The Rohan Master:A Book of Hoursby: Marcel Thomas [Editor]; Millard Meiss [Introduction];

The Rohan Master:A Book of Hours
by: Marcel Thomas [Editor]; Millard Meiss [Introduction];

Hardcover. NY, George Braziller, 1st, 1973, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, red cloth covers stamped in gilt, in a black cardboard slipcase. Color illustrations throughout. This powerful and breathtakingly beautiful Book of Hours was designed in the fifteenth century by one of the greatest masters of expressionism in France at the time, and executed by him (together with members of his workshop) for a royal patron. A relatively unknown masterpiece, it emerged from artistic obscurity in 1904 to widespread acclaim and critical appreciation. As Millard Meiss points out in his Introduction: "The Rohan Master cared less about what people do than what they feel. . . .Whereas his great predecessors, the Boucicaut Master and the Limbourgs, excelled in the description of novel aspects of the natural world, he explored the realm of human feeling." The Signifying Monkey: A Theory of African American Literary Criticism by: Gates Jr, Henry Louis

The Signifying Monkey: A Theory of African American Literary Criticism
by: Gates Jr, Henry Louis

Softcover. NY, Oxford University Press, repriny, 1989, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 290 pages. Henry Louis Gates, Jr.'s original, groundbreaking study explores the relationship between the African and African-American vernacular traditions and black literature, elaborating a new critical approach located within this tradition that allows the black voice to speak for itself. Examining the ancient poetry and myths found in African, Latin American, and Caribbean culture, and particularly the Yoruba trickster figure of Esu-Elegbara and the Signifying Monkey whose myths help articulate the black tradition's theory of its literature, Gates uncovers a unique system for interpretation and a powerful vernacular tradition that black slaves brought with them to the New World. His critical approach relies heavily on the Signifying Monkey--perhaps the most popular figure in African-American folklore--and signification and Signifyin(g). Exploring signification in black American life and literature by analyzing the transmission and revision of various signifying figures, Gates provides an extended analysis of what he calls the "Talking Book," a central trope in early slave narratives that virtually defines the tradition of black American letters. Gates uses this critical framework to examine several major works of African-American literature--including Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God, Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man, and Ishmael Reed's Mumbo Jumbo--revealing how these works signify on the black tradition and on each other. The Sixties
by: Avedon, Richard and Doon Arbus

Hardcover. NY, Random House, 1st, 1999, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 240 pages. The Sixties is the product of a 30-year collaboration between photographer Richard Avedon and writer Doon Arbus, whose images and words combine in this volume to create a compelling portrait of one of the 20th century's most tumultuous decades. Avedon, the celebrated photographer whose portraits of some of the best-known personalities of our age have graced the pages of Harper's Bazaar, Vogue, and The New Yorker magazines since the early 1950s, was prolific during the '60s. Looked at together, his images from those years create a visual time capsule. This large book is filled with a cacophony of Yippies, Black Panthers, Weathermen, Hare Krishnas, Andy Warhol Factory Superstars, pop artists, rock musicians, astronauts, pacifists, politicians, electroshock therapists, media correspondents, civil rights lawyers, antiwar activists, and more--all shot against his signature white background. Arbus, a novelist and writer for magazines including Rolling Stone and The Nation (and the daughter of photographer Diane Arbus), conducted interviews with many of the subjects. Snippets of those conversations provide an intimate and unforgettable document of the tension, vulnerability, anger, recklessness, hope, and empowerment many people experienced during that era. Brief biographies of the portrait sitters, as well as a chronology that spans the first signs of the war in Vietnam in 1960 to its final conclusion in 1973, provide excellent context for the images.

The Star Makers: On Set with Hollywood's Greatest Directorsby: Willoughby, Bob/ Sydney Pollack (Intro.)

The Star Makers: On Set with Hollywood's Greatest Directors
by: Willoughby, Bob/ Sydney Pollack (Intro.)

Hardcover. London, Merrell, 1st, 2003, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 351 pages, color and b&w plates. This book collects Willoughby's candid photographs from the sets of various great films since the 1950s. Also included are filmographies of the directors with whom he has worked. As the subtitle indicates, he really has collaborated with many of the great cinema luminaries. Beginning with Vincente Minnelli, they include Orson Welles, William Wellman, George Stevens, Mike Nichols, William Wyler, Alfred Hitchcock, and others. The most interesting aspect of this book is indisputably the photos (most of them black and white), many of which were shot in informal settings, showing directors and actors in seemingly unguarded moments. He made himself seem invisible, Willoughby said, by blending in with the movie crew, once he realized they were invisible to the actors.

The Sweeter Side of R. Crumbby: Crumb, R.

The Sweeter Side of R. Crumb
by: Crumb, R.

Softcover. New York, W. W. Norton & Company, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 110 pages, illustrated throughout in b&w. Clean, unmarked copy in excellent condition. The "nasty, negative, misanthropic" comic genius proves he has a sweet side. Cute little kittens, angels, and babies? Flowers, ice cream cones, and German boy bands? Coming from, supposedly, the creepiest and most pessimistic artist of his generation? Yes indeed, there is a "sweeter side" to R. Crumb. These delectable illustrations-whether depicting Bernie the Cat pawing for his master's affection, the timeworn beauty of a French village cul-de-sac, or a quiet night chez Crumb-wonderfully exemplify the many tender moments that have, until now, played second fiddle to the cult icon's more raunchy sketches. Now Crumb harkens back to his humble American beginnings as a Cleveland greeting card illustrator, when his innate knack for the grotesque had to be suppressed for the perennial appeal of "cute." The result is this cheery and blue-skied world, where readers of every conceivable personality type, age group, even sexual persuasion can finally enjoy the artist's momentary lapse from naughty to nice. Color and black-and-white illustrations throughout
