Setting Sun: Painted Photographs of Meiji Japan (SIGNED COPY)by: Elizabeth A. Burns; Stanley B. Burns

Setting Sun: Painted Photographs of Meiji Japan (SIGNED COPY)
by: Elizabeth A. Burns; Stanley B. Burns

Softcover. NY, Burns Archive Press, 1st, 2017, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 106 pages, color plates throughout. SIGNED/INSCRIBED BY STANLEY BURNS on the title page. Japan, an island nation isolated until the mid-nineteenth century, opened its doors to foreign photographers in the 1860s. These photographers presented a visual cultural kaleidoscope of Japanese life to an eager outside world. The 160 photographs in this volume are curated from tourist albums and presented in the typical sequence. The modern reader will experience Meiji Japan in the way of a nineteenth century armchair traveler. While photographers in other countries were marketing sepia-toned prints, photographers in Japan took advantage of local artists and had their prints exquisitely painted. As with all hand-rendered artworks, quality varied; many photographs were executed so well as to challenge modern color photography. Photographers were limited by government restrictions and many scenes were set in studios rather than in real life. Despite the limitations, tourists visiting the country could purchase albums filled with colorful renditions of Japan's peoples and places. The carefully staged and approved photographs promoted an idealized and romanticized vision of Meiji Japan. Modernization and industrialization changed the country dramatically and the last vestiges of the disappearing feudal culture are captured by the camera. These intriguing photographs are beautiful multi-media artworks representing a vanished world. Clean copy.

by: Don Thompson

Hardcover. NY, Palgrave Macmillan , 6thpr., 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket, 268 pages, color illustrations. Intriguing and entertaining, The $12 Million Stuffed Shark is a Freakonomics approach to the economics and psychology of the contemporary art world. Why were record prices achieved at auction for works by 131 contemporary artists in 2006 alone, with astonishing new heights reached in 2007? The Americansby: Frank, Robert & Jack Kerouac

The Americans
by: Frank, Robert & Jack Kerouac

Hardcover. Gottingen GR, Steidl, 6th pr., 2012, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. A fine copy in a near fine dust wrapper. With an introduction by Jack Kerouac. Robert Frank's The Americans changed the course of twentieth-century photography. In 83 photographs, Frank looked beneath the surface of American life to reveal a people plagued by racism, ill-served by their politicians and rendered numb by a rapidly expanding culture of consumption. Yet he also found novel areas of beauty in simple, overlooked corners of American life. And it was not just Frank's subject matter, cars, jukeboxes and even the road itself that redefined the icons of America; it was also his seemingly intuitive, immediate, off-kilter style, as well as his method of brilliantly linking his photographs together thematically, conceptually, formally and linguistically, that made The Americans so innovative. More of an ode or a poem than a literal document, the book is as powerful and provocative today as it was 75 years ago. A beautiful copy with Steidl kigh quality reproductions.

The Art Detective: Fakes, Frauds, and Finds and the Search for Lost Treasuresby: Philip Mould

The Art Detective: Fakes, Frauds, and Finds and the Search for Lost Treasures
by: Philip Mould

Hardcover. NY, VIking, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket, 261 pages, illustrations. Philip Mould takes a wonderfully interesting look at how art restoration works. But, in looking at restoration of existing paintings, he also delves into how he, as a gallery owner, along with his team, find work that has remained under-valued or unvalued for centuries. And then how that piece, now restored by Mould's experts, ventures back into the art world in renewed glory. Mould takes five or so examples of "found" paintings - one from his "Antique Roadshow" - and writes how instinct and education about a painter, his other work, the painting's subject's history, and other "intangables' go into Mould and his staff taking on an often dirty and undistinguished painting on the chance that the painting is "the real thing" - a real Rembrandt, a real Homer Winslow, etc. Probably the most interesting story was that of a Norman Rockwell painting on display at the Rockwell Museum in Massachusetts that...wasn't. Wasn't the "real" Rockwell painting, but rather one done by a disciple of Rockwell, who copied the original for reasons sort of murky, and donated to the museum. The "real" Rockwell was found by the copier's sons after his death and turned over to the museum. Clean copy.

The Craftsman Builder by: Boericke, Art & Barry Shapiro

The Craftsman Builder
by: Boericke, Art & Barry Shapiro

Hardcover. NY, Simon & Schuster, 1st, 1977, Book: Good, Dust Jacket: Good, Hardcover in a lightly worn dust jacket, 96 pages illustrated with color photos. The book is a photo-journey through the 1970s and documents some of the unusual homes that were constructed during that decade. The pictures include both the interior and exterior of the homes. Boericke had the wonderful opportunity to speak with the owners - many of whom asked to remain anonymous (probably because they lacked formal permission to build!). The handmade houses pictured and described in this book are exactly that - handmade. They reflect the free spirit of the people who lived in them. All of the homes were built with love and the material that was used was either worked by hand using hand tools and all-wood joints or was salvaged from other buildings that were being taken down. Many of the buildings include mismatched doors, windows, and other fixtures that give them a very artsy and eclectic look while the use of tree branches, metal sculpting, and unusual plumbing and lighting add to the overall feel of the buildings themselves. Mild warp to covers, no marking.

The Impending Crisis of the South: How to Meet Itby: Hinton Rowan Helper

The Impending Crisis of the South: How to Meet It
by: Hinton Rowan Helper

Hardcover. NY, Burdick Brothers, reprint, 1857, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, embossed brown cloth with gilt lettering on spine. Ninth thousand. The Impending Crisis is often considered the only popular antislavery work by a southern author prior to the outbreak of the Civil War. Helper (1829-1909)'s argument that "slavery was economically unsound" caused this work to be "officially banned in the South"; in the North, it "vied in popularity and influence with Uncle Tom's Cabin" (Howes). The book stoked fears among southern slaveholders that the "North would promote a class conflict among southern whites," and helped drive many towards secessionism. The Making of the New Deal: The Insiders Speak
by: Louchheim, Katie

Hardcover. Cambridge MA, Harvard University Press, 1st, 1983, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Good, Hardcover in lightly worn dust jacket with sunning to spine, 368 pages. There has never been a phenomenon in American life to equal the invasion of Washington by the young New Dealers, hundreds of men and women still in their twenties and thirties, brilliant and dedicated, trained in the law, economics, public administration, technology, pouring into public life to do nothing less than restructure American society. They proposed new programs, drafted legislation, staffed the new agencies. They were active in the Administration, the Congress, the courts, the news media. They fanned out all over America to discover the facts, plan ways of easing the pain of their foundering country, and report on the results. Many of them went on to be rich, famous, and powerful, but their early experience in Washington was perhaps the most inspiriting of their lives. Katie Louchheim was among those who arrived in Washington in the 1930s, and being a keen writer as well as the wife of a member of the SEC, she had a front-row seat for the spectacle of social progress. Now, a half-century later, she has gathered reminiscences from her old friends and colleagues, interviewed others, and woven them together into a lively, informal word-picture of that exciting time. Thomas Kinkade: The Artist in the Mall by: Boylan, Alexis L. [Editor]

Thomas Kinkade: The Artist in the Mall
by: Boylan, Alexis L. [Editor]

Softcover. Durham NC, Duke University Press, 1st, 2011, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 284 pages, color and b&w illustrations.Often featuring lighthouses, bridges, or quaint country homes, Thomas Kinkade's soft-focus landscapes have permeated American visual culture during the past twenty years, appearing on everything from Bibles to bedsheets to credit cards. Kinkade sells his work through his shopping-mall galleries, QVC, the Internet, and Christian stores. He is quite possibly the most collected artist in the United States. While many art-world and academic critics have dismissed him as a passing fad or marketing phenomenon, the contributors to this collection do not. Instead, they explore his work and its impact on contemporary art as part of the broader history of American visual culture. They consider Kinkade's imagery and career in relation to nineteenth-century Currier and Ives prints and Andres Serrano's Piss Christ, the collectibles market and the fine-art market, the Thomas Kinkade Museum and Cultural Center, and "The Village at Hiddenbrooke," a California housing development inspired by Kinkade's paintings. The conceptual artist Jeffrey Vallance, the curator of the first major museum exhibition of Kinkade's art and collectibles, recounts his experiences organizing that show. All of the contributors draw on art history, visual culture, and cultural studies as they seek to understand Kinkade's significance for both art and audiences. Along the way, they delve into questions about beauty, class, kitsch, religion, and taste in contemporary art. Clean copy.

Two Pioneers: How Hank Greenberg and Jackie Robinson Transformed Baseball And America by: Robert C. Cottrell

Two Pioneers: How Hank Greenberg and Jackie Robinson Transformed Baseball And America
by: Robert C. Cottrell

Hardcover. Washington DC, Potomac Books, 1st, 2012, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 270 pages, b&w illustrations. As the first great Jewish player in the major leagues and the first African American to play major-league baseball during the twentieth century, respectively, Hank Greenberg and Jackie Robinson are forever linked because of the barriers they encountered, the discrimination they endured, the athletic gifts they exhibited, and especially the courage and dignity they displayed. Both suffered ridicule and abuse as they participated in the national pastime. Nevertheless, each excelled. Greenberg became one of the preeminent sluggers of the 1930s and 1940s who took a break from baseball to serve in the war. Robinson, from the mid-1940s into the following decade, helped bring back speed and a thinking man's approach to the game, both of which had largely been discarded for a generation. Two Pioneers presents these remarkable players' experiences while competing in a nation that was deeply divided on social issues such as anti-Semitism and racism. Both men earned nearly as much attention off the field as they did on it. Greenberg called into question the idea of a "master race" as Adolf Hitler rose to power and gained supporters all over the world. Likewise, Robinson contested racial notions regarding the supposed inferiority of people of African ancestry, even though segregationists proved determined to maintain social barriers separating blacks and whites. It is only fitting that when Robinson finally crossed baseball's color line, Greenberg was one of the first players to welcome him publicly. Robert Cottrell's well-researched work shows how two baseball superstars became important figures in the civil rights crusade to ensure that all Americans, no matter their religion or race, are given equal opportunity. U.S. Policy in Central America: The Endless Debateby: Dario Moreno

U.S. Policy in Central America: The Endless Debate
by: Dario Moreno

Hardcover. Miami, University Press of Florida , 1st, 1990, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 186 pages. Under Carter and Reagan, US foreign policy toward Central America failed. In this intriguing study, Dario Moreno explains how policy in those administrations was made, tracing its failure to a foreign policy establishment plagued by division and lack of consensus. Moreno shows that in Nicaragua, El Salvador, Panama, and Cuba, Carter and Reagan played out two dramatically different Third World strategies and that neither Carter's liberal internationalists nor Reagan's rollback theorists understood the reality changes in those countries. Moreno's study draws authenticity from his interviews and discussions with a dozen key Central American policy makers in each of the two administrations and with eminent political figures in Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica, among them, Patricia Derian, assistant secretary of state for human rights under Carter, Elliot Abrams, Reagan's assistant secretary of state for human rights, and former president of Honduras, Jose Azocona. Visual Culture: The Study of the Visual after the Cultural Turn by: Margaret Dikovitskaya

Visual Culture: The Study of the Visual after the Cultural Turn
by: Margaret Dikovitskaya

Hardcover. Cambridge MA, The MIT Press, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 316 pages, b&w illustrations. The history, theoretical frameworks, methodology, and pedagogy of the new field of visual culture; current debates and the possibility for future consensus. In recent years, visual culture has emerged as a growing and important interdisciplinary field of study. Visual culture regards images as central to the representation of meaning in the world. It encompasses "high" art without an assumption of its higher status. But despite the current proliferation of studies and programs in visual culture, there seems to be no consensus within the field itself as to its scope and objectives, definitions, and methods. In Visual Culture, Margaret Dikovitskaya offers an overview of this new area of study in order to reconcile its diverse theoretical positions and understand its potential for further research. Walter Crane: The Illustrators
by: Jenny Uglow

Hardcover. London/NY, Thames & Hudson, 1st, 2019, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, pictorial cloth, 112 pages illustrated in color, b&w. Jenny Uglow narrates the story of Walter Crane, an intriguing and most prolific figure not only in illustration, but in political culture more broadly. Uglow expertly weaves a fascinating study of how Crane's art and politics developed from his childhood love of Pre-Raphaelite painting to the influences of Morris and William Blake on the journals, books, banners, pamphlets and postcards he went on to create as he forged a new style for the international socialist movement. Comprising a staggering range of visual material, Crane's images became a symbolic code that leapt over linguistic boundaries. This book is a brilliant record of an artist who blended styles and influences like no one before him. An exploration of the life and work of Walter Crane, the pioneering British socialist artist who transformed the illustration of children's books. Clean copy.
