Henri Cartier-Bresson in China: 1948-1949/1958 by: Michel Frizot/Ying-lung Su

Henri Cartier-Bresson in China: 1948-1949/1958
by: Michel Frizot/Ying-lung Su

Hardcover. London/NY, Thames & Hudson, 1st, 2019, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket The first visual chronicle of a little-known chapter in the career of Henri Cartier-Bresson--one of the great photographers of the twentieth century. In December 1948, Henri Cartier-Bresson traveled to China at the request of Life magazine. He wound up staying for ten months and captured some of the most spectacular moments in China's history: he photographed Beijing in "the last days of the Kuomintang," and then headed back to Shanghai, where he bore witness to the new regime's takeover. Moreover, in 1958, Henri Cartier-Bresson was one of the first Western photographers to go back to China to explore the changes that had occurred over the preceding decade. The "picture stories" he sent to Magnum and Life on a regular basis played a key role in Westerners' understanding of Chinese political events. Many of these images are among the best-known and most significant photographs in Cartier-Bresson's oeuvre; his empathy with the populace and sense of responsibility as a witness making them an important part of his legacy. This volume allows these photographs to be reexamined along with all of the documents that were preserved: the photographer's captions and comments, contact sheets, and abundant correspondence, as well as the published versions that appeared in both American and European magazines. Clean copy. DOMESTIC SHIPPING ONLY.

This lavishly illustrated book is the history of China, spanning the pre-revolutionary years to China's present day rise as a global power as told through the Magnum photo agency's legendary photographs. Chronologically organized into four parts, charting the history of China from 1933 to the present day, Magnum China presents in-depth portfolios by individual photographers, accompanied by introductory commentaries on the featured work and group selections that curate individual photographs to illustrate the diverse state of China. Each part also features an introduction by respected scholar Jonathan Fenby, as well as "key dates" timelines and lists of the photographers' travels, setting the socio-political and historical context for the photography on show. Origins of the Chinese Avant-Garde: The Modern Woodcut Movementby: Xiaobing Tang

Origins of the Chinese Avant-Garde: The Modern Woodcut Movement
by: Xiaobing Tang

Hardcover. Berkeley CA, University of California Press, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 318 pages. In Origins of the Chinese Avant-Garde, Xiaobing Tang studies the art and art theories of the first half of the twentieth century, when modern Chinese art and literature emerged. He argues that the most consequential expression of the avant-garde was the modern woodcut movement that thrived in China in the 1930s. In this innovative study--also the first comprehensive account of this Chinese movement available in English--Tang examines the aesthetic, intellectual, and social appeal of the modern woodcut and places the movement at the intersection of historical events, individual efforts, and competing discourses on art. He also shows how the woodcut movement drew upon international inspiration--from German Expressionism, Soviet wood engravings, and Japanese creative prints.

Other Modernities: Gendered Yearnings in China after Socialismby: Rofel, Lisa

Other Modernities: Gendered Yearnings in China after Socialism
by: Rofel, Lisa

Softcover. Berkeley, University of California Press, 1st, 1999, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 330 pages. In this analysis of three generations of women in a Chinese silk factory, Lisa Rofel brilliantly interweaves the intimate details of her observations with a broad-ranging critique of the meaning of modernity in a postmodern age.The author based her study at a silk factory in the city of Hangzhou in eastern China. She compares the lives of three generations of women workers: those who entered the factory right around the Communist revolution in 1949, those who were youths during the Cultural Revolution of the 1970s, and those who have come of age in the Deng era. Exploring attitudes toward work, marriage, society, and culture, she convincingly connects the changing meanings of the modern in official discourse to the stories women tell about themselves and what they make of their lives. Clean.

Softcover. Beijing, China Tibetology Publishing House, 1st, 2014, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 224 pages. "The publication of Dr. Ben Jiao's dissertation in China is a welcome addition to the growing literature in China about Tibetan culture and society as well as an excellent example of how anthropological approaches and frameworks can bring penetrating analyses to our understanding of complex social institutions.
