Billy Name:The Silver Age: Black and White Photographs from Andy Warhol's Factory
by: James, Dagon

Hardcover. US, Reel Art Press, 1st, 2014, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Large heavy book, 448 pages, illustrated throughout in b&w. Clean, unmarked copy with only minor wear to dust jacket. This breathtaking tome is the definitive and comprehensive collection of Billy Name's black-and-white photographs from Warhol's Factory. Name's photographs from this period (1964-68) are one of the most important photographic documents of any single artist in history. Name lived in a tiny closet at the Factory. He was responsible for the legendary "silverizing" of the space using aluminum paint and foil to complete the instillation. When Warhol gave Name a Pentax Honeywell 35mm camera, he took on the role of resident photographer and archivist. This visual essay, produced in collaboration with Billy name, offers an extensive trip through Warhol's world. Name photographed the day-to-day happenings at The Factory with Andy, including visits from Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground, Nico, Edie Sedgwick, Ivy Nicholson and Bob Dylan, and filming Screen Tests and features such as Chelsea Girls, Vinyl and My Hustler.

Black Bondage in the North
by: McManus, Edgar J.

Hardcover. Syracuse NY, Syracuse University Press, 1st, 1973, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Good, Hardcover in a worn dust jacket with fading to spine, 236 pages. This foremost history of the Northern slave system examines its operation from its colonial beginnings to its dissolution. Unlike the South, which used slaves primarily for agricultural labor, the North trained and diversified its slave force to meet the needs of a complicated economy. In the early 19th century the author sees that economic displacement allows an emancipation of blacks that is at least as beneficial to the masters as to the blacks. Black Jacks: African American Seamen in the Age of Sailby: W. Jeffrey Bolster

Black Jacks: African American Seamen in the Age of Sail
by: W. Jeffrey Bolster

Softcover. Cambridge MA, Harvard University Press, reprint, 1998, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 310 pages, b&w illustrations. Few Americans, black or white, recognize the degree to which early African American history is a maritime history. W. Jeffrey Bolster shatters the myth that black seafaring in the age of sail was limited to the Middle Passage. Seafaring was one of the most significant occupations among both enslaved and free black men between 1740 and 1865. Tens of thousands of black seamen sailed on lofty clippers and modest coasters. They sailed in whalers, warships, and privateers. Some were slaves, forced to work at sea, but by 1800 most were free men, seeking liberty and economic opportunity aboard ship.Bolster brings an intimate understanding of the sea to this extraordinary chapter in the formation of black America. Because of their unusual mobility, sailors were the eyes and ears to worlds beyond the limited horizon of black communities ashore. Sometimes helping to smuggle slaves to freedom, they were more often a unique conduit for news and information of concern to blacks. But for all its opportunities, life at sea was difficult. Blacks actively contributed to the Atlantic maritime culture shared by all seamen, but were often outsiders within it. Capturing that tension, Black Jacks examines not only how common experiences drew black and white sailors together-even as deeply internalized prejudices drove them apart-but also how the meaning of race aboard ship changed with time. Bolster traces the story to the end of the Civil War, when emancipated blacks began to be systematically excluded from maritime work. Rescuing African American seamen from obscurity, this stirring account reveals the critical role sailors played in helping forge new identities for black people in America.

Black Out: Silhouettes Then and Nowby: Naeem, Asma

Black Out: Silhouettes Then and Now
by: Naeem, Asma

Hardcover. Washington DC, National Portrait Gallery/Princeton University Press, 1st, 2018, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, Accompanied exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery. Illustrated. First major publication to focus on the development of silhouettes, gathers leading experts to shed light on the surprisingly complex historical, political, and social underpinnings of this ostensibly simple art form. This richly illustrated volume explores likenesses of everyone from presidents and celebrities to everyday citizens and enslaved people. Ultimately, the book reveals how silhouettes registered the paradoxes of the unstable young nation, roiling with tensions over slavery and political independence. Primarily tracing the rise of the silhouette in the decades leading up to the Civil War, Black Out also considers the ubiquity of the genre today, particularly in contemporary art. Historical research and four contemporary artists: Kara Walker, Kristi Malakoff, Kumi Yamashita, and Camille Utterback. Still in publisher's shrinkwrap.

by: William Loren Katz

Hardcover. NY, Atheneum, 3rd pr., 1999, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. In a clear, straightforward style, Katz describes the settlement of the Ohio and Mississippi Valleys (covering Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas, and Missouri) by African Americans seeking freedom, including biographical sketches of men and women who formed churches, started schools, or were politically active in their region. Some of these settlers were fugitive slaves; several set up stations on the Underground Railroad with the aid of the Quakers; others were farmers, poets, and soldiers. In several states, they helped form black regiments in the Civil War. Chronologically arranged, the book introduces many lesser-known personages not found in most collective biographies and places them in a broader context of U.S. history as a whole.

Blast from the Past: A Pictorial History of Radio's First 75 Yearsby: B. Eric Rhoads

Blast from the Past: A Pictorial History of Radio's First 75 Years
by: B. Eric Rhoads

Hardcover. W. Palm Beach FL, Streamline Press, 1st, 1996, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 463 pages, profusely illustrated with b&w photos. Radio has just celebrated its 75th anniversary and it's as vital and varied as ever. Rhoads, a zealous radio historian and archivist, has captured radio's exuberance and fluency in this marvelous collection of more than 900 photographs, many of which have never before been published. This collection of portraits, both posed and candid, of radio personalities is a veritable radio hall of fame, showcasing everyone from Jack Benny to Howard Stern. Rhoads begins with photographs chronicling the rise of the pioneering Pittsburgh station, KDKA, the first to achieve continuous broadcasting, then keeps pace with radio's rapid growth, offering rare documentation of every type of on-air performer, from men of the cloth delivering the first on-air services to vaudevillians, conductors, sportscasters, and dramatists, many of whom went on to achieve fame in Hollywood. Styles change, but the magic continues as radio continues to evolve in conjunction with its competitor, television. On-air performers gave way to disc jockeys and talk show hosts, but talents such as Garrison Keillor and various NPR contributors have helped keep imaginative radio alive and well.

Blood in the Water: The Attica Prison Uprising of 1971 and Its Legacy by: Heather Ann Thompson

Blood in the Water: The Attica Prison Uprising of 1971 and Its Legacy
by: Heather Ann Thompson

Hardcover. NY, Pantheon Books, 6th pr., 2016, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket, 724 pages. On September 9, 1971, nearly 1,300 prisoners took over the Attica Correctional Facility in upstate New York to protest years of mistreatment. Holding guards and civilian employees hostage, the prisoners negotiated with officials for improved conditions during the four long days and nights that followed. On September 13, the state abruptly sent hundreds of heavily armed troopers and correction officers to retake the prison by force. Their gunfire killed thirty-nine men hostages as well as prisoners and severely wounded more than one hundred others. In the ensuing hours, weeks, and months, troopers and officers brutally retaliated against the prisoners. And, ultimately, New York State authorities prosecuted only the prisoners, never once bringing charges against the officials involved in the retaking and its aftermath and neglecting to provide support to the survivors. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize. Clean copy.

"Keep on Truckin'" Crumb, Peter "Hate" Bagge, and Aline "The Bunch" Kominsky-Crumb - and publisher "Baba Ron" Turner. 288 pages.

Bound for Canaan: The Underground Railroad and the War for the Soul of America by: Bordewich, Fergus

Bound for Canaan: The Underground Railroad and the War for the Soul of America
by: Bordewich, Fergus

Hardcover. NY, Amistad/HarperCollins, 3rd pr., 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. 540 pages, b&w illustrations, index. An important book of epic scope on America's first racially integrated, religiously-inspired political movement for change-The Underground Railroad, a movement peopled by daring heroes and heroines, and everyday folk For most, the mention of the Underground Railroad evokes images of hidden tunnels, midnight rides, and hairsbreadth escapes. Yet the Underground Railroad's epic story is much more morally complex and politically divisive than even the myths suggest. Against a backdrop of the country's westward expansion, which brought together Easterners who had engaged in slavery primarily in the abstract alongside slaveholding Southerners and their slaves, arose a clash of values that evolved into a fierce fight for nothing less than the country's soul. Beginning six decades before the Civil War, freedom-seeking blacks and pious whites worked together to save tens of thousands of lives, often at the risk of great physical danger to themselves. Not since the American Revolution had the country engaged in an act of such vast and profound civil disobedience that not only subverted federal law but also went against prevailing mores.

Boyhood Photos of J.H. Lartigue: The Family Album of a Gilded Age
by: Jacques-Henri Lartigue/ Ami Guichard

Hardcover. Switzerland, A. Guichard, 1st, 1966, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, A very good hardcover copy, 126 pages with decorative burgundy boards and gilding on the spine and covers. A book of 164 facsimile tipped-in plates. Production by Edita S. A. Lausanne. Illustration by Imprimerie Centrale Lausanne S. A. Text by Offset Jean Genoud S. A. Lausanne. Engraving by Photogravure Dupuis & Cie Lausanne. Binding by Maurice Busenhart, Lausanne. At the age of seven, at the begining of the 20th century, Lartique received a camera as a gift from his father, and from then on, day after day, he would try to 'fix' scenes of his domestic life, having been allowed by the conditions of his life sufficient leisure to do so." Roger Therond. In this, Lartique's premier collection, presented in the form of an album of pasted-in pictures, we are treated to his madcap antics with flying machines and automobiles when they were still a novelty. With his cousins, we have pictures of their three-seater peddle racing machine of their own invention - gliders built and flown in the field, crashes included, an inflatable suit for drifting in the river without getting wet . These are photographs one would not see in a typical family album, rather, they are the record of a joyful and artistic youth. Clean copy.
