The Calvinist Copernicans: The Reception of the New Astronomy in the Dutch Republic, 1575-1750by: Rienk Vermij

The Calvinist Copernicans: The Reception of the New Astronomy in the Dutch Republic, 1575-1750
by: Rienk Vermij

Hardcover. Amsterdam, Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen, 1st, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, gray cloth stamped in black and white, 433 pages. When it was published in 1543, Copernicus's new astronomy had an enormous impact on intellectual life in early modern Europe, but the reception of his new ideas differed fundamentally from one country to another. Rienk Vermij discusses how--unlike in Roman Catholic lands--discussion in the heavily Calvinist Dutch Republic was initially dominated by humanist scholars who judged Copernicus's work on its mathematical merits. Yet even in this environment, it could not escape eventual philosophical, religious, and political controversies. This book shows how Copernicus's astronomy changed from an alternative cosmology into an established worldview in the Dutch Republic. Name on front fly leaf, otherwise bright and clean.

Einstein and the Quantum: The Quest of the Valiant Swabian by: Stone, A. Douglas

Einstein and the Quantum: The Quest of the Valiant Swabian
by: Stone, A. Douglas

Hardcover. Princeton NJ, Princeton University Press, 2nd pr., 2013, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 332 pages, b&w illustrations. Einstein and the Quantum reveals for the first time the full significance of Albert Einstein's contributions to quantum theory. Einstein famously rejected quantum mechanics, observing that God does not play dice. But, in fact, he thought more about the nature of atoms, molecules, and the emission and absorption of light-the core of what we now know as quantum theory-than he did about relativity. A compelling blend of physics, biography, and the history of science, Einstein and the Quantum shares the untold story of how Einstein-not Max Planck or Niels Bohr-was the driving force behind early quantum theory. It paints a vivid portrait of the iconic physicist as he grappled with the apparently contradictory nature of the atomic world, in which its invisible constituents defy the categories of classical physics, behaving simultaneously as both particle and wave. And it demonstrates how Einstein's later work on the emission and absorption of light, and on atomic gases, led directly to Erwin Schrodinger's breakthrough to the modern form of quantum mechanics. The book sheds light on why Einstein ultimately renounced his own brilliant work on quantum theory, due to his deep belief in science as something objective and eternal. Clean copy.

Reconstitutions of Transporters, Receptors, and Pathological States
by: Racker, Efraim

Softcover. NY, Academic Press, 1st, 1985, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 271 pages. Reconstitutions of Transporters, Receptors, and Pathological States presents lectures about the reconstitutions of transporters, receptors, and pathological states. The book discusses the principles and strategies of the resolution and reconstitution of soluble pathways and membrane complexes; and lessons in the resolution and reconstitution after the natural structure of the membrane has been destroyed. The text then describes the analyses of reconstituted vesicles; the ATP synthetase of oxidative phosphorylation; and the pumps of plasma membranes. The ATP-driven ion pumps in organelles, microorganisms, and plants; the proton motive force generators, electron transport chains, and bacteriorhodopsin; and facilitated diffusion, symporters, and antiporters are also considered. The book further tackles plasma membrane receptors, as well as the reconstitutions of pathological states. Biochemists, molecular biologists, and cell biologists will find the book invaluable. The Post-Darwinian Controversies: A Study of the Protestant Struggle to Come to Terms with Darwin in Great Britain and America, 1870-1900 by: Moore, James R.

The Post-Darwinian Controversies: A Study of the Protestant Struggle to Come to Terms with Darwin in Great Britain and America, 1870-1900
by: Moore, James R.

Softcover. London, Cambridge, University Press, reprint, 1981, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 514 pages. The Post-Darwinian Controversies offers an original interpretation of Protestant responses to Darwin after 1870, viewing them in a transatlantic perspective and as a constitutive part of the history of post-Darwinian evolutionary thought. The impact of evolutionary theory on the religious consciousness of the nineteenth century has commonly been seen in terms of a 'conflict' or 'warfare' between science and theology. Dr. Moore's account begins by discussing the polemical origins and baneful effects of the 'military metaphor', and this leads to a revised view of the controversies based on an analysis of the underlying intellectual struggle to come to terms with Darwin. Lectures in Neuroscienceby: Yuste, Rafael

Lectures in Neuroscience
by: Yuste, Rafael

Softcover. NY, Columbia University Press, 1st, 2023, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 456 pages. The human brain is perhaps the most intricate and fascinating object in the known universe. Through a mysterious process, the activity of billions of neurons within a few pounds of matter generates the unfathomable complexity of the mind. This book is a conversational and accessible introduction to the brain. Beginning from basic elements of neuroscience, the acclaimed scientist Rafael Yuste guides readers through increasingly sophisticated topics, developing a unified framework for how the brain functions. He describes how the brain is organized and how it develops, how neurons operate and form neural circuits, and how these circuits function as neural networks to generate behavior and mental states. Yuste challenges the traditional view that the brain is an input-output machine that reacts reflexively to sensory stimuli. Instead, he argues, the purpose of the brain is to make a predictive model of the world in order to anticipate the future and choose successful courses of action. He gives readers insight into the workings of sensory and motor systems and the neurobiological basis of our perceptions, thoughts, emotions, memories, and consciousness. Peppered with anecdotes and illustrated with elegant drawings and diagrams, this succinct and cohesive book is accessible to readers without previous background in the subject. Clean, bright copy.

by: Ratti, Carlo, Autor: Claudel, Matthew

Hardcover. New , Yale University Press, 1st, 2016, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 180 pages. The authors explain some of the forces behind urban change and offer new visions of the many possibilities for tomorrow's city. Pervasive digital systems that layer our cities are transforming urban life. The authors provide a front-row seat to this change. Their work at the MIT Senseable City Laboratory allows experimentation and implementation of a variety of urban initiatives and concepts, from assistive condition-monitoring bicycles to trash with embedded tracking sensors, from mobility to energy, from participation to production. They call for a new approach to envisioning cities: futurecraft, a symbiotic development of urban ideas by designers and the public. Elements, Principles, and Corpuscles: A Study of Atomism and Chemistry in the Seventeenth Century by: Clericuzio, Antonio

Elements, Principles, and Corpuscles: A Study of Atomism and Chemistry in the Seventeenth Century
by: Clericuzio, Antonio

Hardcover. Netherlands, Kluwer Academic Publishers, 1st, 2000, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 223 pages. In Elements, Principles and Particles, Antonio Clericuzio explores the relationships between chemistry and corpuscular philosophy in the age of the Scientific Revolution. Science historians have regarded chemistry and corpuscular philosophy as two distinct traditions. Clericuzio's view is that since the beginning of the 17th century atomism and chemistry were strictly connected. This is attested by Daniel Sennert and by many hitherto little-known French and English natural philosophers. They often combined a corpuscular theory of matter with Paracelsian chemical (and medical) doctrines. Boyle plays a central part in the present book: Clericuzio redefines Boyle's chemical views, by showing that Boyle did not subordinate chemistry to the principles of mechanical philosophy. When Boyle explained chemical phenomena, he had recourse to corpuscles endowed with chemical, not mechanical, properties. The combination of chemistry and corpuscular philosophy was adopted by a number of chemists active in the last decades of the 17th century, both in England and on the Continent. Using a large number of primary sources, the author challenges the standard view of the corpuscular theory of matter as identical with the mechanical philosophy. He points out that different versions of the corpuscular philosophy flourished in the 17th century. Most of them were not based on the mechanical theory, i.e. on the view that matter is inert and has only mechanical properties. Throughout the 17th century, active principles, as well as chemical properties, are attributed to corpuscles. Given its broad coverage, the book is a significant contribution to both history of science and history of philosophy.

The Mating Mind: How Sexual Choice Shaped the Evolution of Human Natureby: Geoffrey Miller

The Mating Mind: How Sexual Choice Shaped the Evolution of Human Nature
by: Geoffrey Miller

Hardcover. London, William Heinemann , 1st, 2000, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. Many aspects of how and why the human mind evolved remain mysterious. While Darwinian natural selection has successfully explained the evolution of much of life on earth, it has never seemed fully adequate to explain the aspects of our minds that seem most uniquely and profoundly human--art, morality, consciousness, creativity, and language. Nor has natural selection offered solutions to how the human brain evolved so quickly--in less than 2 million years--and why such a large brain remains unique to our species. Now, in The Mating Mind, a pioneering work of evolutionary science, these aspects of human nature are at last explored and explained. Until fairly recently most biologists have ignored or rejected Darwin's claims for his other great theory of evolution--sexual selection through mate choice, which favors traits simply because they prove attractive to the opposite sex. But over the last two decades, biologists have taken up Darwin's insights into how the reproduction of the sexiest is as much a focus of evolution as the survival of the fittest. Clean copy.

Revolutions in Mathematicsby: Donald Gillies (Ed.)

Revolutions in Mathematics
by: Donald Gillies (Ed.)

Softcover. Oxford UK, Clarendon Press, reprint, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 353 pages. Social revolutions--that is critical periods of decisive, qualitative change--are a commonly acknowledged historical fact. But can the idea of revolutionary upheaval be extended to the world of ideas and theoretical debate? The publication of Kuhn's The Structure of Scientific Revolutions in 1962 led to an exciting discussion of revolutions in the natural sciences. A fascinating, but little known, off-shoot of this was a debate which began in the United States in the mid-1970's as to whether the concept of revolution could be applied to mathematics as well as science. Michael Grove declared that revolutions never occur in mathematics, while Joseph Dauben argued that there have been mathematical revolutions and gave some examples. This book is the first comprehensive examination of the question. It reprints the original papers of Grove, Dauben, and Mehrtens, together with additional chapters giving their current views. To this are added new contributions from nine further experts in the history of mathematics, who each discuss an important episode and consider whether it was a revolution. The whole question of mathematical revolutions is thus examined comprehensively and from a variety of perspectives. This thought-provoking volume will interest mathematicians, philosophers, and historians alike. Small bump to bottom corner, otherwise clean, very good.

Berkeley's Philosophy of Mathematics (Science and Its Conceptual Foundations Series) by: Jesseph, Douglas M.

Berkeley's Philosophy of Mathematics (Science and Its Conceptual Foundations Series)
by: Jesseph, Douglas M.

Softcover. Chicago, University of Chicago Press, 1st pbk., 1993, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 322 pages, b&w illustrations. In this first modern, critical assessment of the place of mathematics in Berkeley's philosophy and Berkeley's place in the history of mathematics, Douglas M. Jesseph provides a bold reinterpretation of Berkeley's work. Jesseph challenges the prevailing view that Berkeley's mathematical writings are peripheral to his philosophy and argues that mathematics is in fact central to his thought, developing out of his critique of abstraction. Jesseph's argument situates Berkeley's ideas within the larger historical and intellectual context of the Scientific Revolution.

Ontogeny and Phylogenyby: Stephen Jay Gould

Ontogeny and Phylogeny
by: Stephen Jay Gould

Softcover. Cambridge MA, Harvard University Press, reprint, 1977, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 501 pages, b&w illustrations. "Ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny" was Haeckel's answer-the wrong one-to the most vexing question of nineteenth-century biology: what is the relationship between individual development (ontogeny) and the evolution of species and lineages (phylogeny)? In this, the first major book on the subject in fifty years, Stephen Jay Gould documents the history of the idea of recapitulation from its first appearance among the pre-Socratics to its fall in the early twentieth century. Clean copy.
