Hardcover. NY, Schwartz & Wade, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 40 pages. Newbery Honor-winning author McKissack and Caldecott Medal-winning illustrator Pinkney have outdone themselves in this heart-warming picture book infused with humor and the true spirit of Christmas. Christmas always comes to Nella's house, but Santa Claus brings gifts only once in a while. That's because it's the Depression and Nella's family is poor. Even so, Nella's hoping that this year she and her two sisters will get a beautiful Baby Betty doll. On Christmas morning, the girls are beside themselves with excitement! There is Baby Betty, in all her eyelash-fluttering magnificence. "Mine!" Nella shouts, and claims the doll for herself. But soon she discovers that Baby Betty isn't nearly as much fun as her sisters. SIGNED BY PINKNEY.

The Bear That Wasn'tby: Tashlin, Frank

The Bear That Wasn't
by: Tashlin, Frank

Hardcover. NY, NYR Children's Collection, reprint, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, pictorial boards with red cloth spine. "Once upon a time, in fact it was Tuesday," the Bear went into the woods to settle in for his long winter nap. But when he awoke what had happened? The trees were gone, the grass was gone, the flowers were gone, and in their place were buildings, cars, a fenced-off courtyard. The Bear had no idea that he was in the middle of a factory. "Get back to work!" a man yelled out of the blue. "I don't work here," said the Bear, "I'm a bear." The man laughed and laughed. "Fine excuse for a man to keep from doing any work--saying he's a bear." And so it began and so it went, with the Bear protesting his bearness all the way from the Third Vice President to the First, and no one willing to believe that he wasn't just a silly man in a fur coat who needed a shave. How the bear endured and how he finally prevailed are the subject of this delightful modern fairy tale--beautifully illustrated with the author's inventive line drawings--about sticking up for yourself, no matter how many Foremen, General Managers, Vice Presidents, or even Company Presidents stand in your way. Reprint of this classic originally published in 1946.

The Brave Little Tailorby: Brothers Grimm/Eve Tharlet

The Brave Little Tailor
by: Brothers Grimm/Eve Tharlet

Hardcover. Saxonville MA, Picture Book Studio, 1st, 1989, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, glazed boards with a black cloth spine. Color illustrations by Eve Tharlet, translation by Athena Bell. Children will be charmed by Bell's translation of the tale about the tailor who advertised his prowess by embroidering a sash proclaiming "Seven at a Blow." The narrative respects the original story; the text is not diluted, and it is lengthy. Vocabulary such as courtiers, contemptuously, and desperate adds to the vitality of the story. The settings and clothing in Tharlet's detailed and appropriate soft-toned watercolor washes suggest the Middle Ages.
