Lucian Freud: The Self-Portraitsby: Lucian Freud, Jasper Sharp, et al.

Lucian Freud: The Self-Portraits
by: Lucian Freud, Jasper Sharp, et al.

Hardcover. London, Royal Academy of Arts, 1st, 2019, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, pictorial cloth. No dj issued. In 1964 Lucian Freud set his students at the Norwich College of Art an assignment: to paint naked self-portraits and to make them "revealing, telling, believable ... really shameless." It was advice that the artist was often to follow himself. Visceral, unflinching and often nude, Freud's self-portraits chart his biography and give us an insight into the development of his style. These paintings provide the viewer with a constant reminder of the artist's overwhelming presence, whether he is confronting the viewer directly or only present as a shadow or in a reflection. Freud's exploration of the self-portrait is unexpected and wide-ranging. In this volume, essays by leading authorities, including those who knew him, explore Freud's life and work, and analyze the importance of self-portraiture in his practice.

Marcia Resnick: As It Is or Could Be by: Resnick, Marcia

Marcia Resnick: As It Is or Could Be
by: Resnick, Marcia

Hardcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, 1st, 2022, Book: Very Good, Hardcover, pictorial boards, Photographer Marcia Resnick (b. 1950) earned recognition as part of the legendary Downtown New York art scene of the 1970s and 1980s. Her portraits of the era's major cultural figures, such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, John Belushi, and Susan Sontag, have contributed to the scene's mythic status. Against this backdrop, Resnick also produced a significant body of work that engaged with the history of art, took a humorous approach to conceptual art and feminism, and proposed new ideas for what photography could be. Spanning the artist's career, this richly illustrated volume explores Resnick's early influences and education at Cooper Union and CalArts; discusses her series and photobooks such as See and Re-visions; and situates the artist's work within the history of contemporary art. An afterword by Laurie Anderson speaks to the very personal vision of Resnick's photography. Still in publisher's shrinkwrap.

Margaret Bourke-White and the Dawn of Apartheidby: Lichtenstein, Alex

Margaret Bourke-White and the Dawn of Apartheid
by: Lichtenstein, Alex

Hardcover. Bloomington, IN, Indiana University Press, 1st, 2016, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 152 pages. Hardcover with dust jacket. A very clean, unmarked copy with only minor wear to dust jacket edges. A tight copy. As a photographer for Life and Fortune magazines, Margaret Bourke-White traveled to Russia in the 1930s, photographed the Nazi takeover of Czechoslovakia in 1938, and recorded the liberation of Buchenwald at the end of WWII. In 1949, Life sent her to South Africa to take photographs in a country that was becoming racially polarized by white minority rule. Life published two photo-essays highlighting Bourke-White's photographs, but much of her South African work remained unpublished until now. Here, these stunning photographs collected by Alex Lichtenstein and Rick Halpern offer an unparalleled visual record of white domination in South Africa during the early days of apartheid. In addition to these powerful and historically significant photographs, Lichtenstein and Halpern include two essays that explore Bourke-White's artistic and political formation and provide background material about the cultural, political, and economic circumstances that produced the rise and triumph of Afrikaner nationalism in South Africa. This richly illustrated book brings to light a large body of photography from a major American photographer and offers a compelling history of a reprehensible system of racial conflict and social control that Bourke-White took such pains to document.

Maripolaramaby: Anna Sui (Author), Glenn O'Brien (Author, Introduction), Diego Cortez (Author, Afterword)

Maripolarama
by: Anna Sui (Author), Glenn O'Brien (Author, Introduction), Diego Cortez (Author, Afterword)

Hardcover. NY, powerHouse, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, pictorial boards, 128 pages. During the early 80s, New York's Lower East Side was a hotbed of creative activity. Unknown artists were synthesizing the fertile ground at the legendary New York nightclubs Studio 54, the Mudd Club, Club 57, Palladium, and Danceteria while on their way to international fame and acclaim. Among those emerging were Madonna, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Grace Jones, Keith Haring, Kenny Scharf, Vincent Gallo, Anna Sui, Exene Cervenka, Kid Creole, and Diego Cortez. Maripol was part of a collective of artists, graffiti writers, street dancers, and performers who all thrived together in the explosive downtown eccentricity. As an image maker and stylist for Madonna during her "Like a Virgin" days, jewelry designer, art director, and producer Maripol relentlessly documented the movers and shakers of the early 80s scene through the lens of her instant Polaroid SX-70. Collected for the first time in Maripolarama, Maripol's photographs vividly depict the extraordinary personalities that inhabited the "forever" hip, arty Manhattan clubland during the post-punk era when hip hop was in its earliest stages and graffiti covered the landscape. Whether it's Andy Warhol, Debbie Harry, Basquiat, or Madonna modeling a bright pink wig, Maripolarama provides lively and inspiring insight into a time long gone.

Maverix and Lunatix: Icons of Underground Comix
by: Drew Friedman (Author), Patrick Rosenkranz (Afterword), Marc Maron (Foreword)

Hardcover. Seattle, Fantagraphics , 1st, 2022, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, pictorial boards, 214 pages. Perverted, Insane, Degenerate, Brilliant. Artist Drew Friedman pays tribute to the great underground comix creators from Z (Zap) to A (Arcade). With the publication of R. Crumb's debut issue of Zap in 1968, the Underground Comix revolution exploded, creating a major paradigm shift and blowing the lid off the traditional comic book. Maverix and Lunatix features 101 full page portraits (and more) by a cartooning icon in his own right, Drew Friedman, spotlighting the essential artists, writers, and editors who defined one of the great art and countercultural movements of the 20th century. Featuring R. Crumb, Gilbert Shelton, S. Clay Wilson, Melinda Gebbie, Art Spiegelman, Vaughn Bode, Trina Robbins, Bill Griffith, Jay Lynch, Sharon Rudahl, Larry Gonick, Rick Veitch, Joyce Farmer, Justin Green, "Grass" Green, George DiCaprio, Diane Noomin, Harvey Pekar, Robert Williams, Howard Cruse, Dan O'Neill, Spain Rodriguez, Shary Flenniken, Richard Corben, and so many others... all of whom helped to reinvent an entire artistic medium and became icons of underground comix. Featuring a foreword by Marc Maron (WTF with Marc Maron) and an afterword by historian Patrick Rosenkranz (Rebel Visions: The Underground Comix Revolution 1963-1975), each portrait in Maverix and Lunatix is also accompanied by a short biography of its subject by Friedman, making the book both a gorgeous art book and a valuable historical resource.

Paperback. New York, Welcome Books, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, 287 pages. Hardcover with no dust jacket. A very clean, unmarked copy with only minor edgewear. Holographic photograph on front cover. In 1984, photographer Peter Feldstein set out to photograph every single resident of his town, Oxford, Iowa (pop. 676). He converted an abandoned storefront on Main Street into a makeshift studio and posted fliers inviting people to stop by. At first they trickled in slowly, but in the end, nearly all of Oxford stood before Feldstein's lens. Twenty years later, Feldstein decided to do it again. Only this time he invited writer Stephen G. Bloom to join him, and together they went in search of the same Oxford residents Feldstein had originally shot two decades earlier. Some had moved. Most had stayed. Others had passed away. All were marked by the passage of time.

Pop Art Portraitsby: Paul Moorhouse and Dominic Sandbrook

Pop Art Portraits
by: Paul Moorhouse and Dominic Sandbrook

Hardcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 192 pages. Reaching its pinnacle during the era of Marilyn Monroe and James Bond, Haight-Ashbury and Swinging London, Pop art reflected the ideals and aspirations of a generation. By the 1960s the movement's bold imagery and style had become inseparable from the new consumer culture. This important book looks at British and American Pop art through the lens of portraiture, providing a fresh perspective on the movement and its innovative artists. Blurring the boundaries between "high" and "low" culture, Pop artists including Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Richard Hamilton, and Peter Blake elevated portraiture to a new position. Author Paul Moorhouse explores the artists' engagement with portraits; their shared fascination with fame; their use of images from advertisements, rock music, films, and print sources; and the ways in which the British and American schools of Pop evolved and influenced one another. Bringing together key works from the peak years of Pop, this extensively illustrated book demonstrates how the conventions of portraiture were redefined as Pop artists transformed familiar images into transcendent works of art.

Portrait of the Art World: A Century of ARTnews Photographsby: William F. Stapp

Portrait of the Art World: A Century of ARTnews Photographs
by: William F. Stapp

Hardcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press , 1st, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 184 pages. ARTnews, the oldest art magazine in America and the most widely circulated art magazine in the world, is celebrating its one-hundredth anniversary in 2002. This attractive book celebrates and commemorates this milestone event, presenting one hundred of the best photographic portraits commissioned by and reproduced in the magazine since its origin. These fascinating photographs chronicle the history of the magazine and present a "who's who" of people who have shaped the art world over the last century. Portrait of the Art World includes photographs of many of the great European and American artists of the twentieth century, including George Bellows, Francis Bacon, Pablo Picasso, Piet Mondrian, Jackson Pollock, Alexander Calder, and Alice Neel. The photographers-often as fascinating as their subjects-range from Zaida Ben-Yusuf, Alice Boughton (early members of Alfred Stieglitz's circle), and Jessie Tarbox Beals (perhaps the first woman photojournalist) to Stieglitz himself, Man Ray, and Cecil Beaton. Contemporary photographers featured in the book include Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, Arnold Newman, Richard Avedon, and Robert Mapplethorpe. The book also presents an essay by William F. Stapp exploring the historical context of portrait photography in ARTnews; an essay on the history of ARTnews by Pete Hamill; and an essay by Milton Esterow, the current editor and publisher of ARTnews, discussing his personal view of the magazine. This handsomely illustrated book is the catalogue for an exhibition at the New-York Historical Society from September 27, 2002, to January 5, 2003, which will then travel to Washington, Chicago, and San Francisco

Reflections/Refractions: Self-Portraits in the Twentieth Century by: Reaves, Wendy Wick / Anne Collins Goodyear

Reflections/Refractions: Self-Portraits in the Twentieth Century
by: Reaves, Wendy Wick / Anne Collins Goodyear

Hardcover. Washington DC, Smithsonian Institution Scholarly Press , 1st, 2009, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. At least since the Renaissance, artists have created wonderful images of themselves. Some self-portraits are the equivalent of a painter's "signature," while others were inspired by the need to establish social status or gain a commission. In the twentieth century, however, self-representation turned inward, becoming a means by which artists sought to navigate passageways of the mind. In Reflections/Refractions, some of the greatest modern artists--including Andy Warhol, Edward Hopper, Grant Wood, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Jacob Lawrence, Louise Bourgeois, David Hockney, Alexander Calder, and Alex Katz--use sinuous line and gorgeous color to trace the intricacies of their personalities, whether dark and gloomy or bright and fanciful. The book is at once a catalog of twentieth-century self-portraits in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, and an exploration of how modern artists view themselves and the world. Eighty color illustrations--drawings and paintings--are accompanied by lively and informative captions, making this volume an endlessly fascinating book. Clean copy.
