decadeby: Tina Brown

The Vanity Fair Diaries: Power Wealth Celebrity and Dreams: My Years at the Magazine That Defined a Decade
by: Tina Brown

Softcover. NY, Picador, 1st pbk, 2018, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 436 pages, color and b&w photos. It's 1983. A young Englishwoman arrives in Manhattan on a mission. Summoned in the hope that she can save Conde Nast's troubled new flagship Vanity Fair, Tina Brown is plunged into the maelstrom of competitive New York media. She survives the politics and the intrigue by a simple stratagem: succeeding. Here are the inside stories of the scoops and covers that sold millions: the Reagan kiss, the meltdown of Princess Diana's marriage to Prince Charles, the sensational Annie Leibovitz cover of a gloriously pregnant, naked Demi Moore. Written with dash and verve, the diary is also a sharply observed account of New York and London society. In its cinematic pages the drama, comedy and struggle of raising a family and running an 'it' magazine come to life. The irreverent diaries of Tina Brown's eight spectacular years as editor in chief of Vanity Fair. Clean, bright copy.

The War as I Saw It: 1918 Letters of a Tank Corps Lieutenant by: Harvey L. Harris

The War as I Saw It: 1918 Letters of a Tank Corps Lieutenant
by: Harvey L. Harris

Softcover. St. Paul MN, Pogo Press, 1st, 1998, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 158 pages, b&w illustrations. During World War I, soldiers in the American Expeditionary Force rarely fought in the newly developed tank, and those who did manned British and French tanks since American models did not become available until after the war. Harris joined the Tank Corps because it was considered the elite unit of the ground forces and had a certain amount of romance connected with it. Initially assigned as a driving instructor, he later saw action at the St. Mihiel salient and on the Meuse-Argonne front. This book, which offers an extensive preface, summarizing Harris's life before, during, and after the war, along with some penetrating insights into his character, collects 46 letters he wrote home while in service. As they show, Harris saw war as a game not unlike the football games he played in his youth. Although he spent only 18 months in Europe, he looked upon it as a bold adventure, surviving the bad periods and enjoying the better moments. He returned from war apparently unscathed in both body and mind. The letters provide an entertaining if hardly probing portrayal of World War I from a tank officer's point of view. Clean copy.

by: Crapanzano, Vincent

Hardcover. Chicago, University Of Chicago Press, 1st, 1980, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a lightly worn dust jacket. 187 pages. A master of magic and a superb story-teller, Tuhami lives in a dank, windowless hovel near the kiln where he works. Nightly he suffers visitations from the demons and saints who haunt his life, and he seeks, with crippling ambivalence, liberation from 'A'isha Qandisha, the she-demon.
