Postcards from Africa: Photographers of the Colonial Eraby: Christraud M. Geary

Postcards from Africa: Photographers of the Colonial Era
by: Christraud M. Geary

Hardcover. Boston, Museum of Fine Arts, 1st, 2018, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. , 144 pages illustrated in color and b&w. During the global postcard craze that peaked around 1900 and continued for several decades thereafter, photographers in Africa grasped the opportunity to serve a lucrative market for images of the continent, both locally and worldwide. Their picture postcards now contribute to understanding political and cultural changes in Africa at the time, as the rise of the new medium coincided with the expansion and consolidation of colonial rule. They also provide a way to reconstruct the life and work of the photographers of European, African and other backgrounds who created these images-which often survive only in postcard form-and in some cases published them as well. The cards were produced for residents and travelers in Africa, as well as for buyers and collectors who had never set foot on the continent. Their depictions of colonial administrations and the exploitation of resources and peoples, as well as images inscribing tribal identities and racial classifications, often reflect the colonizers' worldview. Yet it is also possible to recover the authorship of some of the African women and men who participated in these photographic encounters. For instance, some cards show that members of Africa's elites recognized the power of photographic images to enhance their standing and present their own narratives.

Postcards of the Night: Views of American Citiesby: Jakle, John A.

Postcards of the Night: Views of American Cities
by: Jakle, John A.

Hardcover. Museum of New Mexico Press, 1st, 2003, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 124 pages. Featuring eighty-two vintage postcards published beginning at the turn of the century, Postcards of the Night traces American cultural life as it was transformed by industrial strength and shifting demographics. The nation increasingly was growing more educated, upwardly mobile, and urban, and the nighttime postcard popularized this modernism for ordinary consumption. Coalitions of city planners and urban developers, politicians and the media utilized the picture postcard to strategize the role of the individual in the rise of the city. It was the birth of leisure and of travel, the new tourist city to which the postcard needed forcefully to speak, in ways that were equal part artifice and art.

The Postcard Age: Selections from the Leonard A. Lauder Collection by: Lynda Klich

The Postcard Age: Selections from the Leonard A. Lauder Collection
by: Lynda Klich

Hardcover. Boston, MFA Publications, 1st, 2012, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. 295 pages in color. In the decades around 1900, a postcard craze swept the world, and billions of cards were bought, mailed and pasted into albums. Many famous artists turned to the new medium, but one of the great pleasures and enigmas of postcards is how some of the most beautiful and interesting examples were made by artists whose names we barely know. Drawing on the riches of the Leonard A. Lauder Postcard Collection (probably the finest and most comprehensive collection of its type), this gorgeous book traces the historical and cultural themes--enthralling, exciting, and sometimes disturbing--of the modern age. The first general publication on the postcard as an artistic medium since the mid-1970s, The Postcard Age is organized thematically, with chapters devoted to urban life, the changing role of women, sports, celebrity, new technologies, the stylish collectors' cards of Art Nouveau and World War I. The result is at once a vivid picture of the concerns and pastimes of the turn of the century and a sampler from the Lauder's vast archives. Still in publisher's shrink wrap.

The Whole Duty of Woman Comprised in the Following Sections...by: A Lady (William Kenrick)

The Whole Duty of Woman Comprised in the Following Sections...
by: A Lady (William Kenrick)

Softcover. Boston, Samuel Hall, reprint, 1794, Book: Fair, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover 12mo, 56 pp. Small, tall 16mo, original marbled paper wrappers. First published in 1695 by Lady Mary Cressy, under the title The Whole Duty of a Woman; or, A Guide to the Female Sex, from the Age of Sixteen to Sixty, &c. For a new edition in 1753, the author was simply listed as "A Lady." In fact, this author was William Kenrick (1725-1779), English novelist, playwright, and founder of the book review digest The London Review. Kenrick was described by Paul Fussell in PMLA (June 1951) as "one of London's most despised, drunken, and morally degenerate hack writers in the later eighteenth century." In this tiny volume, Kenrick assumes the persona of a fallen woman, now reformed, who wants to persuade other women to live a life of virtue. Chapters include Curiosity, Reflection, Vanity, Knowledge, Reputation, Applause, Censure, Insinuation, Affectation, Modesty, Chastity, Complacence, Acquaintance, Friendship, Elegance, Frugality, Employment, Virginity, Marriage, Education, Authority, Widowhood, and Religion. Considerable wear to wrappers, still intact.
