Women's Lives, Men's Lawsby: MacKinnon, Catharine A.

Women's Lives, Men's Laws
by: MacKinnon, Catharine A.

Hardcover. Cambridge MA, Harvard University Press, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 558 pages. In the past twenty-five years, no one has been more instrumental than Catharine MacKinnon in making equal rights real for women. As Peter Jennings once put it, more than anyone else in legal studies, she "has made it easier for other women to seek justice." This collection, the first since MacKinnon's celebrated Feminism Unmodified appeared in 1987, brings together previously uncollected and unpublished work in the national arena from 1980 to the present, defining her clear, coherent, consistent approach to reframing the law of men on the basis of the lives of women.By making visible the deep gender bias of existing law, MacKinnon has recast legal debate and action on issues of sex discrimination, sexual abuse, prostitution, pornography, and racism. The essays in this volume document and illuminate some of the momentous and ongoing changes to which this work contributes; the recognition of sexual harassment, rape, and battering as claims for sexual discrimination; the redefinition of rape in terms of women's actual experience of sexual violation; and the reframing of the pornography debate around harm rather than morality. The perspectives in these essays have played an essential part in changing American law and remain fundamental to the project of building a sex-equal future. Clean copy.

Women's Rights and Transatlantic Antislavery in the Era of Emancipation by: Sklar, Kathryn Kish/ Stewart, James Brewer

Women's Rights and Transatlantic Antislavery in the Era of Emancipation
by: Sklar, Kathryn Kish/ Stewart, James Brewer

Softcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 385 pages, b&w illustrations. Two epochal developments profoundly influenced the history of the Atlantic world between 1770 and 1870-the rise of women's rights activism and the drive to eliminate chattel slavery. The contributors to this volume, eminent scholars from a variety of disciplines, investigate the intertwining histories of abolitionism and feminism on both sides of the Atlantic during this dynamic century of change. They illuminate the many ways that the two movements developed together and influenced one another. Approaching a wide range of transnational topics, the authors ask how conceptions of slavery and gendered society differed in the United States, France, Germany, and Britain; how women's activism reached across national boundaries; how racial identities affected the boundaries of women's activism; and what was distinctive about African-American women's participation as activists. Their thought-provoking answers provide rich insights into the history of struggles for social justice across the Atlantic world. Sine faded. Clean copy.

Work, Identity, and Legal Status at Rome: A Study of the Occupational Inscriptionsby: Sandra R. Joshel

Work, Identity, and Legal Status at Rome: A Study of the Occupational Inscriptions
by: Sandra R. Joshel

Softcover. Norman OK, University of Oklahoma Press, 1992, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 239 pages. In Work, Identity, and Legal Status at Rome, Sandra R. Joshel examines Roman commemorative inscriptions from the first and second centuries A.D. to determine ways in which slaves, freed slaves, and unprivileged freeborn citizens used work to frame their identities. The inscriptions indicate the significance of work-as a source of community, a way to reframe the conditions of legal status, an assertion of activity against upper-class passivity, and a standard of assessment based on economic achievement rather than birth. Drawing on sociology, anthropology, ethnography, and women's history, this thoroughly documented volume illuminates the dynamics of work and slavery at Rome. Working Girls: An American Brothel, Circa 1892 - The Private Photographs of William Goldmanby: Johnson, Robert Flynn

Working Girls: An American Brothel, Circa 1892 - The Private Photographs of William Goldman
by: Johnson, Robert Flynn

Hardcover. NY, Glitterati, 1st, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. After becoming captivated by the beauty and originality of a group of nineteenth-century photographs, Robert Flynn Johnson has uncovered more than two hundred vintage images of women who lived and worked at a brothel in Reading, Pennsylvania, circa 1892, and showcases them here for the first time for a wider public. Working Girls details the private, creative archive of commercial photographer William Goldman, whose imagery paints a complete picture of the environments that these women inhabited - from inside the brothel, posing artistically for the camera, to their off-duty routines, such as reading, smoking, and bathing. Taken two decades before the famous E. J. Bellocq photographs of prostitutes in Storyville, New Orleans, circa 1913, Johnson chronicles the aesthetic, historical, and sociological importance of Goldman's artwork in the history of photography, referencing them alongside paintings and photographs by such artists as Degas, Eakins, and Monsieur X. With essays that provide an insightful historical overview of Goldman's work in context of the period in which they were taken, by feminist and cultural luminaries including Dita Von Teese, Ruth Rosen and Dennita Sewell, this extraordinary collection provides a personal visual record of lives of these women while also offering a deeper understanding of the 'working girls' that existed in that era. Wrath of the Gods, The: Masterpieces by Rubens, Michelangelo, and Titianby: Atkins, Christopher D. M.

Wrath of the Gods, The: Masterpieces by Rubens, Michelangelo, and Titian
by: Atkins, Christopher D. M.

Hardcover. Philadelphia, PA, Philadelphia Museum of Art in association with Yale University Press, 1st, 2015, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover with no dust jacket. Very clean, like new in publishers shrinkwrap. Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) proudly described his monumental painting Prometheus Bound as first among "the flower of my stock." This singular work demonstrates how Rubens engaged with and responded to his predecessors Michelangelo and Titian, with whom he shared an interest in depictions of physical torment. The Wrath of the Gods offers an in-depth case study of the Flemish artist's creative process and aesthetic, while also demonstrating why this particular painting has appealed to viewers over time. Many scholars have elaborated on Rubens's affinity for Titian, but his connection to Michelangelo has received far less attention. This study presents a new interpretation of Prometheus Bound, showing how Rubens created parallels between the pagan hero Prometheus and Michelangelo's Risen Christ from the Sistine Chapel's Last Judgment. Christopher D. M. Atkins expands our understanding of artistic transmission by elucidating how Rubens synthesized the works he saw in Italy, Spain, and his native Antwerp, and how Prometheus Bound in turn influenced Dutch, Flemish, and Italian artists. By emulating Rubens's composition, these artists circulated it throughout Europe, broadening its influence from his day to ours.

Writing in Gold: Byzantine Society and is Icons by: Robin Cormack

Writing in Gold: Byzantine Society and is Icons
by: Robin Cormack

Hardcover. London, George Philip, 1st, 1985, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. 270 pages, illustrated in b&w. Writing in Gold is a bold and challenging statement about the importance of the visual arts in a largely illiterate society. Exploring the height of Byzantine society from the 6th to the 12th centuries through a survey of the period's surviving paintings, mosaics, and metalware, the book shows how these art objects molded attitudes and beliefs in the medieval world. The examples chosen cover the full range of Byzantine society from the sophisticated urban environment of Constantinople, where emperors used art to maintain loyalty and support for the system, to the life of a small community on Cyprus, where a recluse used art to glorify himself to his disciples. Written in a lively style, and drawing on new and original material throughout, Writing in Gold illuminates an intriguing period in art history. Small name on front fly leaf, otherwise clean.

Writing the Range: Race, Class, and Culture in the Women's West by: Jameson, Elizabeth & Armitage, Susan (editors)

Writing the Range: Race, Class, and Culture in the Women's West
by: Jameson, Elizabeth & Armitage, Susan (editors)

Softcover. Norman OK, University of Oklahoma Press, 1st, 1997, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 656 pages. In mythic sagas of the American West, the wide western range offered boundless opportunity to a limited cast of white men. Buffalo roamed, deer and antelope played, and women's voices were never heard. Writing the Range allows us to hear many long-silenced women: Spanish-Mexican settlers and American Indians on New Spain's northern frontiers; Chinese, Basque, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Slavic, and Irish immigrants; film stars Dolores del Rio and Lupe Velez; Navajos and African Americans who moved to western cities during World War II; and the activist Mothers of East Los Angeles, who organized to resist environmental dangers to their community. A valuable introduction to the rapidly changing field of western history, Writing the Range explains clearly how race, class, and culture are constructed and connected. The first section examines issues raised by more than a decade of multicultural western women's histories; following are six chronological sections spanning four centuries. Each section offers a short introduction connecting is essays and placing them in analytic and historical perspective. Clean copy.

Yalta 1945: Europe and America at the Crossroadsby: Fraser J. Harbutt

Yalta 1945: Europe and America at the Crossroads
by: Fraser J. Harbutt

Hardcover. London, Cambridge University Press, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. This revisionist study of Allied diplomacy from 1941 to 1946 challenges Americocentric views of the period and highlights Europe's neglected role. Fraser J. Harbutt, drawing on international sources, shows that in planning for the future Churchill, Roosevelt, Stalin, and others self-consciously operated into 1945, not on "East/West" lines but within a "Europe/America" political framework characterized by the plausible prospect of Anglo-Russian collaboration and persisting American detachment. Harbutt then explains the destabilizing transformation around the time of the pivotal Yalta conference of February 1945, when a sudden series of provocative initiatives, manipulations, and miscues interacted with events to produce the breakdown of European solidarity and the Anglo-Soviet nexus, an evolving Anglo-American alignment, and new tensions that led finally to the Cold War. This fresh perspective, stressing structural, geopolitical, and traditional impulses and constraints, raises important new questions about the enduringly controversial transition from World War II to a cold war that no statesman wanted.
