by: Mizuno, Mineo

Hardcover. Long Beach CA, Long Beach Museum of Art, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 95 pages, illustrated with 45 color plates. Like new in publisher's shrinkwrap. Since 1970, Mizuno's work has evolved from functional dinnerware to abstract sculptural forms, from playful and humorous trompe l'oeil plates to richly layered sculpture informed by his evocative personal history, paralleling the development of the ceramics field itself in the late 20th century as it evolved from functional forms to a medium of full artistic expression. The exhibition is the first major museum exhibition to survey the work of this artist whose superbly crafted works, while firmly grounded in the traditions of the ceramic arts, extend to new forms in clay that defy traditional categories. This exhibition catalogue designed by Takaaki Matsumoto includes a forward, interview with the artist, a biography and exhibition history, and the exhibition checklist of 48 artworks. The exhibition and publication trace the work of this Japanese-born, Los Angeles-based ceramist from 1971 through 2003. David Stromeyer: Equilibrium: Career Retrospective (SIGNED COPY)
by: David Stromeyer

Softcover. Burlington VT, BCA Center, 1st, 2012, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 80 page exhibition catalog illustrated in color. SIGNED BY ARTIST on the title page. Text includes the artist's remarks and essays by Courtney Lynch and Jasminr Parsia. Related postcard and brochure laid in. For more than five decades, Stromeyer has created sculptures whose graphic forms, saturated colors, and complex, balanced compositions seem to defy steel's material limits. Despite the weight of their materials and construction--including welded, cold-bent, half-ton steel plates--many of Stromeyer's sculptures play with space and perception; they seem to defy gravity, appearing to float and extend upwards effortlessly in the landscape. Very Good plus.

Elmgreen & Dragset: This Is the First Day of My Life
by: Massimiliano Gioni (Author), Elmgreen & Dragset (Artist), Michael Elmgreen (Artist), Ingar Dragset (Artist)

Hardcover. Hatje Cantz, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 320 pages. "Some people find a certain cruelty in parts of our work," say the rising conceptualist-collaborators Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset, "but they are definitely not more vicious than any real life experiences." Since 1995, Elmgreen and Dragset have tackled issues of privatization, gentrification, social alienation and the dismantling of social welfare. For their first show at Tanya Bonakdar Gallery in 2001 they papered over the windows with the announcement "Opening Soon Prada." Pursuing and inverting this theme, in 2005 they installed a mocked-up Prada store on a deserted road near Marfa, Texas. They have recreated hospitals and prison cells, and have reconfigured gallery spaces to spatially deter their would-be audience. "Our aim is to investigate some of the power structures that these spaces derive from, and by exchanging and replacing some of these structures, show how fragile they actually are." This monograph is the first extensive survey of their work to date.

Embodiments: Masterworks of African Figurative Sculpture
by: Christina Hellmich , Manuel Jordan, et al.

Hardcover. NY, Prestel, 1st, 2014, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, still in publisher'd shrinkwrap. This volume, on a unique and wide-ranging collection of figural sculptures from sub-Saharan Africa, examines not only each distinctive piece, but also how these works of art express value systems and cultural relationships both inside and outside Africa. The Richard H. Scheller Collection, presented in this book and on display at the de Young in San Francisco, offers a diverse portrait of sub-Saharan African sculpture. More than 100 distinct ethnic groups from more than 20 present-day countries are represented by works of art spanning several centuries and encompassing a broad array of styles. These objects represent ancestors, express community values, and serve religious and ceremonial purposes. Beautifully photographed in natural light, the sculptures range in style from classic and iconic to rare and unusual. The geographical breadth of the collection and the variations in the depictions will allow readers to explore both the histories and formal qualities of the genre. Texts by leading scholars enhance the understanding of 122 objects, alongside essays on major sculptures and themes. Writings on the scientific testing of pieces and the process of photographing the works round out this volume that expands our understanding of African figurative art.

Eric Fischl: Ten Breaths
by: Kay Heimer, Roland Meyer , et al.

Hardcover. Kerber, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Hardcover, 144 pages. Painter Francesco Clemente once said of Eric Fischl, "If life is what happens to you as you make other plans, then 'life' is Eric Fischl's subject matter." Though Fischl is best known for his figurative paintings, this monograph presents a 2007 series of 13 sculptures and corresponding large-format gouache works. Cast in polyester and resin, the life-sized, three-dimensional nudes enter into tense dialogue with the drawings, depicting the same element of human struggle that we find in Fischl's paintings. Naked bodies without context or reference, engaged in no specific narrative, offer any number of possible interpretations. They allow the viewer to indulge in careful observation, daring us to penetrate the surface patina of the sculptures to see if anything lies beneath. A special section includes a complete catalogue raisonee of the sculptural work from 1975 through 2007.

Essential Robert Indiana, Theby: Krause, Martin

Essential Robert Indiana, The
by: Krause, Martin

Hardcover. Indianapolis, Indiana, Indianapolis Museum of Art, 1st, 2013, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, 160 pages. Hardcover no dust jacket. Color pictures throughout. Clean, unmarked copy with only minor wear to boards. Decoding Robert Indiana's work for a new generation, this revelatory book explores previously unknown autobiographical elements in the work of the Pop artist and printmaker. Famously proclaiming himself to be "an American painter of signs," Robert Indiana has created an enormous body of work, much of it boldly colored abstractions. In this incisive new examination of the artist, based on ongoing conversations with Indiana, art historian Martin Krause sifts through autobiographical clues within the artist's work and finds a wealth of affecting and affectionate references to Indiana's childhood, literary heroes, and the cultural icons of his generation. In addition, a penetrating essay by Pop art scholar John Wilmerding deconstructs Indiana's use of geometric shapes, making unexpected connections that enhance Krause's thesis. Accompanied by reproductions of more than 50 prints from the period 1960-2010--and focusing specifically on series such as Decade: Autoportraits, Vinalhaven Suite, and The Hartley Elegies as well as the "Love" and "Hope" images and studies of Marilyn Monroe, Picasso, and the Brooklyn Bridge--Krause's decryption of Indiana's visual language provides telling insight into the work of this quintessentially American artist.

The book includes essays by five noted authorities: Linda Norden discusses Hesse's early career in New York following her years as a student of Josef Albers; Maria Kreutzer writes on Hesse's work in Germany in the mid-sixties, when she moved from two to three dimensions; Robert Storr places Hesse in relation to the central American artistic concerns of the 1960s, focusing on her links to such artists as Jasper Johns, Sol LeWitt, and Claes Oldenburg; Anna Chave analyzes Hesse's mature work in light of contemporary feminist theory on authorship and subjectivity; and Maurice Berger examines Hesse's radical and personal approach to the sculptural object following her rejection of painting. In addition, Helen Cooper draws on the artist's extensive diaries, notebooks, and correspondence for a chronology detailed as much as possible in Hesse's own words.

by: Elisabeth Sussman and Fred Wasserman

Hardcover. NY, Jewish Museum / Yale University Press, 1st, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 192 pages. Eva Hesse: Sculpture focuses on the artist's large-scale sculptures in latex and fiberglass and provides a rare opportunity to look at Hesse's artistic achievement within the historical context of her life in never-before-seen family diaries and photographs. Essays consider Hesse's art from a variety of angles: Elisabeth Sussman discusses the sculptures shown in the 1968 solo exhibition; Fred Wasserman delves into the Hesse family's life in Nazi Germany and in the German Jewish community in New York in the 1940s; Yve-Alain Bois examines Hesse's works within the context of the art and aesthetic theories of the 1960s; and Mark Godfrey analyzes the importance of Hesse's celebrated hanging sculptures of 1969-70. In addition to color reproductions of the artist's sculpture, the book features a copiously illustrated chronology of the artist's life.
