Japan's Technological Challenge to the West, 1950-1974:Motivation and Accomplishment by: Ozawa, Terutomo

Japan's Technological Challenge to the West, 1950-1974:Motivation and Accomplishment
by: Ozawa, Terutomo

Hardcover. Cambridge MA, MIT Press, 1st, 1974, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a price-clipped dust jacket, 162 pages. Japan's economy enjoyed unprecedented technological growth in the decades after World War II. At first stereotyped as an exported of shoddy goods, Japan enjoyed a worldwide reputation as an efficient manufacturer of high-quality products. This comprehensive analysis of Japanese management treats four related but distinct subject matters: the economic, social, cultural, and political environment pertinent to Japan's industrial and managerial system; the ideologies and background to the Japanese business elite structure and the relationship between government and business; and managerial practices (organizational structure, personnel practices, decision making). The book first describes the postwar technological environment in and outside Japan. It identifies the Schumpeterian characteristics of economic development and the particular set of relationships that Japan had with the United States and with developing nations in Asia that provided it with the incentive and the necessary mechanisms to advance technologically. Name on front fly leaf, otherwise clean.

Jazz Age Beauties: The Lost Collection of Ziegfeld Photographer Alfred Cheney Johnston by: Hudovernik, Robert

Jazz Age Beauties: The Lost Collection of Ziegfeld Photographer Alfred Cheney Johnston
by: Hudovernik, Robert

Hardcover. NY, Universe, 5th pr., 2013, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 272 pages. Despite Prohibition, the '20s was the decade of jazz, flappers and hip flasks. While some took their vote and joined the Woman's Christian Temperance Movement, others, well, took liberties. Compiled here for the first time are more than 200 publicity stills and photos of some of America's first "It" girls--the silent film-era starlets who paved the way for the cacophony of Monroes and Madonnas to follow. Accompanying these iconic images are the stories behind them, including accounts from surviving Ziegfeld Girls, as well as ads featuring them that helped perpetuate the allure of It girl glamour. When rare and striking portraits of these women surfaced on the internet in 1995, author Robert Hudovernik began researching their source. What he discovered was the work of one of the first "star makers" identified most with the Ziegfeld Follies, Alfred Cheney Johnston. Johnston, a member of New York's famous Algonquin Round Table who photographed such celebrities as Mary Pickford, Fanny Brice, the Gish Sisters, and Louise Brooks, fell out of the spotlight with the demise of the revue. A sumptuous snapshot of an era, this book is also a look at the work of this "lost" photographer. Clean copy.

Jesus and After: The First Eighty Years (Studies in Early Christianity) by: E. Bruce Brooks

Jesus and After: The First Eighty Years (Studies in Early Christianity)
by: E. Bruce Brooks

Softcover. Amherst MA, Warring States Project, 1st, 2017, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 191 pages. This book is an overview of the history of Early Christianity. Each chapter is based on one selection from Jewish texts or from those produced by the Jesus sect of Judaism. It gives a sense of how things happened, from the words of certain ancient prophets, to Jesus' effort to bring about those prophecies, to the efforts of his followers to reshape their expectations after his death. It follows the movement as it came to regard Jesus himself as divine, a process which eventually led to the separation of the sect from the parent religion. It ends with a glimpse of a surviving early Christian church on the shores of the Black Sea, and how it appeared to the Roman administrator who was in charge of executing those who, like the Early Christians, refused Emperor worship. From the evidence of two deaconesses whom he tortured, which Pliny reported to Emperor Trajan, we too learn what were the regular practices of that church. Clean copy.

Jews and American Comics: An Illustrated History of an American Art Formby: Buhle, Paul

Jews and American Comics: An Illustrated History of an American Art Form
by: Buhle, Paul

Hardcover. New York, New Press, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 198 pages, b&w illustrations. Readers have long cherished the work of comic masters such as Will Eisner, Jules Feiffer, and Art Spiegelman, all of whom happen to be Jewish. Few, however, are probably aware that the Jewish role in creating the American comic art form is no less significant than the Jewish influence on Hollywood filmmaking. Filled with the most stunning examples of this vital artistic tradition, Jews and American Comics tells us how the "people of the book" became the people of the comic book. With three brief essays by Paul Buhle, the well-known historian of American Jewish life, Jews and American Comics offers readers a pictorial backstory tracing Jewish involvement in comic art from several little-known strips in Yiddish newspapers of the early twentieth century through the mid-century origins of the modern comic book and finally to contemporary comic art, which has at last found its place in museums, in private collections, and on the bookshelves of both critics and millions of avid readers.

Jews and Christians: In Contact and Controversy
by: Horbury, William

Hardcover. Edinburgh, T and T Clark, 1st, 1998, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 342 pages. Jewish-Christian contact and controversy were central to early Christian experience. An understanding of this contact and controversy and its continuation over the centuries is also central to any true understanding of the history of Christianity and of the history of Judaism. The twelve chapters of this book deal especially with the interconnected subjects of polemic and biblical interpretation. Nine are concerned with the ancient world, beginning with post-exilic Jewish writing and the New Testament and going on to later pagan, Jewish and Christian controversies. Three concentrate on medieval and early modern Jewish controversies. Clean copy.

John Locke's Political Philosophy and the Hebrew Bibleby: Yechiel J. M. Leiter

John Locke's Political Philosophy and the Hebrew Bible
by: Yechiel J. M. Leiter

Hardcover. Cambridge UK, Cambridge University Press, 1st, 2018, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, black cloth with gilt lettering on spine, 420 pages. John Locke's treatises on government make frequent reference to the Hebrew Bible, while references to the New Testament are almost completely absent. To date, scholarship has not addressed this surprising characteristic of the treatises. In this book, Yechiel Leiter offers a Hebraic reading of Locke's fundamental political text. In doing so, he formulates a new school of thought in Lockean political interpretation and challenges existing ones. He shows how a grasp of the Hebraic underpinnings of Locke's political theory resolves many of the problems, as well as scholarly debates, that are inherent in reading Locke. More than a book about the political theory of John Locke, this volume is about the foundational ideas of western civilization. While focused on Locke's Hebraism, it demonstrates the persistent relevance of the biblical political narrative to modernity. Light pencil marking to about 25 pages. Otherwise clean and tight. No dust jacket.

John Locke, Toleration and Early Enlightenment Culture (Cambridge Studies in Early Modern British History)by: Marshall, John

John Locke, Toleration and Early Enlightenment Culture (Cambridge Studies in Early Modern British History)
by: Marshall, John

Hardcover. Cambridge UK, Cambridge University Press, 1st, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 767 pages. 'This book is a major new intellectual and cultural history of intolerance and toleration in early modern and early Enlightenment Europe. John Marshall offers an extensive study of late seventeenth-century practices of religious intolerance and toleration in England, Ireland, France, Piedmont and the Netherlands and of the arguments which John Locke and his associates made in defence of 'universal religious toleration'. He analyses early modern and early Enlightenment discussions of toleration; debates over toleration for Jews and Muslims as well as for Christians; the limits of toleration for the intolerant, atheists, 'libertines' and 'sodomites'; and the complex relationships between intolerance and resistance theories including Locke's own Treatises. This study is a significant contribution to the history of the 'republic of letters' of the 1680s and the development of early Enlightenment culture and will be essential reading for scholars of early modern European history, religion, political science, and philosophy.' John Selden: A Life in Scholarship (Two Volumes)by: Toomer, G. J.

John Selden: A Life in Scholarship (Two Volumes)
by: Toomer, G. J.

Hardcover. London, Oxford University Press, reprint, 2011, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Two volume set complete, glossy boards, 977 pages in total. Professor Toomer's two-volume set is not only an indispensable reference work but also provides the first thorough treatment of the scholarship of John Selden, acknowledged as the most learned man of 17th-century England. All of his numerous published works, especially in the fields of history, law, and Hebraica, are critically examined and described in detail. The narrative also relates his writings to contemporary events, in the Civil War and the parliaments (including the Long Parliament) in which he played a prominent part, and to the work of other scholars in Europe (notably Scaliger and Grotius) and in Britain (including Camden and Ussher). Selden's involvement with the Universities, the support of libraries, and the promotion of scholarship is discussed. The work will be an essential resource, not only for the life of a major figure of his time, but also for the intellectual history of 17th-century England in general. No djs as issued, like new.

Jonathan Sewall: Odyssey of an American Loyalist by: Berkin, Carol

Jonathan Sewall: Odyssey of an American Loyalist
by: Berkin, Carol

Hardcover. NY, Columbia University Press, 1st, 1974, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 200 pages. 'Carol Berkin's lively narrative of one British Loyalist's disastrous career uncovers in an arresting manner the other side of the U. S. Revolution. The Revolution, from Sewall's point of view, was an unnecessary and unworthy attack by charlatans and demagogues on the best society the world had yet created. Although Sewall sought to avoid confrontation with his increasingly revolutionary friends, including Sam & John Adams and John Hancock, and at the same time be independent in his appointed posts, he was trapped in the political hierarchy of colonial Massachusetts. When the Revolution began in earnest, he left a beleaguered Boston to take refuge in England where he met the same fate as the other Tory refugees: he was an insignificant colonial, unworthy of royal patronage. Journal of a Lady of Quality Being the Narrative of a Journey from Scotland to the West Indies North Carolina and Portugal in the Years 1774 to 1776
by: Andrews, Evang

Hardcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, 2nd pr., 1922, Book: Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, marbled boards with gray cloth spine, 333 pages plus index. Endpapers map. Janet Schaw, a supporter of the Crown, illustrates the extent to which the American Revolution had, by 1775, become a close, personal insurgency, pitting neighbor against neighbor. Schaw was a young, well-educated Scottish woman who traveled to North Carolina to visit her older brother Robert, the owner of a plantation on the Cape Fear River near Wilmington. She arrived in March of 1775 and while in North Carolina witnessed, among other things, land clearing through controlled burning and the killing of an alligator. More important, she observed a society that was splitting asunder under the stress of revolutionary politics. The decisions of the Wilmington Committee forced men and women along the Cape Fear to take sides. Worn covers with spine cloth coming loose. Binding is solid.
