The Great War: July 1, 1916: The First Day of the Battle of the Sommeby: Sacco, Joe

The Great War: July 1, 1916: The First Day of the Battle of the Somme
by: Sacco, Joe

Hardcover. US, W. W. Norton & Company, 1st, 2013-11-04, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Fold-out in slipcase. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. Launched on July 1, 1916, the Battle of the Somme has come to epitomize the madness of the First World War. Almost 20,000 British soldiers were killed and another 40,000 were wounded that first day, and there were more than one million casualties by the time the offensive halted. In The Great War, acclaimed cartoon journalist Joe Sacco depicts the events of that day in an extraordinary, 24-foot- long panorama: from General Douglas Haig and the massive artillery positions behind the trench lines to the legions of soldiers going "over the top" and getting cut down in no-man's-land, to the tens of thousands of wounded soldiers retreating and the dead being buried en masse. Printed on fine accordion-fold paper and packaged in a deluxe slipcase with a 16-page booklet, The Great War is a landmark in Sacco's illustrious career and allows us to see the War to End All Wars as we've never seen it before.

The Journalism of Milena Jesenska: A Critical Voice in Interwar Central Europeby: Kathleen Hayes (Ed.)

The Journalism of Milena Jesenska: A Critical Voice in Interwar Central Europe
by: Kathleen Hayes (Ed.)

Hardcover. NY/Oxford UK, Berghahn Books, 1st, 2003, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 232 pages, pictorial boards. Milena Jesenska, born in Prague in 1896, is most famous as one of Franz Kafka's great loves. Although their relationship lasted only a short time, it won the attention of the literary world with the 1952 publication of Kafka's letters to Milena. Her own letters did not survive. Later biographies showed her as a fascinating personality in her own right. In the Czech Republic, she is remembered as one of the most prominent journalists of the interwar period and as a brave one: in 1939 she was arrested for her work in the resistance after the German occupation of Bohemia and Moravia, and died in Ravensbruck concentration camp in 1944. It is estimated that Jesenska wrote well over 1,000 articles but only a handful have been translated into English. In this book her own writings provide a new perspective on her personality, as well as the changes in Central Europe between the two world wars as these were perceived by a woman of letters. The articles in this volume cover a wide range of topics, including her perceptions of Kafka, her understanding of social and cultural changes during this period, the threat of Nazism, and the plight of the Jews in the 1930s. The Last Whalers: Three Years in the Far Pacific with a Courageous Tribe and a Vanishing Way of Lifeby: Doug Bock Clark

The Last Whalers: Three Years in the Far Pacific with a Courageous Tribe and a Vanishing Way of Life
by: Doug Bock Clark

Hardcover. Boston , Little Brown, 1st, 2019, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 368 pages. On a volcanic island in the Savu Sea so remote that other Indonesians call it "The Land Left Behind" live the Lamalerans: a tribe of 1,500 hunter-gatherers who are the world's last subsistence whalers. They have survived for half a millennium by hunting whales with bamboo harpoons and handmade wooden boats powered by sails of woven palm fronds. But now, under assault from the rapacious forces of the modern era and a global economy, their way of life teeters on the brink of collapse. Award-winning journalist Doug Bock Clark, one of a handful of Westerners who speak the Lamaleran language, lived with the tribe across three years, and he brings their world and their people to vivid life in this gripping story of a vanishing culture. Jon, an orphaned apprentice whaler, toils to earn his harpoon and provide for his ailing grandparents, while Ika, his indomitable younger sister, is eager to forge a life unconstrained by tradition, and to realize a star-crossed love. Frans, an aging shaman, tries to unite the tribe in order to undo a deadly curse. And Ignatius, a legendary harpooner entering retirement, labors to hand down the Ways of the Ancestors to his son, Ben, who would secretly rather become a DJ in the distant tourist mecca of Bali.

The Lost Journalism of Ring Lardnerby: Ring Lardner, Ron Rapoport , et al.

The Lost Journalism of Ring Lardner
by: Ring Lardner, Ron Rapoport , et al.

Hardcover. University of Nebraska Press, 1st, 2017, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 592 pages. Ring Lardner's influence on American letters is arguably greater than that of any other American writer in the early part of the twentieth century. Lauded by critics and the public for his groundbreaking short stories, Lardner was also the country's best-known journalist in the 1920s and early 1930s, when his voice was all but inescapable in American newspapers and magazines. Lardner's trenchant, observant, sly, and cynical writing style, along with a deep understanding of human foibles, made his articles wonderfully readable and his words resonate to this day. Ron Rapoport has gathered the best of Lardner's journalism from his earliest days at the South Bend Times through his years at the Chicago Tribune and his weekly column for the Bell Syndicate, which appeared in 150 newspapers and reached eight million readers. In these columns Lardner not only covered the great sporting events of the era--from Jack Dempsey's fights to the World Series and even an America's Cup--he also wrote about politics, war, and Prohibition, as well as parodies, poems, and penetrating observations on American life.

The Top of His Game: The Best Sportswriting of W. C. Heinzby: Heinz, W. C. (Ed. Bill Littlefield)

The Top of His Game: The Best Sportswriting of W. C. Heinz
by: Heinz, W. C. (Ed. Bill Littlefield)

Hardcover. NY, Library of America, 1st, 2015, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 594 pages. W. C. Heinz (1915-2008) was one of the most distinctive and influential sportswriters of the last century. Though he began his career as a newspaper reporter, Heinz soon moved beyond the confines of the daily column, turning freelance and becoming the first sportwriter to make his living writing for magazines. In doing so he effectively invented the long-form sports story, perfecting a style that paved the way for the New Journalism of the 1960s. His profiles of the top athletes of his day still feel remarkably current, written with a freshness of perception, a gift for characterization, and a finely tuned ear for dialogue. Jimmy Breslin named Heinz's 'Brownsville Bum"a brief life of Al 'Bummy" Davis, Brooklyn street tough and onetime welterweight champion of the world'the greatest magazine sports story I've ever read, bar none." His spare and powerful 1949 column, 'Death of a Race Horse," has been called a literary classic, a work of clarity and precision comparable to Hemingway at his best. Remainder dot to bottom edge otherwise clean.

Written with dash and verve, the diary is also a sharply observed account of New York and London society. In its cinematic pages the drama, comedy and struggle of raising a family and running an 'it' magazine come to life. The Wax Pack: On the Open Road in Search of Baseballs Afterlife
by: Balukjian, Brad

Hardcover. Lincoln NE, University of Nebraska Press, 1st, 2020, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. Is there life after baseball? Starting from this simple question, The Wax Pack ends up with something much bigger and unexpected--a meditation on the loss of innocence and the gift of impermanence, for both Brad Balukjian and the former ballplayers he tracked down. To get a truly random sample of players, Balukjian followed this wildly absurd but fun-as-hell premise: he took a single pack of baseball cards from 1986 (the first year he collected cards), opened it, chewed the nearly thirty-year-old gum inside, gagged, and then embarked on a quest to find all the players in the pack. by: Jules Witcover

Hardcover. NY, Warner Books, 1st, 1997, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. 544 pages. SIGNED BY WITCOVER on the front fly leaf. He was reportedly steps away from where Robert F. Kennedy was shot in 1968. He was also one of the reporters featured in the 1972 book on campaign journalism, The Boys on the Bus, and eventually came to be seen as a "journalistic institution," according to media critic Howard Kurtz. Witcover draws on reminiscences by Al Gore, John Ehrlichman, Allard Lowenstein, and George McGovern, among others, to chronicle the year 1968. Time of Change: Civil Rights Photographs, 1961-1965by: Bruce Davidson , John Lewis, et al.

Time of Change: Civil Rights Photographs, 1961-1965
by: Bruce Davidson , John Lewis, et al.

Hardcover. St. Ann's Press, 1st, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 172 pages. On May 25, 1961, Bruce Davison joined a group of Freedom Riders traveling by bus from Montgomery, Alabama to Jackson, Mississippi. The actions of these youths challenged and disobeyed federal laws allowing for integrated interstate bus travel. These historic episodes, which ended in violence and arrests, marked the beginning of Davidson's exploration into the heart and soul of the civil rights movement in the United States during the years 1961-1965. In 1962, Davidson received a Guggenheim Fellowship and continued documenting the era, including an early Malcolm X rally in Harlem, steel workers in Chicago, a Ku Klux Klan cross burning near Atlanta, farm migrant camps in South Carolina, cotton picking in Mississippi, protest demonstrations in Birmingham, and the heroic Selma March that led to the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which was instrumental in changing the political power base in the segregated Southern states. In the 140 photographs collected here, many of which have never before been published, we see intimate and revealing portraits of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., John Lewis, and other leaders made by Davidson during those turbulent times. These images describe the mood that prevailed during the civil rights movement with a lyrical imagery that is both poignant and profound. As Davidson bears witness to these historical events, and documents the degradation and segregation that were endured, he gives testimony to the struggle for freedom, equality, justice, and human dignity.

Unreasonable Behaviour: An Autobiographyby: McCullin with Lewis Chester, Don

Unreasonable Behaviour: An Autobiography
by: McCullin with Lewis Chester, Don

Hardcover. NY, Knopf, 1st US, 1992, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 287 pages, b&w illustrations. From the construction of the Berlin Wall through every major conflict of his adult lifetime up to the Syrian Civil War, photographer Don McCullin has left a trail of iconic images. Unreasonable Behavior traces the life and career of one of the top photojournalists of the twentieth century and beyond. Born in London in 1935, McCullin worked as a photographer's assistant in the RAF during the Suez Crisis. His early association with a North London gang led to the first publication of his pictures. As an overseas correspondent for the Sunday Times Magazine beginning in 1966, McCullin soon became a new kind of hero, taking a generation of readers beyond the insularity of post-war domestic life through the lens of his Nikon camera. He captured the realities of war in Biafra, the Congo, Vietnam, Cambodia, and the human tragedy of famine and cholera on the Bangladesh border and later, the AIDs epidemic in Sub-Saharan Africa. McCullin now spends his days in a Somerset village, where he photographs the landscape and arranges still-lifes. Harrowing and poignant, Unreasonable Behavior is an extraordinary account of a witness who triumphed over the memories that could have destroyed him.

Victorian News And Newspapersby: Brown, Lucy

Victorian News And Newspapers
by: Brown, Lucy

Hardcover. Oxford UK, Clarendon Press, 1st, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. 394 pages includes index. This is a study of the gathering and presentation of news in late 19th-century England, a time when the vote was given to a large section of the working class, when public interest in the British Empire was on the rise, and when technology enabled newspapers to be produced more cheaply, distributed more quickly, and read more widely than ever before. Using manuscript collections and newspaper archives, the author describes the production and readership of newspapers, and the journalists within the industry--how they were recruited, the organization of their work, the ways in which they acquired their information, and their access to people in positions of power. The book moves on to review changes in news presentation in the last decades of Victorian England until the appearance of such papers as the Daily Mail in the 1890s. Clean copy, like new.

Softcover. NY, Colliers, 1st, 1971, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 224 pages, 266 black and white photographs. Philip Jones Griffiths' classic account of the Vietnamese War was the outcome of three years' reporting and is a detailed survey of the conflict. Wanting You to Want Me: Anonymous Stories From Secret World of Strip Clubsby: Dinslade, Emily/ Parker-Rhodes, Bronwen

Wanting You to Want Me: Anonymous Stories From Secret World of Strip Clubs
by: Dinslade, Emily/ Parker-Rhodes, Bronwen

London, Hardie Grant, 1st, 2022, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, embossed black boards stamped in white, 250 pages, color photos. Wanting You to Want Me is a collection of anonymous stories from the world of London strip clubs, documented by the women themselves. The stories range from behind-the-scenes conversations in the changing rooms, to dancefloor and private room etiquette, from emotional and intellectual connections between dancer and client, to the often-blurred boundaries that exist in between. Journalist Emily Dinsdale and filmmaker Bronwen Parker-Rhodes have collected images and stories from the women working in the London strip clubs over several years. Having been part of the industry themselves, they have a unique and intimate access to the seldom-heard stories, giving voice to an age-old industry, from the perspective of the traditionally voiceless workers. Supported by original, behind the scenes photography from the authors, these narratives express vulnerability, empowerment, curiosity and the complexity and duplicity of relationships--in short, what it is to be human.

War Is Beautiful: The New York Times Pictorial Guide to the Glamour of Armed Conflict*

Hardcover. Brooklyn, NY, PowerHouse Books, 1st, 2015, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 112 pages. Hardcover with dust jacket. Clean, unmarked copy with only minor wear to dust jacket. Color pictures throughout. Bestselling author David Shields analyzed over a decade's worth of front-page war photographs from The New York Times and came to a shocking conclusion: the photo-editing process of the 'paper of record,' by way of pretty, heroic, and lavishly aesthetic image selection, pulls the wool over the eyes of its readers; Shields forces us to face not only the the media's complicity in dubious and catastrophic military campaigns but our own as well.

What a Time It Was!: Leonard Lyons and the Golden Age of New York Nightlife
by: Jeffrey Lyons

Hardcover. NY, Abbeville Press, 1st, 2015, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket, 408 pages, b&w illustrations. This remarkable collection of stories, hand-picked from the archive of legendary New York Post columnist Leonard Lyons by his son, film critic Jeffrey Lyons, will transport readers back to the sparkling peak of New York City nightlife. This was the time when notables of every sort--film producers and stars, writers, politicians, comedians, athletes, and artists--gathered nightly at such famed restaurants and nightclubs as Sardi's, the Stork Club, and the Copacabana. From 1934 to 1974, Leonard Lyons was a fixture at these clubs, befriending celebrities of all stripes and gathering exclusive tidbits for his syndicated newspaper column, The Lyons Den. What a Time It Was! offers candid portraits of stars and statesmen at work and at play--especially at play--but still, effortlessly, larger than life. Illustrated with snapshots and glamour shots, it offers a unique window onto the lives of iconic figures from Ethel Barrymore and Muhammad Ali to Tennessee Williams and Jackie Kennedy, as well as their favorite haunts. Here are four decades of popular culture seen from the front row, by a man who said, "Give me lights and sound and people, and music into the night. Late into the night!"
