Lessons on the Analytic of the Sublimeby: Jean-Francois Lyotard

Lessons on the Analytic of the Sublime
by: Jean-Francois Lyotard

Softcover. Stanford CA, Stanford University Press, 1st transl., 1944, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 246 pages. Philosophical aesthetics has seen an amazing revival over the past decade, as a radical questioning of the very grounds of Western epistemology has revealed that some antinomies of aesthetic experience-and in particular of the limits of the aesthetical-can be viewed as a general, yet necessarily open model for human understanding. In this revival, no text in the classical corpus of Western philosophy has been more frequently discussed than the complex paragraphs modestly inserted into Kant's Critique of Judgment as sections 23-29: the Analytic of the Sublime. This book is a rigorous explication de texte, a close reading of these sections. First, Lyotard reconstitutes, following the letter of Kant's analysis, the philosophical context of his critical writings and of the European Enlightenment. Second, because the analytic of the sublime reveals the inability of aesthetic experience to bridge the separate realms of theoretical and practical reason, Lyotard can connect his reconstitution of Kant's critical project with today's debates about the very conditions-and limits-of presentation in general.

Letters from Prison by: Marquis De Sade (Author), Richard Seaver (Translator)

Letters from Prison
by: Marquis De Sade (Author), Richard Seaver (Translator)

Hardcover. NY, Arcade Publishing, 1st, 1999, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. 401pages. The 1990s saw a resurgence of interest in the Marquis de Sade, with several biographies competing to put their version of his life story before the public. But Sadean scholar Richard Seaver takes us directly to the source, translating Sade's prison correspondence. Seaver's translations retain the aristocratic hauteur of Sade's prose, which still possesses a clarity that any reader can appreciate. "When will my horrible situation cease?" he wrote to his wife shortly after his incarceration began in 1777. "When in God's name will I be let out of the tomb where I have been buried alive? There is nothing to equal the horror of my fate!" But he was never reduced to pleading for long, and not always so solicitous of his wife's feelings; a few years later, he would write, "This morning I received a fat letter from you that seemed endless. Please, I beg of you, don't go on at such length: do you believe that I have nothing better to do than to read your endless repetitions?" For those interested in learning about the man responsible for some of the most infamous philosophical fiction in history, Letters from Prison is an indispensable collection. Clean copy.

Letters of John Cowper Powys to His Brother Llewelyn Volume 1: 1902-1925 by: John Cowper Powys

Letters of John Cowper Powys to His Brother Llewelyn Volume 1: 1902-1925
by: John Cowper Powys

Softcover. London, Village Press, 1st, 1975, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 367 pages. Volume 1 only. Selected and edited by Malcolm Elwin. With his younger brother Llewelyn, to whom he had been an impressive protective figure since childhood, he spoke almost without reserve, although the tow brothers were fundamentally so different, one from the other, as brothers can be. John's imaginative ability to put himself in another's place, together with his acute awareness of human suffering, made it impossible for him to wound. Llewelyn's vivid, spontaneous and sensual response to life was sometimes not so sensitive to the feelings of others.Had their understanding not been so deeply rooted he might have wounded John by his outspoken criticism of his brother's undisciplined and torrential writing power. But in literary criticism he did not surpass John, who could and did point out flaws in Llewelyn's own work. The Mutual criticism was only one aspect of the constant exchange, when they were apart, of their thoughts and feelings in an unending flow of letters. Spine faded, a clean copy.

Lewis Carroll in Numberland: His Fantastical Mathematical Logical Life by: Wilson, Robin

Lewis Carroll in Numberland: His Fantastical Mathematical Logical Life
by: Wilson, Robin

Hardcover. London, Allen Lane, 2008, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. The writings of Lewis Carroll have inspired and entertained generations of readers and have influenced the work of everyone from James Joyce to John Lennon. But the extraordinary imagination that created Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel, Through the Looking Glass, was not limited simply to fantasy, logic and word play. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, who wrote under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll, was for many years lecturer in mathematics at Christ Church, Oxford, and published works in the fields of geometry, logic and algebra. He also made significant contributions to subjects as varied as voting patterns and the design of tennis tournaments, and he created large numbers of imaginative recreational puzzles based on mathematical ideas. For the first time, Lewis Carroll in Numberland explores both his serious and his recreational work and places it in the context of his many other activities, mathematical and otherwise. Clean copy.

Lily: Reminiscences of Lillian Hellman
by: Peter Feibleman

NY, William Morrow, 1988, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, price-clipped dust jacket. 364 pages, b&w photos. Novelist Peter Feibleman first met world-famous playwright Lillian Hellman when he was ten and she was thirty-five-years old, and out of that first encounter there grew romantic friendship that was to blossom into a love affair--one that ended only with her death. Drawing on many of her letters, private journals, and conversations recorded by them both specifically for this memoir, and on her later published and unpublished works, as well as on his own diaries, Feibleman brings to life one of the most glittering, fascinating, and complex women of our time. LILLY is replete with anecdotes about Miss Hellman's celebrated friends, including Dashiell Hammett, with whom she shared her life for many years; Dorothy Parker; Elizabeth Taylor, who made a triumphant stage appearance in 'The Little Foxes'; Mike Nichols; Elaine May; Leonard Bernstein; and her Martha's Vineyard neighbors--Jules Feiffer, Barbara and John Hersey, Ann and Art Buchwald, Rose and William Styron, and many, many others. Her animosities are depicted as well, including her lengthy and virulent feud with Mary McCarthy. What emerges is an intensely personal portrait, unique and fully realized, of an immensely talented writer, her ways of loving, and her world.

Living in Bloomsbury by: Burke, Thomas

Living in Bloomsbury
by: Burke, Thomas

Hardcover. London, George Allen & Unwin Ltd., 2nd pr., 1947, Book: Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover in light tan cloth with red lettering to the spine, 361 pages. Although the life of London runs like a thread through the whole fabric of this book, it is not essentially a book about London. Life in Bloomsbury is but the center of a large circle, the point around which the rest of the book revolves, the origin of a disarming commentary on an infinite variety of topics - on Bloomsbury's squares, on the picturesqueness of London a generation ago, on what is true Cockney, on the differences of English and American humor, on the decay of English wit, on books and authors and publishers and the Press, on the literary lions of the past, on the religion of speed, on the charm of Americans, on how the Victorian age was neither so repressed nor so hidebound as most people today like to believe - and so on, one thing leading to another, like good conversation at a good luncheon overlooking the mellow squares of Bloomsbury. The book is full, too, of good stories and reminiscences, both humorous and pathetic, but there is shrewd comment besides on the deficiencies of contemporary society, not the less effective because the author knows how to soften the blow. Mild soil, sunning to covers, clean copy.

London War Notes 1939-1945by: Mollie Panter Downes

London War Notes 1939-1945
by: Mollie Panter Downes

Hardcover. NY, Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1st, 1971, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 378 pages. From dust jacket notes: "For most Americans, the Second World War started on December 7, 1941, and much of the fighting took place in strange, faraway places. For the British, the war started on September 3, 1939, and much of the action took place in the skies over England. In the spring of 1940, after months of uneasy calm, Germany invaded the Lowlands and conquered France within a few days, leaving England without her only meaningful ally on the Continent. A year would pass before the Soviet Union was drawn into the war, and eighteen months before the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. The United Kingdom, with a land area about the size of Wyoming, was alone, all alone, with only the Straits of Dover separating the island from Hitler's war machine. For six years Mollie Panter-Downes covered the war for The New Yorker magazine from her native England. Even at the height of the air war over London, when 'all that is best in the good life of civilized effort appears to be slowly and painfully keeling over,' she continued to file her fortnightly reports in an understated but dramatic fashion that reflected the fortitude of her fellow countrymen: 'The announcements of the first air-raid deaths are beginning to appear in the obituary columns of the morning papers. No mention is made of the cause of death, but the conventional phrase "very suddenly" is always used.' William Shawn, editor of The New Yorker, has assembled Miss Panter-Downes' 'Letter from London' columns into a consecutive, on-the-spot chronicle of the war in England."

Lorraine Hansberry: The Life Behind A Raisin in the Sun
by: Charles J. Shields

Hardcover. NY, Henry Holt, 1st, 2022, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, unclipped. The moving story of the life of the woman behind A Raisin in the Sun, the most widely anthologized, read, and performed play of the American stage. Written when she was just twenty-eight, Lorraine Hansberry's landmark A Raisin in the Sun is listed by the National Theatre as one of the hundred most significant works of the twentieth century. Hansberry was the first Black woman to have a play performed on Broadway, and the first Black and youngest American playwright to win a New York Critics' Circle Award. Charles J. Shields's authoritative biography of one of the twentieth century's most admired playwrights examines the parts of Lorraine Hansberry's life that have escaped public knowledge: the influence of her upper-class background, her fight for peace and nuclear disarmament, the reason why she embraced Communism during the Cold War, and her dependence on her white husband-her best friend, critic, and promoter. Many of the identity issues about class, sexuality, and race that she struggled with are relevant and urgent today. This dramatic telling of a passionate life-a very American life through self-reinvention-uses previously unpublished interviews with close friends in politics and theater, privately held correspondence, and deep research to reconcile old mysteries and raise new questions about a life not fully described until now.

Lost in the Customhouse: Authorship in the American Renaissance (INSCRIBED COPY)
by: Loving, Jerome

Hardcover. Iowa City, University Of Iowa Press, 1st, 1993, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR on the half-title page. 268 pages. In this vigorous challenge to dominant literary criticism, Jerome Loving extends the traditional period of American literary rebirth to the end of the 19th century and argues for the intrinsic value of literature in the face of new historicist and deconstructionist readings. Louis MacNeice by: Stallworthy, Jon

Louis MacNeice
by: Stallworthy, Jon

Hardcover. NY, W W Norton & Co , 1st, 1995, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. In this compelling new study of one of the century's most memorable poets, Jon Stallworthy has produced an outstanding full-scale biography of Louis MacNeice, drawing on the testimony of family, friends, lovers, and MacNeice's extensive unpublished correspondence and papers. Stallworthy, whose Wilfred Owen was described by Graham Greene as "one of the finest biographies of our time," has produced another no less remarkable life of an equally haunting figure. MacNeice's mother died when he was seven and Stallworthy shows how his imagination transmuted her ghostly presence, and the powerful presence of his father, into an elemental opposition structuring most of what he would write - from anguished indictments of his native Ireland to poignant love poems.

Love Unknown: The Life and Worlds of Elizabeth Bishop by: Travisano, Thomas

Love Unknown: The Life and Worlds of Elizabeth Bishop
by: Travisano, Thomas

Hardcover. NY, Viking, 1st, 2019, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket, 422 pages. Poets of the twentieth century Elizabeth Bishop's friend James Merrill once observed that 'Elizabeth had more talent for life--and for poetry--than anyone else I've known.' This new biography reveals just how she learned to marry her talent for life with her talent for writing in order to create a brilliant array of poems, prose, and letters--a remarkable body of work that would make her one of America's most beloved and celebrated poets. In Love Unknown, Thomas Travisano tells the story of the famous poet and traveler's life. Bishop moved through extraordinary mid-twentieth century worlds with relationships among an extensive international array of literati, visual artists, musicians, scholars, and politicians -- along with a cosmopolitan gay underground that was then nearly invisible to the dominant culture. Drawing on fresh interviews and newly discovered manuscript materials, Travisano illuminates that the 'art of losing' that Bishop celebrated with such poignant irony in her poem 'One Art' --perhaps her most famous-- was linked in equal part to an 'art of finding,' Like new.

Love, Kurt: The Vonnegut Love Letters, 1941-1945by: Kurt Vonnegut / Edith Vonnegut

Love, Kurt: The Vonnegut Love Letters, 1941-1945
by: Kurt Vonnegut / Edith Vonnegut

Hardcover. NY, Random House;, 1st, 2020, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 220 pages. Kurt Vonnegut's eldest daughter, Edith, was cleaning out her mother's attic when she stumbled upon a dusty, aged box. Inside, she discovered an unexpected treasure: more than two hundred love letters written by Kurt to Jane, spanning the early years of their relationship. The letters begin in 1941, after the former schoolmates reunited at age nineteen, sparked a passionate summer romance, and promised to keep in touch when they headed off to their respective colleges. And they did, through Jane's conscientious studying and Kurt's struggle to pass chemistry. The letters continue after Kurt dropped out and enlisted in the army in 1943, while Jane in turn graduated and worked for the Office of Strategic Services in Washington, D.C. They also detail Kurt's deployment to Europe in 1944, where he was taken prisoner of war and declared missing in action, and his eventual safe return home and the couple's marriage in 1945.
