The Black Infantry in the West, 1869

The Black Infantry in the West, 1869

Softcover. Norman OK, University of Oklahoma Press , reprint, 1996, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 167 pages. After nearly 200,000 African-American soldiers fought in the Civil War, Congress enacted legislation to authorize regiments of cavalry and infantry for service in the West. The Ninth and Tenth cavalries won fame as "buffalo soldiers" in the Indian wars, nearly overshadowing the critical support role of the Twenty-fourth and Twenty-fifth infantries. Now Arlen L. Fowler brings to light the story of African-American infantry service from 1869 to 1891 in Texas, Indian Territory, the Dakotas, Montana, and Arizona.

The Blind African Slave: Or Memoirs of Boyrereau Brinch, Nicknamed Jeffrey Brace
by: Jeffrey Brace; Editor Kari J. Winter; Contributor Benjamin F. Prentiss

Softcover. Madison WI, University of Wisconsin, reprint., 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover in pictorial wraps, 244 pages. The Blind African Slave recounts the life of Jeffrey Brace (ne Boyrereau Brinch), who was born in West Africa around 1742. Captured by slave traders at the age of sixteen, Brace was transported to Barbados, where he experienced the shock and trauma of slave-breaking and was sold to a New England ship captain. After fighting as an enslaved sailor for two years in the Seven Years War, Brace was taken to New Haven, Connecticut, and sold into slavery. After several years in New England, Brace enlisted in the Continental Army in hopes of winning his manumission. After five years of military service, he was honorably discharged and was freed from slavery. As a free man, he chose in 1784 to move to Vermont, the first state to make slavery illegal. There, he met and married an African woman, bought a farm, and raised a family. Although literate, he was blind when he decided to publish his life story, which he narrated to a white antislavery lawyer, Benjamin Prentiss, who published it in 1810. Upon his death in 1827, Brace was a well-respected abolitionist. In this first new edition since 1810, Kari J. Winter provides a historical introduction, annotations, and original documents that verify and supplement our knowledge of Brace's life and times. Clean copy.

The Body Emblazoned: Dissection and the Human Body in Renaissance Culture by: Sawday, Jonathan

The Body Emblazoned: Dissection and the Human Body in Renaissance Culture
by: Sawday, Jonathan

Softcover. London, Routledge, reprint, 1996, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 325 pages with index, b&w illustrations. An outstanding piece of scholarship and a fascinating read, The Body Emblazoned is a compelling study of the culture of dissection the English Renaissance, which informed intellectual enquiry in Europe for nearly two hundred years. In this outstanding work, Jonathan Sawday explores the dark, morbid eroticism of the Renaissance anatomy theatre, and relates it to not only the great monuments of Renaissance art, but to the very foundation of the modern idea of knowledge. Though the dazzling displays of the exterior of the body in Renaissance literature and art have long been a subject of enquiry, The Body Emblazoned considers the interior of the body, and what it meant to men and women in early modern culture. Clean, bright copy.

The Book of Weirdo: A Retrospective of R. Crumb's Legendary Humor Comics Anthology
by: Cooke, Jon B.

Hardcover. Last Gasp, 1st, 2019, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 288 pages. The Book of Weirdo is the definitive - and hugely entertaining- examination of Weirdo magazine, renowned underground comix cartoonist Robert Crumb's legendary humor comics anthology, which was originally published throughout the 1980s. A "low-brow" counterpoint to Art Spiegelman and Francoise Mouley's rather high-faluttin' RAW comix publication, Weirdo influenced an entire generation of alternative and neo-underground artists, as well as creative refuge for the underground comix veterans, and this book features the complete story of the well-recalled comics magazine, along with testimonials from over 130 of the publication's contributors, including interviews with Weirdo's three editors - R. "Keep on Truckin'" Crumb, Peter "Hate" Bagge, and Aline "The Bunch" Kominsky-Crumb - and publisher "Baba Ron" Turner. As much a history of the alternative comics scene of the 1980s - from New York City punk to Seattle grunge - this exhaustive retrospective includes rare and unseen artwork from that era, as well as new comics from modern-day artists celebrating their love for the great oddball magazine. In its time, the periodical featured the finest work of many artists, particularly the best material by Robert Crumb himself, Weirdo's founder and best known for ZAP Comix, Fritz the Cat, and Mr. Natural, and a man widely heralded as the greatest cartoonist of all time. We get photos of the various contributors, some samples of the work, more than a few brand-spanking-new artistic tributes to the magazine and the people who made it. And lots and lots of stories about what it was like to work for and with Robert Crumb.

The Boston Massacre: An Episode of Dissent and Violenceby: Hansen, Harry

The Boston Massacre: An Episode of Dissent and Violence
by: Hansen, Harry

Hardcover. NY, Hastings House, 1st, 1970, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, lightly worn dust jacket, 191 pages, b&w illustrations. An unsparing account of the famous massacre of March 5, 1770, when a squad of British soldiers, called out to protect a sentry from a Boston mob, fired on civilians, killing 4, fatally wounding a fifth, and injuring 6 others. Was it a massacre, as Boston called it, or "the first battle of the American Revolution," as some writers styled it, or merely a street brawl, as the testimonies of witnesses seem to indicate? Whatever its character, it had great influence in consolidating colonial opposition to the British Government. This is the story of one of the most famous and controversial murder trials in American history, in which John Adams and Josiah Quince, Jr., confirmed patriots, toiled to get the soldiers acquitted to save Boston from retaliation, against the violent opposition of Samuel Adams, who wanted the soldiers convicted as murderers. The British Discovery Of Hinduism In The Eighteenth Century
by: Marshall, P. J. (Ed)

Softcover. Cambridge UK, Cambridge University Press, 1st, 1970, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 310 pages. One of the incidental consequences of the success of British arms in eighteenth-century India was the appearance of a number of publications which reflect the intense curiosity of contemporary Europeans about strange peoples, their manners and religions. Of the three principal religions of India, Hinduism attracted the most attention. European contact with Islam was several centuries old, while few travellers could identify Buddhism with any certainty. This book reprints some of the most significant English contributions to the early European understanding of Hinduism. Paper covers with light wear.

The Brooklyn Dodgers in the 1940s: How Robinson, MacPhail, Reiser and Rickey Changed Baseball
by: Rudy Marzano

Softcover. Jefferson NC, McFarland, 1st pbk, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 229 pages. Before the rise of the Brooklyn Dodgers in the 1940s, baseball was a game of white men, cloth caps and concrete walls. Four men helped to change the sport as America knew it: Branch Rickey, Larry MacPhail, Jackie Robinson and Pete Reiser. These men were essential to the evolution of baseball, especially in their home of Brooklyn's Ebbets Field. It was there that the first major league game was televised, where the batting helmet was developed, where the first walls were padded and the first outfield warning tracks laid down and--with the arrival of Jackie Robinson, it is where the color line was broken. This richly researched history which includes chapters such as "1940: MacPhail Starts a Dodger Dynasty," "1942: FDR Says the Show Must Go On" and "The War Years," presents an exploration of how a crucial decade of Dodger accomplishments transformed American baseball.

The California Progressives
by: George E. Mowry

Softcover. NY, Quadrangle, reprint, 1976, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 344 pages. In this exciting history, Professor Mowry has determined the motives and actions of men who established the Progressive movement in California, and has reconstructed the conditions which opened the way to their ascendancy and fall. The progressive represented, in the author's words, "a pivot on which the democratic process could swing." By examining progressivism in California, its grassroots development and its leaders, Professor Mowry contributes to an understanding of the nature of national progressivism and recent American liberalism. He also illuminates the curious and paradoxical social phenomena of American reform movements - why they begin and why they die. Name on front fly leaf, otherwise clean.

The Calvinist Copernicans: The Reception of the New Astronomy in the Dutch Republic, 1575-1750by: Rienk Vermij

The Calvinist Copernicans: The Reception of the New Astronomy in the Dutch Republic, 1575-1750
by: Rienk Vermij

Hardcover. Amsterdam, Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen, 1st, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, gray cloth stamped in black and white, 433 pages. When it was published in 1543, Copernicus's new astronomy had an enormous impact on intellectual life in early modern Europe, but the reception of his new ideas differed fundamentally from one country to another. Rienk Vermij discusses how--unlike in Roman Catholic lands--discussion in the heavily Calvinist Dutch Republic was initially dominated by humanist scholars who judged Copernicus's work on its mathematical merits. Yet even in this environment, it could not escape eventual philosophical, religious, and political controversies. This book shows how Copernicus's astronomy changed from an alternative cosmology into an established worldview in the Dutch Republic. Name on front fly leaf, otherwise bright and clean.

The Camera Does the Rest: How Polaroid Changed Photographyby: Peter Buse

The Camera Does the Rest: How Polaroid Changed Photography
by: Peter Buse

Hardcover. Chicago, University of Chicago Press, 1st, 2015, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 336 pages. In a world where nearly everyone has a cellphone camera capable of zapping countless instant photos, it can be a challenge to remember just how special and transformative Polaroid photography was in its day. And yet, theres still something magical for those of us who recall waiting for a Polaroid picture to develop. Writing in the context of two Polaroid Corporation bankruptcies, not to mention the obsolescence of its film, Peter Buse argues that Polaroid was, and is, distinguished by its processby the fact that, as the New York Times put it in 1947, the camera does the rest. Polaroid was often dismissed as a toy, but Buse takes it seriously, showing how it encouraged photographic play as well as new forms of artistic practice. Drawing on unprecedented access to the archives of the Polaroid Corporation, Buse reveals Polaroid as photography at its most intimate, where the photographer, photograph, and subject sit in close proximity in both time and spacemaking Polaroid not only the perfect party camera but also the tool for frankly salacious pictures taking. Along the way, Buse tells the story of the Polaroid Corporation and its ultimately doomed hard-copy wager against the rising tide of digital imaging technology. Still in publisher's shrinkwrap.

"Early in the afternoon of May 22, 1856, ardent pro-slavery Congressman Preston S. Brooks of South Carolina strode into the United States Senate Chamber in Washington, D.C., and began beating renowned anti-slavery Senator Charles Sumner with a cane until it splintered and the helpless Massachusetts senator lay unconscious and covered in blood. The Card: Collectors Con Men and the True Story of History's Most Desired Baseball Cardby: O'Keeffe Michael and Teri Thompson

The Card: Collectors Con Men and the True Story of History's Most Desired Baseball Card
by: O'Keeffe Michael and Teri Thompson

Hardcover. NY, William Morrow, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket, 245 pages, b&w illustrations. Only a few dozen T206 Wagners are known to still exist, having been released in limited numbers just after the turn of the twentieth century. Most, with their creases and stains, look like they've been around for nearly one hundred years. But one -- The Card --appears to have defied the travails of time. Its sharp corners and still-crisp portrait make it the single-most famous -- and most desired -- baseball card on the planet, valued today at more than two million dollars. It has transformed a simple hobby into a billion-dollar industry that is at times as lawless as the Wild West. Everything about The Card, which has made men wealthy as well as poisoned lifelong relationships, is fraught with controversy -- from its uncertain origins to the nagging possibility that it might not be exactly as it seems. In this intriguing, eye-opening, and groundbreaking look at a uniquely American obsession, award-winning investigative reporters Michael O'Keeffe and Teri Thompson follow The Card's trail from a Florida flea market to the hands of the world's most prominent collectors.

The Career of Toleration: John Locke, Jonas Proast, and After by: Vernon, Richard

The Career of Toleration: John Locke, Jonas Proast, and After
by: Vernon, Richard

Hardcover. Montreal, McGill-Queen's University Press, 1st, 1997, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, gray cloth stamped in black. 164 pages. The Career of Toleration considers the Locke-Proast controversy from the standpoint of political theory, examining Locke's and Proast's texts and tracing their relationship to later discussions of toleration. Vernon reconstructs the grounds of the dispute, drawing attention to the long-term importance of the arguments and evaluating their relative strength. He then examines issues of toleration in later contexts, specifically James Fitzjames Stephen's critique of John Stuart Mill, the perfectionist alternative to contractualist liberalism, and the view that the traditional attachment to toleration must, by the force of its own arguments, move from liberalism to a defence of a much stronger form of democracy. Arguing that Locke's and Proast's exchange marks a turning point in the intellectual history that has helped to structure the terms of modern political debate, Vernon presents a solid case for thinking that the exchange between Locke and Proast is as important for the twentieth century as it was for the seventeenth. Bright, clean copy.

The Cause: The American Revolution and its Discontents, 1773-1783by: Joseph J. Ellis

The Cause: The American Revolution and its Discontents, 1773-1783
by: Joseph J. Ellis

Hardcover. NY, Liveright, 1st, 2021, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. 375 pages. Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Joseph J. Ellis offers an epic account of the origins and clashing ideologies of America's revolutionary era, recovering a war more brutal, and more disorienting, than any in our history, save perhaps the Civil War. For more than two centuries, historians have debated the history of the American Revolution, disputing its roots, its provenance, and above all, its meaning. These questions have intrigued Ellis-one of our most celebrated scholars of American history-throughout his entire career. With this much-anticipated volume, he at last brings the story of the revolution to vivid life, with "surprising relevance" (Susan Dunn) for our modern era. Clean copy.

The Character of John Adamsby: Shaw, Peter

The Character of John Adams
by: Shaw, Peter

Hardcover. Chapel Hill NC, University of North Carolina Press, 1st, 1976, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 324 pages, b&w illustrations. Published for the Williamsburg, VA Institute of Early American History & Culture. Instead of recounting, in detail, the public events of John Adams's extraordinary career, Peter Shaw views as a whole Adams's character, thought, and acts, personalizing for the reader the most remote of our Founding Fathers. This compact but comprehensive biography brilliantly portrays the poignant revelations of John Adams's inner life implicit in the recently released Adams family manuscripts. The formal side of Adams is reconciled with his remarkably colorful private life by the author's penetrating grasp of the whole man. Adams's behavior appears less eccentric when viewed in the context of its origin in the village life of eighteenth~century Massachusetts; and his politics and ideas appear less abstractly motivated when viewed in the light of the evolution of his character. The Children of Aataentsic; A History of the Huron People to 1660 by: Bruce G. Trigger

The Children of Aataentsic; A History of the Huron People to 1660
by: Bruce G. Trigger

Softcover. McGill-Queen's University Press, reprint, 1987, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 913 pages, b&w illustrations, maps. Trigger's work integrates insights from archaeology, history, ethnology, linguistics, and geography. This wide knowledge allows him to show that, far from being a static prehistoric society quickly torn apart by European contact and the fur trade, almost every facet of Iroquoian culture had undergone significant change in the centuries preceding European contact. He argues convincingly that the European impact upon native cultures cannot be correctly assessed unless the nature and extent of precontact change is understood. His study not only stands Euro-American stereotypes and fictions on their heads, but forcefully and consistently interprets European and Indian actions, thoughts, and motives from the perspective of the Huron culture. The Children of Aataentsic revises widely accepted interpretations of Indian behaviour and challenges cherished myths about the actions of some celebrated Europeans during the "heroic age" of Canadian history. In a new preface, Trigger describes and evaluates contemporary controversies over the ethnohistory of eastern Canada.

The China Mission: George Marshall's Unfinished War 1945-1947 by: Daniel Kurtz-Phelan

The China Mission: George Marshall's Unfinished War 1945-1947
by: Daniel Kurtz-Phelan

Hardcover. NY, WW Norton & Co,, 1st, 2018, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. As World War II came to an end, General George Marshall was renowned as the architect of Allied victory. Set to retire, he instead accepted what he thought was a final mission-this time not to win a war, but to stop one. Across the Pacific, conflict between Chinese Nationalists and Communists threatened to suck in the United States and escalate into revolution. His assignment was to broker a peace, build a Chinese democracy, and prevent a Communist takeover, all while staving off World War III. In his thirteen months in China, Marshall journeyed across battle-scarred landscapes, grappled with Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai, and plotted and argued with Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek and his brilliant wife, often over card games or cocktails. The results at first seemed miraculous. But as they started to come apart, Marshall was faced with a wrenching choice. Its consequences would define the rest of his career, as the secretary of state who launched the Marshall Plan and set the standard for American leadership, and the shape of the Cold War and the US-China relationship for decades to come. It would also help spark one of the darkest turns in American civic life, as Marshall and the mission became a first prominent target of McCarthyism, and the question of "who lost China" roiled American politics. Remainder dot to top edge, otherwise like new.
