Religion and The Rise of Capitalism: A Historical Studyby: R.H. Tawney

Religion and The Rise of Capitalism: A Historical Study
by: R.H. Tawney

Hardcover. NY, Harcourt, Brace & Co., reprint, 1926, Book: Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, black cloth with gilt lettering on spine, 337 pages. In one of the true classics of twentieth-century political economy, R. H. Tawney addresses the question of how religion has affected social and economic practices. He tracks the influence of religious thought on capitalist economy and ideology since the Middle Ages, shedding light on the question of why Christianity continues to exert a unique role in the marketplace. In so doing, the book offers an incisive analysis of the morals and mores of contemporary Western culture. Religion and the Rise of Capitalism is more pertinent now than ever, as today the dividing line between the spheres of religion and secular business is shifting, blending ethical considerations with the motivations of the marketplace. By examining the period that saw the transition from medieval to modern theories of social organization, Tawney clarifies the most pressing problems of the end of the century. In tough, muscular, richly varied prose, he tells an absorbing and meaningful story. And in his new introduction, which may well be a classic in its own right, Adam Seligman details Tawney's background and the current status of academic thought on these issues, and he provides a comparative analysis of Tawney with Max Weber that will at once delight and inform readers. Based on his Holland Memorial Lectures, 1922. Hinge cracked at title page. front end papers with bookplate, old ink price.

Renaissance England's Chief Rabbi: John Selden by: Rosenblatt, Jason P.

Renaissance England's Chief Rabbi: John Selden
by: Rosenblatt, Jason P.

Hardcover. Oxford UK, Oxford University Press, 1st, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 314 pages including index. In the midst of an age of prejudice, John Selden's immense, neglected rabbinical works contain magnificent Hebrew scholarship that respects, to an extent remarkable for the times, the self-understanding of Judaism. Scholars celebrated for their own broad and deep learning gladly conceded Selden's superiority and conferred on him titles such as "the glory of the English nation" (Hugo Grotius), "Monarch in letters" (Ben Jonson), "the chief of learned men reputed in this land" (John Milton). Although scholars have examined Selden (1584-1654) as a political theorist, legal and constitutional historian, and parliamentarian, Renaissance England's Chief Rabbi is the first book-length study of his rabbinic and especially talmudic publications, which take up most of the six folio volumes of his complete works and constitute his most mature scholarship. It traces the cultural influence of these works on some early modern British poets and intellectuals, including Jonson, Milton, Andrew Marvell, James Harrington, Henry Stubbe, Nathanael Culverwel, Thomas Hobbes, and Isaac Newton. It also explores some of the post-biblical Hebraic ideas that served as the foundation of Selden's own thought, including his identification of natural law with a set of universal divine laws of perpetual obligation pronounced by God to our first parents in paradise and after the flood to the children of Noah. Selden's discovery in the Talmud and in Maimonides' Mishneh Torah of shared moral rules in the natural, pre-civil state of humankind provides a basis for relationships among human beings anywhere in the world. The history of the religious toleration of Jews in England is incomplete without acknowledgment of the impact of Selden's uncommonly generous Hebrew scholarship. Revel with a Cause: Liberal Satire in Postwar America
by: Stephen E. Kercher

Hardcover. Chicago, University of Chicago Press, 1st, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in bright, unclipped dust jacket. 575 pages, b&w illustrations. Stephen Kercher here provides the first comprehensive look at the satiric humor that flourished in the United States during the 1950s and early 1960s. Focusing on an impressive range of comedy--not just standup comedians of the day but also satirical publications like MAD magazine, improvisational theater groups such as Second City, the motion picture Dr. Strangelove, and TV shows like That Was the Week That Was--Kercher reminds us that the postwar era saw varieties of comic expression that were more challenging and nonconformist than we commonly remember. His history of these comedic luminaries shows that for a sizeable audience of educated, middle-class Americans who shared such liberal views, the period's satire was a crucial mode of cultural dissent. For such individuals, satire was a vehicle through which concerns over the suppression of civil liberties, Cold War foreign policies, blind social conformity, and our heated racial crisis could be productively addressed. Revolutionary Census of New Jersey: An Index Based on Rateables of the Inhabitants of New Jersey During the Period of the American Revolution
by: Stryer-Rodda, Kenn

Hardcover. Lambertville NJ, Hunterdon House, Revised Ed., 1986, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, red cloth with gilt stamping on spine. 413 pages of valuable genealogy information. First published in 1972, this is the Revised Edition, slightly expanded with corrections. From the Anyone who has attempted genealogical research in New Jersey is aware of the fact that the federal census returns for the state for the years 1790, 1800, 1810 and 1820 are not extant. Moreover, only a few fragments of colonial censuses exist, and many records of the colonial period -- public, private, and ecclesiastical -- were destroyed, or taken away by Loyalists during the Revolutionary War. The only records that are state-wide are the tax rateables. Of at least 50,000 such lists compiled between 1773 and 1822, some 1,845 have been preserved. For the Revolutionary period there is at least one list for each of the townships into which the thirteen counties of the colony/state were divided. Lists for Salem, Sussex, Cape May, and Cumberland counties for the years 1773-1774 are complete; for Burlington County, only Chesterfield Township is missing; and for Gloucester County there are lists for four of the seven townships. For the years 1778-1780 there are similar lists for all but three of the remaining townships of the state -- and for them the first existing records are of 1784 or 1785. To keep sharp focus, the lists for the three periods have been separately indexed. No dust jacket issued. Clean, bright copy.

Revolutionary France 1770-1880
by: Furet, Francois

Softcover. Oxford UK, Blackwell, reprint, 1998, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 630 pages. This is an account of 110 years of turbulence and change. At the offset there were not one, but two revolutions: by intent the first was egalitarian, the second - Bonaparte's - authoritarian. The tension between the two characterized the period and shaped the Republic that in the end emerged from the ruins of the Ancien Regime. Clean copy.

Revolutionary War Bounty Land Grants Awarded by State Governmentsby: Bockstruck, Lloyd DeWitt

Revolutionary War Bounty Land Grants Awarded by State Governments
by: Bockstruck, Lloyd DeWitt

Hardcover. Baltimore, Genealogical Publishing Company, 2nd pr., 1997, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, blue cloth stamped with gilt lettering, 608 pages. After the Revolutionary War, the federal government awarded bounty lands to citizens and soldiers for services rendered. In its simplest form, this involved the exchange of free land for military service. Federal records of these Revolutionary War bounty land awards are well known and readily accessible to genealogists. But the federal government was not alone in rewarding its citizens and soldiers with bounty lands. Nine state governments adopted similar policies, generating even more records. Unlike the federal bounty land records, however, these state records are not centralized; instead, they are found in the various states in the form of manuscript records and printed books and are all but inaccessible to the researcher. Until now, that is! Because with this work by Lloyd Bockstruck we now have a master index to state bounty land records, a Revolutionary War resource unparalleled for freshness, originality, and research potential. The nine states that awarded bounty lands in their western reserves or on their western borders (directly affecting the future states of Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Ohio, and Tennessee) are Connecticut, Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Virginia. (The basis for the Connecticut and Georgia awards, by the way, differ from the norm.) Clean, bright copy.

Revolutions in Mathematicsby: Donald Gillies (Ed.)

Revolutions in Mathematics
by: Donald Gillies (Ed.)

Softcover. Oxford UK, Clarendon Press, reprint, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 353 pages. Social revolutions--that is critical periods of decisive, qualitative change--are a commonly acknowledged historical fact. But can the idea of revolutionary upheaval be extended to the world of ideas and theoretical debate? The publication of Kuhn's The Structure of Scientific Revolutions in 1962 led to an exciting discussion of revolutions in the natural sciences. A fascinating, but little known, off-shoot of this was a debate which began in the United States in the mid-1970's as to whether the concept of revolution could be applied to mathematics as well as science. Michael Grove declared that revolutions never occur in mathematics, while Joseph Dauben argued that there have been mathematical revolutions and gave some examples. This book is the first comprehensive examination of the question. It reprints the original papers of Grove, Dauben, and Mehrtens, together with additional chapters giving their current views. To this are added new contributions from nine further experts in the history of mathematics, who each discuss an important episode and consider whether it was a revolution. The whole question of mathematical revolutions is thus examined comprehensively and from a variety of perspectives. This thought-provoking volume will interest mathematicians, philosophers, and historians alike. Small bump to bottom corner, otherwise clean, very good.

Rex Ingram: Visionary Director of the Silent Screenby: Ruth Barton

Rex Ingram: Visionary Director of the Silent Screen
by: Ruth Barton

Hardcover. Lexington KY, University Press of Kentucky, 1st, 2014, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 328 pages, in a bright unclipped dust jacket, b&w illustrations. Noted for his charisma, talent, and striking good looks, director Rex Ingram (18931950) is ranked alongside D. W. Griffith, Marshall Neilan, and Erich von Stroheim as one of the greatest artists of the silent cinema. Ingram briefly studied sculpture at the Yale University School of Art after emigrating from Ireland to the United States in 1911; but he was soon seduced by the new medium of moving pictures and abandoned his studies for a series of jobs in the film industry. Over the next decade, he became one of the most popular directors in Hollywood, directing smash hits such as The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (1921), The Prisoner of Zenda (1922), and Scaramouche (1923). n Rex Ingram, Ruth Barton explores the life and legacy of the pioneering filmmaker, following him from his childhood in Dublin to his life at the top of early Hollywood's A-list and his eventual self-imposed exile on the French Riviera. Ingram excelled in bringing visions of adventure and fantasy to eager audiences, and his films made stars of actors like Rudolph Valentino, Ramon Novarro, and Alice Terry-his second wife and leading lady. With his name a virtual guarantee of box office success, Ingram's career flourished in the 1920s despite the constraints of an increasingly regulated industry and the hostility of Louis B. Mayer, who regarded him as a dangerous maverick. Barton examines the virtuoso director's career and controversial personal life-including his conversion to Islam, the rumors surrounding his ambiguous sexuality, and the circumstances of his untimely death. This definitive biography not only restores the visionary filmmaker to the spotlight but also provides an absorbing look at the daring and exhilarating days of silent-era Hollywood.

Richmond During the War; Four Years of Personal Observation By a Richmond Lady (Leather Bound Hardcover) by: Putnam, Sallie B.

Richmond During the War; Four Years of Personal Observation By a Richmond Lady (Leather Bound Hardcover)
by: Putnam, Sallie B.

Hardcover. NY, Time Life, reprint, 1983, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, 389 pages. Hardcover with no dust jacket. Dark blue leather bound with gilt titles to front cover and spine. Embossed decoration on front cover. Gilt text block edges, red ribbon marker. Clean, tight copy. The commander of a Georgia regiment through much of the Civil War mused later in his memoirs that the heaviest burden fell not upon the man at the front, but upon the woman who waited and prayed for victory: "While the men were carried away with the drunkenness of the war, she dwelt in the stillness of her desolate home." Sallie Brock Putnam spoke for Southern womanhood. She was a native of Madison County, Virginia, and seems to have come from a family of good social standing. The book contains an unexpectedly full history of the Civil War; the author exhibits a strong grasp of strategy and tactics. But at its heart is an incisive eyewitness account of life in a capital that was swollen to four times its normal population by the exigencies of war. Brock's descriptions of Jefferson Davis' inauguration and the Richmond Bread Riot of 1863 are dramatic, but no more so than her accounts of nameless refugees, race relations, opportunistic merchants and blockade runners. Confederate prisons and family matters. In contrast to other female Southern writers of the period, she was more sober and factual, less gossipy and speculative. She wrote with shrewdness and maturity, and with a remarkable lack of self-pity and exaggeration. Yet the reader cannot miss her courage, sacrifice and suffering. Sallie Brock Putnam died in 1911.

Riding the Nightmare. Women & Witchcraftby: Williams, Selma R. And Pamela J.

Riding the Nightmare. Women & Witchcraft
by: Williams, Selma R. And Pamela J.

Hardcover. NY, Atheneum, 1st, 1978, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 228 pages, b&w illustrations. Using legends, myth, folklore, the history, politics and commonsense, the author shows that from the late Middle Ages until the time of the Salem trials, men used the threat of witchcraft as a way of keeping women from power and from reaping the rewards of their own labours. To examine the historical association of women and witchcraft is to see most clearly the social focus that through the centuries has condemned women to ignorance and dependency.

He embodied the core paradoxes of the American ideal: He was a loner who was also a faithful companion, a brave fighter who was also vulnerable. I was astonished to learn from this delightful book that he has existed for eleven generations over a century. By chronicling his amazing ups and downs, Susan Orlean has produced a hugely entertaining and unforgettable reading experience." -- Walter Isaacson.
