Dance Floor Democracy: The Social Geography of Memory at the Hollywood Canteen by: Tucker, Sherrie

Dance Floor Democracy: The Social Geography of Memory at the Hollywood Canteen
by: Tucker, Sherrie

Softcover. Durham NC, Duke University Press, 1st, 2014, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 416 pages. Open from 1942 until 1945, the Hollywood Canteen was the most famous of the patriotic home front nightclubs where civilian hostesses jitterbugged with enlisted men of the Allied Nations. Since the opening night, when the crowds were so thick that Bette Davis had to enter through the bathroom window to give her welcome speech, the storied dance floor where movie stars danced with soldiers has been the subject of much U.S. nostalgia about the 'Greatest Generation.' Drawing from oral histories with civilian volunteers and military guests who danced at the wartime nightclub, Sherrie Tucker explores how jitterbugging swing culture has come to represent the war in U.S. national memory. Yet her interviewees' varied experiences and recollections belie the possibility of any singular historical narrative. Some recall racism, sexism, and inequality on the nightclub's dance floor and in Los Angeles neighborhoods, dynamics at odds with the U.S. democratic, egalitarian ideals associated with the Hollywood Canteen and the 'Good War' in popular culture narratives. Clean copy in publisher's shrinkwrap.

Death in Life: Survivors of Hiroshima
by: Lifton, Robert Jay

Hardcover. NY, Random House, 2nd pr., 1967, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a lightly worn dust jacket, 594 pages. In Japan, "hibakusha" means "the people affected by the explosion"--specifically, the explosion of the atomic bomb in Hiroshima in 1945. In this classic study, winner of the 1969 National Book Award in Science, Lifton studies the psychological effects of the bomb on 90,000 survivors. He sees this analysis as providing a last chance to understand--and be motivated to avoid--nuclear war. This compassionate treatment is a significant contribution to the atomic age. Desperate Inscriptions: Graffiti from the Nazi Prison in Rome 1943-1944by: Pugliese, Stanislao G.

Desperate Inscriptions: Graffiti from the Nazi Prison in Rome 1943-1944
by: Pugliese, Stanislao G.

Softcover. Boca Raton FL, Bordighera Press , 1st, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, b&w illustrations. Tucked away on Via Tasso in a middle-class district in the Eternal City--a stone's throw from the Basilica of St. John in Lateran--the former prison is now the Museo Storico della Liberazione di Roma, commemorating the liberation of Rome by Resistance fighters and Allied troops in June 1944. Within, anti-fascist partisans scrawled graffiti full of pathos and the romantic idealism that so permeated the Italian Resistance. A visitor today can still read the desperate inscriptions, collected in this volume along with recollections by inmates and narratives concerning the Via Tasso. Pugliese's thoughtful narrative, accompanied by black-and-white photos by Lianna Miuccio, documents the lives of such antifascist prisoners as Arrigo Paladini, who wrote on the wall as he was dying, "There is nothing that can give the joy of a beautiful death as the consciousness of having served the country until the last breath of life." This book examines the inscriptions on the walls, translates them, shows Miuccio's stark photos of them, and gives a historical context, timeline, and survivor and family interviews. Clean copy. Domus, Volume 2, 1940-1949
by: Giorgi, Manolo De/ Luigi Spinelli / Charlotte Fiell/Peter Fiell

Hardcover. Taschen, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 580 pages. 1940-1949: Destruction and Reconstruction. This volume covers the 1940s, when fascism came to a climax and World War II led to the extensive destruction of Europe. But the second half of this decade was also a time of reconstruction, democratization, and the related search for new social values. Unlike in Nazi Germany, in fascist Italy Modernism was able to advance in architecture and design - as proved impressively by the buildings and designs by Carlo Mollino, Gian Luigi Banfi, Franco Albini, and Giuseppe Terragni that are documented herein. After the war, Organic Design emerged alongside the International style. This edition reflects upon the economic, social, and cultural problems of the time, but also shows how the force of the avant-garde continued to thrive in Italy, Switzerland, Scandinavia and the USA. Reports and features on modern industrial design and furniture, as well as domestic and business interiors stand side by side with articles about novel prefabricated houses. In publisher's shrink wrap. Due to size and weight, DOMESTIC SHIPPING ONLY.

by: Harris, Neil and Teri J. Edelstein

Hardcover. Chicago, University of Chicago Library, 1st, 2014, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 144 pages. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. With 2014 marking the one-hundredth anniversary of the commencement of World War I, En Guerre offers a fresh, thought-provoking exploration of the impact of the Great War as viewed through the lens of French graphic illustration of the period. Published in conjunction with an exhibition of these illustrations at the University of Chicago Library's Special Collections Research Center, this catalog draws from illustrated books, magazines, and prints to present a wide range of perspectives on themes essential to a deeper understanding of the war in France: patriotism, nationalism, propaganda, and the soldier's experience, as well as the mobilization of the French national home front as seen through fashion, music, humor, and children's literature. With a text by noted historians Neil Harris and Teri J. Edelstein and featuring more than one hundred reproductions of the vivid and colorful work of French illustrators, En Guerre reaffirms the persuasive role that art can play in the service of political and military power.

Eva and Otto: Resistance, Refugees, and Love in the Time of Hitlerby: Pfister, Tom; Pfister, Kathy; Pfister, Peter

Eva and Otto: Resistance, Refugees, and Love in the Time of Hitler
by: Pfister, Tom; Pfister, Kathy; Pfister, Peter

Softcover. West Lafayette IN, Purdue University Press , 1st, 2020, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 529 pages, b&w illustrations. Eva and Otto is a true story about German opposition and resistance to Hitler as revealed through the early lives of Eva Lewinski Pfister (1910-1991) and Otto Pfister (1900-1985). It is an intimate and epic account of two Germans-Eva born Jewish, Otto born Catholic-who worked with a little-known German political group that resisted and fought against Hitler in Germany before 1933 and then in exile in Paris before the German invasion of France in May 1940. After their improbable escapes from separate internment and imprisonment in Europe, Eva obtained refuge in America in October 1940 where she worked to rescue other endangered political refugees, including Otto, with the help of Eleanor Roosevelt. As revealed in recently declassified records, Eva and Otto later engaged in different secret assignments with the US Office of Strategic Services (OSS) in support of the Allied war effort. Despite their vastly different backgrounds, Eva and Otto gave each other hope and strength as they acted upon what they understood to be an ethical duty to help others threatened by fascism. The book provides a sobering insight into the personal risks and costs of a commitment to that duty. Their unusually beautiful writing-directed to each other in diaries and correspondence during two long periods of wartime separation-also reveals an unlikely and inspiring love story.
