Hume and the Heroic Portrait: Studies in Eighteenth-Century Imagery by: Wind, Edgar / Edited By Jaynie Anderson

Hume and the Heroic Portrait: Studies in Eighteenth-Century Imagery
by: Wind, Edgar / Edited By Jaynie Anderson

Hardcover. Oxford UK, Clarendon Press, 1st, 1986, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a very good dust jacket with light fading to dj spine. 139 pages of text, 124 b&w plates in rear section. This is the second volume of Edgar Wind's selected papers, a companion to The Elegance of Symbols. Of all the scholars associated with the early development of the Warbur Institute Edgar Wind was the first to apply different theoretical principles to the study of English Art, above all in his early study of English portraiture, now a classic art history text. As the seminal essay, it gives title to the present volume, and is here translated into English for the first time. In this essay, which marked a change of direction in Wind's own development, he argues that two opposing styles of portraiture, exemplified in the art of Gainsborough and Reynolds, can be related to the different notions of humanity subscribed to by the philosophers David Hume and James Beattie. Other important studies, also reprinted here, make this volume an excellent resource to Wind's tremendous contributions to art history. Clean copy.

Hardcover. London, Cambridge University Press, 1st, 1989, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 408 pages. Jipping Street - Childhood in a London Slum
by: Woodward/Leon Underwood, Kathleen

Hardcover. NY, Harper and Brothers, 1st, 1928, Book: Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, blue boards with blue cloth spine. Tipped in frontis by Leon Underwood. Light edgewear, rubbing to cover label, spine label mostly gone, stamp on front fly leaf. 150 pages. At the age of 12, Woodward (1896-1961) had begun working in a London factory, and just one year later she had left home to take up another factory job making collars for men's shirts. Jipping Street is "a graphic and absorbing account of growing-up in a London slum in the late 19th and early 20th centuries... John Calvin's Ideas
by: Helm, Paul

Softcover. Oxford UK, Oxford University Press, 1st pbk, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 438 pages. This is a major study of the theological thought of John Calvin, which examines his central theological ideas through a philosophical lens, looking at issues in Metaphysics, Epistemology, and Ethics. The study, the first of its kind, is concerned with how Calvin actually uses philosophical ideas in his work as a theologian and biblical commentator. The book also includes a careful examination of those ideas of Calvin to which the Reformed Epistemologists appeal, to find grounds and precedent for their development of `Reformed Epistemology', notably the sensus divinitatis and the internal testimony of the Holy Spirit. John Locke, Toleration and Early Enlightenment Culture (Cambridge Studies in Early Modern British History)by: Marshall, John

John Locke, Toleration and Early Enlightenment Culture (Cambridge Studies in Early Modern British History)
by: Marshall, John

Hardcover. Cambridge UK, Cambridge University Press, 1st, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 767 pages. 'This book is a major new intellectual and cultural history of intolerance and toleration in early modern and early Enlightenment Europe. John Marshall offers an extensive study of late seventeenth-century practices of religious intolerance and toleration in England, Ireland, France, Piedmont and the Netherlands and of the arguments which John Locke and his associates made in defence of 'universal religious toleration'. He analyses early modern and early Enlightenment discussions of toleration; debates over toleration for Jews and Muslims as well as for Christians; the limits of toleration for the intolerant, atheists, 'libertines' and 'sodomites'; and the complex relationships between intolerance and resistance theories including Locke's own Treatises. This study is a significant contribution to the history of the 'republic of letters' of the 1680s and the development of early Enlightenment culture and will be essential reading for scholars of early modern European history, religion, political science, and philosophy.' John Selden: A Life in Scholarship (Two Volumes)by: Toomer, G. J.

John Selden: A Life in Scholarship (Two Volumes)
by: Toomer, G. J.

Hardcover. London, Oxford University Press, reprint, 2011, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Two volume set complete, glossy boards, 977 pages in total. Professor Toomer's two-volume set is not only an indispensable reference work but also provides the first thorough treatment of the scholarship of John Selden, acknowledged as the most learned man of 17th-century England. All of his numerous published works, especially in the fields of history, law, and Hebraica, are critically examined and described in detail. The narrative also relates his writings to contemporary events, in the Civil War and the parliaments (including the Long Parliament) in which he played a prominent part, and to the work of other scholars in Europe (notably Scaliger and Grotius) and in Britain (including Camden and Ussher). Selden's involvement with the Universities, the support of libraries, and the promotion of scholarship is discussed. The work will be an essential resource, not only for the life of a major figure of his time, but also for the intellectual history of 17th-century England in general. No djs as issued, like new.

Libertine London: Sex in the Eighteenth Century Metropolis
by: Julie Peakman

Hardcover. London, Reaktion Books, 1st, 2024, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket with light wear to bottom of spine. 360 pages, color and b&w illustrations, index. Libertine London investigates the sex lives of women from 1680 to 1830, the period known as the long eighteenth century. It uncovers the various experiences of women, whether mistresses, adulteresses or those involved in the sex trade. From renowned courtesans to downtrodden streetwalkers, Julie Peakman examines the multifaceted lives of these women within brothels, on stage and even behind bars. Based on new research into court transcripts, asylum records, magazines, pamphlets, satires, songs, theatre plays and erotica, we learn of the gruesome treatment of women who were sexually active outside of marriage. Julie Peakman looks at sex from women's points of view, undercutting the traditional image of the bawdy eighteenth century to expose a more sordid side, of women left distressed, ostracised and vilified for their sexual behaviour. Unveils the complex sex lives of libertine women in eighteenth-century London.

In the 1930s and 1940s, English fashion houses, spurred by economic and wartime crises, put London on the map as a major fashion city. In this book, Michelle Jones examines the creation of a London-based couture industry during these years, exploring how designer collaboration and the construction of specific networks and narratives supported and shaped the English fashion economy. Haute couture-the practice of creative made-to-measure womenswear-was widely regarded as inherently French. Jones shows how an English version emerged during a period of economic turbulence, when a group of designers banded together in a collective effort to shift power within the international fashion system. London Life: The Magazine of the Swinging Sixtiesby: Simon Wells (Ed.)

London Life: The Magazine of the Swinging Sixties
by: Simon Wells (Ed.)

Hardcover. London, Omnibus Press, 1st, 2020, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, pictorial boards, 176 pages. While many books, films and documentaries claim to have captured the phenomenon that was Swinging London, just one magazine was present in the capital during the 1960s to illustrate this extraordinary moment as it unraveled. London Life emerged in October 1965 and, over the next fifteen months, would document the capital's action at its absolute zenith. With imagery from the likes of David Bailey, Duffy and Terence Donovan, designs from Peter Blake, David Hockney, Gerald Scarfe and fledgling artist Ian Dury plus words and opinions from those riding high on the city`s cutting-edge, London Life remains the coolest document from the capital's most exciting period. Still in publisher's shrinkwrap.

London War Notes 1939-1945by: Mollie Panter Downes

London War Notes 1939-1945
by: Mollie Panter Downes

Hardcover. NY, Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1st, 1971, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 378 pages. From dust jacket notes: "For most Americans, the Second World War started on December 7, 1941, and much of the fighting took place in strange, faraway places. For the British, the war started on September 3, 1939, and much of the action took place in the skies over England. In the spring of 1940, after months of uneasy calm, Germany invaded the Lowlands and conquered France within a few days, leaving England without her only meaningful ally on the Continent. A year would pass before the Soviet Union was drawn into the war, and eighteen months before the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. The United Kingdom, with a land area about the size of Wyoming, was alone, all alone, with only the Straits of Dover separating the island from Hitler's war machine. For six years Mollie Panter-Downes covered the war for The New Yorker magazine from her native England. Even at the height of the air war over London, when 'all that is best in the good life of civilized effort appears to be slowly and painfully keeling over,' she continued to file her fortnightly reports in an understated but dramatic fashion that reflected the fortitude of her fellow countrymen: 'The announcements of the first air-raid deaths are beginning to appear in the obituary columns of the morning papers. No mention is made of the cause of death, but the conventional phrase "very suddenly" is always used.' William Shawn, editor of The New Yorker, has assembled Miss Panter-Downes' 'Letter from London' columns into a consecutive, on-the-spot chronicle of the war in England."

London Yesterday
by: Gerhard Charles Rump (Intro.)

Softcover. Corte Madera CA, Gingko Press, 1st, 1998, Softcover, 96 pages. This book is a collection of rare, previously unpublished, photographs from The International Historical Press Photo Collection of Stockholm that provide fascinating glimpses of everyday life in one of the world's greatest cities during the 1920s and 1930s. These remarkable, large format images open a window to the past that is absolutely stunning. London in the twenties and thirties was still a hub of a powerful empire - an exciting, lively place that brought people and goods together fromall over the world. It is shown here wearing many different faces, but one thing is clear: London has always been full of hustle and bustle. Pulsating street scenes, vibrant architectural portraits, and touching human encounters all come together to create an image of a city that was every bit as exciting then, as it is now.

Lord Lothian and Anglo-American Relations, 1900-1940
by: Priscilla Roberts (Ed.)

Hardcover. Netherlands, Dordrecht/Republic of Letters, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, illustrated glossy boards, 281 pages. For the first four decades of the twentieth century Philip Kerr, the Eleventh Marquess of Lothian, hovered on the fringes of power in Britain. As a commentator on public affairs, private secretary to Liberal prime minister David Lloyd George, secretary to the Rhodes Trust, Liberal peer, and ambassador to the United States at the beginning of World War II, Lothian's greatest interest was in preserving and strengthening the British Empire and building close bonds with the United States. This international collection of essays by seven scholars explores Lothian's impact on Anglo-American relations and his role, behind the scenes and as a government official, in forging what would eventually become known as the "special relationship."
