Four Novellas of Fear: Eyes That Watch You, The Night I Died, You'll Never See Me Again, Murder Always Gathers Momentumby: Woolrich, Cornell

Four Novellas of Fear: Eyes That Watch You, The Night I Died, You'll Never See Me Again, Murder Always Gathers Momentum
by: Woolrich, Cornell

Softcover. A. J. Cornell Publications , 1st thus, 2018, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 189 pages. Cornell Woolrich, best known as the author of "Rear Window," is unsurpassed in his ability to create and sustain sheer suspense. In his tales of terror, ordinary people find themselves in the most extraordinary circumstances--and, as readers, we share their spine-tingling tension every step of the way. Collected here are four of his most nail-biting novellas: EYES THAT WATCH YOU: Greedy Vera Miller plots her husband's murder right under the nose of her mute, paralyzed mother-in-law. After all, the old lady won't be able to tell anyone about the crime. Or will she? THE NIGHT I DIED: Nice guy Ben Cook, goaded by his scheming common-law wife, fakes his own suicide and moves to another town--all to trick his life insurance company into making a large payout. No one en route or at the new address will recognize him, will they? YOU'LL NEVER SEE ME AGAI": Ed Bliss's new bride, miffed by her husband's insults about her biscuits, promises that Ed will never have to see her again--and storms out! When she doesn't return within a few days, Ed begins to suspect foul play--but when he reports the crime to the police, he's the first one they suspect! MURDER ALWAYS GATHERS MOMENTUM: For his wife's sake, Dick Paine approaches a former employer for back wages he is owed--but things go terribly wrong and the old boss ends up dead. Now the guilt-ridden Paine, who'd never before committed a crime, is convinced that people will figure out what happened. As his paranoia gathers momentum, anyone he meets is at risk of becoming his next victim.

Hornbeam Tree and Other Poems, Theby: Norman/Ted Rand, Chrls

Hornbeam Tree and Other Poems, The
by: Norman/Ted Rand, Chrls

NY, Henry Holt, 1st, 1988, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. Illustrated with color watercolor pictures by Ted Rand. This slim volume includes 19 poems about nature, including 8 about birds, all of which are illustrated with bold, realistic watercolor paintings. The poems describe animal appearance and behavior in natural, clear images that any nature-watcher can understand. The cardinal, for example, ``Tries not to look conspicuous/ In red, but doesn't quite know how,'' and the spaniels have ``Periscope tails and hairy feet.'' Several poems such as ``The Beaver, Alas'' are wry commentaries on human attitudes toward nature. The few poems which try for an arch tone (``Slothful the sloth is certainly noth'') are less successful. Rand's detailed close-up paintings of individual birds and animals and his more humorous montages of animals for poems such as ``At the Zoo'' balance beautifully with the text.

She was lying still and she wasn't breathing." Janet Frame: An Autobiography; Volume One : To the Is-Land, Volume Two : An Angel at My Table, Volume Three : The Envoy from Mirror City/ 3 Volumes in One Book
by: Jan

Softcover. NY, George Braziller, reprint, 1991, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 437 pages. New Zealand's preeminent writer Janet Frame brings the skill of an extraordinary novelist and poet to these vivid and haunting recollections, gathered here for the first time in a single volume. From a childhood and adolescence spent in a poor but intellectually intense railway family, through life as a student, and years of incarceration in mental hospitals, eventually followed by her entry into the saving world of writers and the "Mirror City" that sustains them, we are given not only a record of the events of a life, but also "the transformation of ordinary facts and ideas into a shining palace of mirrors." Frame's journey of self-discovery, from New Zealand to London, to Paris and Barcelona, and then home again, is a heartfelt and courageous account of a writer's beginnings as well as one woman's personal struggle to survive. Small patch of tanning to bottom corner of last 80 pages. Otherwise clean.

Kiss for a Killer (Honey West)
by: G.G. Fickling

Softcover. Woodstock NY, The Overlook Press, reprint, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 208 pages, LA's nerviest, curviest PI is up to her navel in trouble again, and this time she's being framed for murder. The Victims: Honey's boy toy Rip Spensor, a Los Angeles Rams quarterback who got sacked by a steamroller ("ground right into the asphalt"), and Angela Scali, an Italian Hollywood beauty that set out for an innocent weekend at a nudist colony run by some quirky evangelical Christians and ended up hanging dead in a romantic mountain glade ("the grass underneath red with her blood"). What connects the two: Both were associated with a certain blonde gumshoe with an unmistakable 38-22-36 figure and a license to carry. Looks like Honey has gotten caught in a sticky situation . Last Blue: Poemsby: Gerald Stern

Last Blue: Poems
by: Gerald Stern

Hardcover. NY, Norton, 1st, 2001, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket, 112 pages. Stern's 12th collection is his first since winning the 1998 National Book Award for the new and selected This Time. The poems still rely on Stern's inimitable blend of coiled anger, love of life and raffish, on-the-outside-looking-in wit. Poem after poem reflects on what it means to have been a Jew, a Pennslyvanian, a nature-and-weather watcher, a world traveler and, for a longer time than many poets of his stature, an unknown writer during the middle of the last century: "If you can stand Strauss then so can I,/ oh filthy Danube, oh filthy Delaware, oh filthy Allegheny.// And anyone who never opened a Murphy bed/ night after night for seven years without ripping/ the sheet and had neither desk nor dresser can't walk/ in my shoes or wear my crocodile t-shirt." Stern's remembrances are not so much nostalgias as attempts to telescope the speaker's world and worldview through verse-talking, to test everyday language's ability to render his experiences to his liking, or at least his satisfaction.

Letters from Prison by: Marquis De Sade (Author), Richard Seaver (Translator)

Letters from Prison
by: Marquis De Sade (Author), Richard Seaver (Translator)

Hardcover. NY, Arcade Publishing, 1st, 1999, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. 401pages. The 1990s saw a resurgence of interest in the Marquis de Sade, with several biographies competing to put their version of his life story before the public. But Sadean scholar Richard Seaver takes us directly to the source, translating Sade's prison correspondence. Seaver's translations retain the aristocratic hauteur of Sade's prose, which still possesses a clarity that any reader can appreciate. "When will my horrible situation cease?" he wrote to his wife shortly after his incarceration began in 1777. "When in God's name will I be let out of the tomb where I have been buried alive? There is nothing to equal the horror of my fate!" But he was never reduced to pleading for long, and not always so solicitous of his wife's feelings; a few years later, he would write, "This morning I received a fat letter from you that seemed endless. Please, I beg of you, don't go on at such length: do you believe that I have nothing better to do than to read your endless repetitions?" For those interested in learning about the man responsible for some of the most infamous philosophical fiction in history, Letters from Prison is an indispensable collection. Clean copy.

Life isn't everything: Mike Nichols, as remembered by 150 of his closest friendsby: Ash Carter and Sam Kashner

Life isn't everything: Mike Nichols, as remembered by 150 of his closest friends
by: Ash Carter and Sam Kashner

Hardcover. NY, Henry Holt, 1st, 2019, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. An up close and personal portrait of a legendary filmmaker, theater director, and comedian, drawing on candid conversations with his closest friends in show business and the arts-from Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep to Natalie Portman and Lorne Michaels. The work of Mike Nichols pervades American cultural consciousness-from The Graduate and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? to Angels in America, The Birdcage, Working Girl, and Primary Colors, not to mention his string of hit plays, including Barefoot in the Park and The Odd Couple. If that weren't enough, he was also one half of the timelessly funny duo Nichols & May, as well as a founding member of the original improv troupe. Over a career that spanned half a century, Mike Nichols changed Hollywood, Broadway, and comedy forever. Most fans, however, know very little of the person behind it all. Since he never wrote his memoirs, and seldom appeared on television, they have very little sense of his searching intellect or his devastating wit. They don't know that Nichols, the great American director, was born Mikail Igor Peschkowsky, in Berlin, and came to this country, speaking no English, to escape the Nazis. They don't know that Nichols was at one time a solitary psychology student, or that a childhood illness caused permanent, life-altering side effects. They don't know that he withdrew into a debilitating depression before he "finally got it right," in his words, by marrying Diane Sawyer. Remainder dot to bottom edge otherwise clean.

Making Certain It Goes on: The Collected Poems of Richard Hugo
by: Hugo Richard; Kittredge, William Introduction

Hardcover. NY, Norton, 2nd pr., 1984, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket, 456 pages. This increasingly uncommon collection of Hugo's published poetry also contains 22 new poems not previously collected. 456 pages, indexed. This posthumously published book of Hugo's collected poetry evinces that Hugo's poems are marked by crisp, gorgeous images of nature that often stand in contrast to his own depression, loneliness, and alcoholism. Although almost always written in free verse, his poems have a strong sense of rhythm that often echoes iambic meters. He also wrote of large number of informal epistolary poems at a time when that form was unfashionable. Primarily a regionalist, Hugo's work reflects the economic depression of the Northwest, particularly Montana.
