Hardcover. New York, HarperCollins, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. SIGNED by RASCHKA. Raschka's and Radunsky's simpatico styles are at long last paired in this "doggy allegory" told in a hip-hop beat. Born into a litter of 16, the scruffy protagonist is the pup not chosen--the "saddest and the baddest." His solitude, however, facilitates his sensitivity to the sounds that permeate his urban environment, and while the "clatter makes him gladder," ultimately it's the strains of opera that motivate him to "bark it like Brunhilda." Raschka's musicality undergirds his street-savvy lingo, making the narrative fresh and lyrical. The font becomes bigger and bolder to indicate emphasis, a technique that is particularly helpful when the text spirals around the pages. "I'm the zoom-est and the boom-est, spread no gloom-est, say no doom-est. I'm the top-est, never stop-est, Boston Pop-est, be be bop-est. I jazzle dazzle like it as the Hip Hop Dog." Radunsky's caricatures of the moves of a canine version of Snoop Dogg manage to be convincing, poignant, and funny--no small feat. Loose lines, brushwork that allows the textured background to show through, and occasional bits of collage combine to create a gritty cityscape peopled with quirky personalities. This story of a neglected orphan who sings and struts his way to happiness will gladden the hearts of readers young and old.

Hardcover. NY, Viking , 1st, 1991, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. Max Stravinsky, the poet dog hero of Max Makes a Million , realizes his dream of going to Paris in Kalman's latest high-spirited high jinks. In the City of Light he goes to museums and clubs, meets like-minded suffering artists and falls in love with Crepes Suzette, "that divine dalmatian." Visual and literary jokes abound--a Parisienne wears strategically placed bananas a la Josephine Baker; a hunchback crouches atop Notre Dame; a man's hat is marked "this is not a hat"--while lighthearted digressions offer amusing first lessons in art appreciation. The exuberant text imports French words and other vocabulary that rely heavily on context but convey a rousing musicality ("I am Fritz from the Ritz / which I quit in a snit / when the chef in a fit / threw escargot on my chapeau / and hit my head / with a stale French bread")--sophisticated fare indeed, but children and the uninitiated alike will find plenty of amusement nonetheless. Painstaking design integrates text and pictures, turns type upside-down or sideways, shrinks or expands type size--whimsical touches in perfect keeping with this fluid work. Clean copy.

Hardcover. NY, Dover Publications, reprint, 2018, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 48 pages illustrated in color by Gorey. A new approach to the ancient fables of Aesop features charming rhymes and winsome images by a beloved illustrator. Artist Edward Gorey sets the scenes for poet Ennis Rees's modern interpretation of Aesop's verses, which recount how animals with all-too-human failings receive their just desserts. Memorable renderings of familiar and lesser-known vignettes include the fable of the industrious ant, who prepares for the hardships of the coming winter, and the feckless grasshopper, whose laziness proves fatal. A mighty lion is amused at the notion of a tiny mouse coming to his rescue, a naive young crustacean admires the bright red shell of a boiled lobster, and a swarm of flies are undone by their attraction to a pool of spilled honey. These and other timeless tales provide humorous insights into the folly of greed and vanity and the rewards of virtuous behavior. Originally published in 1971 by Young Scott.

Hardcover. NY, Scholastic Press, 1st, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, color art by Jon Muth. Here is the rare book that not only expresses a parent's love for their child, but offers a hope for what that love will become. It begins with a wish at bedtime, as parents hold their children tight and hope their love will cradle them, safe and sound. It continues through the day their children have grown up, proud and strong, and can pass that love on to someone else. This is a book that goes beyond a parent's "I love you" to the generous wish that our children will make the world a better place. A gentle, poetic text is illustrated in soft gouache-and-watercolor washes that depict scenes in the life of a boy from infancy, when his mother and father hold him close, to adulthood, when he is a parent himself. Clean copy.
Hardcover. NY, Atheneum/Richard Jackson Books, 1st, 2013, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 64 pages. Floca proves himself masterful with this Caldecott Medal winner. The book's large format offers space for a robust story in a hefty package of information. Set in well-paced blank verse, the text begins with a quick sketch of "how this road was built" and moves abruptly to the passengers on the platform and the approaching train. The author smoothly integrates descriptions of the structure and mechanics of the locomotive, tasks of crew members, passing landscapes, and experiences of passengers. Simply sketched people and backgrounds, striking views of the locomotive, and broad scenes of unpopulated terrain are framed in small vignettes or sweep across the page. Though a bit technical in explaining engine parts, the travelogue scheme will read aloud nicely and also offers absorbing details for leisurely personal reading. Substantial introductory and concluding sections serve older readers. There's also a detailed explanation of the author's efforts and sources in exploring his subject. Train buffs and history fans of many ages will find much to savor in this gorgeously rendered and intelligent effort. True First Printing minus the stickers.

Hardcover. NY, Greenwillow, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 40 pages, color illustrations by Paul Zelinsky. SIGNED BY BOTH AUTHOR AND ILLUSTRATOR. The huge but rather childlike character featured in Prelutsky and Zelinsky's Awful Ogre's Awful Day (2001) returns in a new volume of light verse accomplanied by full-page and double-page illustrations. Taking place during the one-eyed ogre's summer vacation, the first-person poems run the gamut from somewhat gross ("Awful Ogre Has Insomnia") to droll ("Awful Ogre Attends a Concert") to tenderhearted ("Awful Ogre Pays a Visit") to sublime ("Awful Ogre Goes Dragon-Watching"). Prelutsky shows his sure sense of rhythm and rhyme as well as his child-pleasing sense of humor in this series of 17 clearly written poems. Most appear on double-page spreads, accompanied by large ink-and-watercolor illustrations that reflect the tone of the verse. Highlighting the barely controlled chaos of this amiable ogre's world, the pictures create a visually imaginative setting where anything can happen and, in the fun-to-discover details, something often does.
