Perfect Intimacyby: Lili Almog

Perfect Intimacy
by: Lili Almog

Hardcover. NY, powerHouse Books, 1st, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 127 pages. Lili Almog's color photos taken at three Carmelite monasteries (of nuns) are revealing of their faith.. The sisters showing their distinctive profession crucifixes (normally worn hidden under their scapulars, and pinned to their beds when they go to sleep) are revealing their personal symbols of "perfect intimacy." And the statues and/or holy cards of our holy mother St. Teresa, our holy father St. John of the Cross, St. Therese, and St. Joseph make Carmelites feel right at home. The monasteries are also significant: they are on Mt. Carmel (Haifa) and in Bethlehem--founded by Sister Miriam, "the little Arab"; and in Port Tobacco, Maryland, whose community is the oldest and first Discalced Carmelite convent founded in the US. The spartan surroundings emphasize the importance of the nuns' relationship with God. The photos of the sisters revealing their profession crucifixes, which they wear near their hearts and pin to their beds when going to sleep, I found especially moving. Almog's photos are neither stilted nor rigid, but reminiscent of the photos that St. Therese's sister Celine took of her! The quotations from Blessed Teresa of the Andes are very apt comments on the photos.

Pin-Ups: Night and Dayby: Elvgren, Gil (Illustrator)

Pin-Ups: Night and Day
by: Elvgren, Gil (Illustrator)

Hardcover. Canada, Flammarion, 1st, 2015, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 160 pages. This book will beguile a new generation with flirtatious representations of femininity from the 1940s and 50s. Illustrations of irresistible pinup models bring teasing frivolity to a range of everyday situations, organized thematically from morning to evening. Gil Elvgren, Earl Moran, Al Buell, Edward d'Ancona, and Earl Christie were master illustrators of the pin-up genre. From sun-kissed beauties at the beach to ski bunnies hitting the slopes, bedside nurses ready to take your temperature to scantily clad runaways, rakish shipmates to not-so-conscientious secretaries, these smiling cuties are ready for fun. The penny arcade trading cards originally viewed on a peep-show style reel and reproduced here as detachable illustrations feature both established pin-up artists and those waiting to be rediscovered. Each illustration is accompanied by a humorous and memorable celebrity quote.

Pollen's Women: The Art of Samson Pollen
by: Deis, Robert, Doyle, Wyatt

Hardcover. New Texture, 1st, 2018, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, pictorial boards, 135 pages. A lush visual archive collecting some of artist Samson Pollen's most memorable pieces, selected from the hundreds of jaw-dropping illustrations Pollen provided for men's adventure magazines (MAMs) from the 1950s through the 1970s. Sexy women were a regular component of story illustrations published in the more than 160 MAM titles that flourished from the early 1950s through the mid-1970s, and nobody painted beautiful and dangerous femmes like Pollen. Much of the artist's work--literally, hundreds of pieces--saw print in the Atlas/Diamond group of MAMs from Marvel Comics founder Martin Goodman's Magazine Management Company. Until now, almost none of these illustrations have seen print since their original publication in those latter-day pulps. POLLEN'S WOMEN collects the artist's sexiest and most lethal female portraits in a deluxe hardcover edition, with an autobiographical introduction by the artist.

Premiere Nudes
by: Allen, Albert Arthur / Kaplan, Daile

Hardcover. Twin Palms, 1st, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, unpaginated, black cloth in pictorial dust jacket (with pink belly band dj present and intact). Lavishly illustrated in duotone photographs of female nudes. During the 1920s. a time when the United States was, from all appearances, open to artistic experimentation, a Bay Area photographer named Albert Arthur Allen unwittingly took on the Goliath of nudity and politics. An obscure figure who operated outside the margins of the fine art community, Allen was known to a small coterie of clients who bought boudoir studies, pictures of comely young voluptuaries. (In Europe these photographic etudes were an acknowledged integral part of the academic tradition.) A homespun aesthetician who had a marked propensity for self-invention, Allen produced photographic protfolios that were initially inspired by the naturist movement. Today his images, which are typically perceived as high camp, are more familiar than his name.

Hardcover. NY, powerHouse Books, 1st, 1996, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 256 pages. Sylvia Plachy, a photographer for the Village Voice, and James Ridgeway, a reporter for the same publication, have delved into the depths of the pornography trade to explore and explain both its allure and its vulgarity. There is a sense of shock value in exposing the most lurid of fantasies--a man who has his dominatrix mummify him in concrete--that is tempered with theories as to how such an industry could have evolved. We also get to meet for ourselves those in the trade, providing a walk on the wild side within the safe confines of photographs and words.

Sarah Angelina Acland: First Lady of Colour Photography
by: Hudson, Giles

Hardcover. UK, Bodleian Library, University of Oxford, 1st, 2012, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 304 pages. Hardcover with dust jacket. Clean, unmarked copy with only minor wear to dust jacket. Pictures throughout. Sarah Angelina Acland (1849-1930) is one of the most important photographers of the late Victorian and early Edwardian periods. Born to a preeminent English family, Acland first gained note as a portraitist whose illustrious subjects--among them two prime ministers, the physicist Lord Kelvin, and the noted art critic John Ruskin--were visitors to her family's Oxford home. Yet it was through her work in the thenfledgling field of color photography that Acland achieved her greatest acclaim. When her color photographs were shown at the Royal Photographic Society in 1905, many considered them to be among the finest work produced in the new medium. An introduction to Acland's entire body of work, this volume contains more than two hundred previously unpublished examples of her photographs, spanning portraiture, studies of Oxford architecture, and landscape and garden photographs captured in Madeira, Portugal. Additional images include four unrecorded portraits by Lewis Carroll of Acland and her brothers--shed light on the work of her contemporaries, including acquaintances and artistic influences like Carroll and Julia Margaret Cameron. A fascinating look at the earliest days of color photography, this book also offers a glimpse into the lives of an influential English family and its circle of friends.

Shadow Mothers: Nannies, Au Pairs, and the Micropolitics of Mothering (INSCRIBED COPY)by: Macdonald, Cameron Lynne

Shadow Mothers: Nannies, Au Pairs, and the Micropolitics of Mothering (INSCRIBED COPY)
by: Macdonald, Cameron Lynne

Softcover. Berkeley, University of California Press, 1st, 2011, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 272 pages. INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR on front fly leaf. Shadow Mothers shines new light on an aspect of contemporary motherhood often hidden from view: the need for paid childcare by women returning to the workforce, and the complex bonds mothers forge with the "shadow mothers" they hire. Cameron Lynne Macdonald illuminates both sides of an unequal and complicated relationship. Based on in-depth interviews with professional women and childcare providers- immigrant and American-born nannies as well as European au pairs-Shadow Mothers locates the roots of individual skirmishes between mothers and their childcare providers in broader cultural and social tensions. Macdonald argues that these conflicts arise from unrealistic ideals about mothering and inflexible career paths and work schedules, as well as from the devaluation of paid care work. Mild crease to cover, otherwise a clean, bright copy.

Sisters in the Wilderness: The Challenge of Womanist God-Talk (SIGNED COPY)by: Delores S. Williams

Sisters in the Wilderness: The Challenge of Womanist God-Talk (SIGNED COPY)
by: Delores S. Williams

Hardcover. Maryknoll NY, Orbis Books, 2nd pr., 1994, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 287 pages. INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR on the front fly leaf. Drawing on the biblical figure of Hagarmother of Ishmael, cast into the desert by Abraham and Sarah, but protected by God, Delores Williams finds a prototype for the struggle of African-American women. Through Hagars story of poverty and slavery, ethnicity and sexual exploitation, exile and encounter with God, she traces parallels in the history of African-American women from slavery to the present day. What emerges from this shared interplay of race, sex, and class, is a new womanist theology that promotes survival and wholeness as well as liberation. Clean copy.

Introduction by Hubert de Givenchy. Skrebneski is celebrated as one of the world's finest fashion and portrait photographers. Stephane Coutelle: Shoebox Studioby: Saint-Jacques, Camille (Introduction)

Stephane Coutelle: Shoebox Studio
by: Saint-Jacques, Camille (Introduction)

Hardcover. Bologna, Italy, Damiani, 1st, 2012, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover. Includes decorative slip case. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. Shoebox Studio records a moment in a fashion model's career that is rarely seen by a wider public: the model's first "getting-acquainted" photoshoot, in which no attempt is made to beautify or exaggerate her face, pose or expression. Having produced photo campaigns for some of the world's premier beauty clients (Lancome, L'Oreal, Revlon), French photographer and painter Stephane Coutelle is ideally placed to make these portraits of vulnerability and aspiration: his Shoebox Studio sees an unending parade of young women, newly arrived from all over the world and pursuing their first career. His first meeting with a model aims to establish their character and psychology, before professional reflexes take hold, and before complicity is established between photographer and model. Shoebox Studio gathers portraits of aspiring models taken between 2006 and 2010.
