Polly and Her Pals: Complete Sunday Comics 1928-1930
by: Cliff Sterrett (Author, Cover Design, Artist)

Hardcover. San Diego CA , IDW Publishing, 1st, 2016, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover. Extensive color illustrations by Cliff Sterrett throughout. Clean, unmarked copy. Sterrett whimsically played with every element of his feature, and was blissfully free of self-conciousness or restraint. Like all truly great comedians, he often recruits the reader, and lets them in on the gag as it plays out, while the actual characters are clueless. It's a deceptively complicated comedic gift. Other times its pure slapstick, with the unvarnished roughness and outrageous takes that characterized the period, but it's still out laugh loud funny, and honestly, when's the last time you really laughed at a comic strip? Sterrett stretched the limits of comics with the freedom that accompanied an art form yet to deigned respectable, and he produced one of the most personally stamped features in comic strip history.

Changing his name to Scaasi (Isaacs spelled backwards), he quickly rose to fame, first with ready-to-wear creations and later with extravagant couture for women willing to spend $6000 -$20,000 for a dress-stars such as Joan Crawford, Barbra Streisand and Elizabeth Taylor; socialites Charlotte Ford, Blaine Trump and Brooke Astor. First ladies from Mamie Eisenhower to Barbara Bush have been dressed by him. Replete with 100 color photographs of models and celebrities wearing the designer's exuberant clothes, this lavish book, which includes brief descriptions of Scaasi's working methods and accounts of his friendships with his affluent clients, provides a tantalizing glimpse of the world of high fashion.

The Midnight Ride of Paul Revereby: Henry Wadsworth Longfellow / Christopher Bing (Illust.)

The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere
by: Henry Wadsworth Longfellow / Christopher Bing (Illust.)

Hardcover. Brooklyn NY, Handprint, 1st, 2001, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover with illustrated boards, 40 pages. n his magnificent interpretation of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow s poem, Christopher Bing seamlessly weaves history and imagination into a rich portrait of an American hero. A meticulous researcher, Bing includes material that provides texture to history, maps that follow the British campaign to quell the rebellious citizenry, as well as the patriot s ride into the Massachusetts night of April, 1775. Documents firmly affixed into the book, including the British general s orders to his troops and Revere s own deposition relating the events, give the reader not only a visual experience but a tactile one as well. Far more than a brilliantly presented history lesson, this book represents a tour de force of coherent artistic vision. In an extraordinary series of rich and moody engravings, from the mysteriously shimmering rigging of the British sloop, The Somerset, looming in a moonlit Boston harbor to the taut urgency of a man and his horse galloping at a combustible moment in the American experience, this book illuminates our country s past unlike any other. Small inscription on inside front cover, otherwise clean.

The West That Wasby: Eggen, John E.

The West That Was
by: Eggen, John E.

Hardcover. Schiffer Publishing, 1st, 1997, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, pages. Much of early Americana has been destroyed and lost forever. But occasionally, and almost miraculously, some parts of its survive. So it is with the photographs in this book. Saved from an ignominious end in the city dump, they chronicle and enliven the cowboy's life on the range. The result is a beautiful volume of real-life images of western cattlemen. These unretouched photographs taken from the original 5" x 7" negatives give an unprecedented look at life on the ranch and trail. We are presented with real people seen on the job. We see the costumes, the work, the everyday necessities of the range. And as the cowboys stare back at the camera or work with one another, the reader will get the sense of knowing them and their way of living. This is an important volume of history that every student of the Old West will cherish.
