Locke's Travels In France 1675-1679: As Related In His Journals, Correspondence And Other Papers
by: Lough, John

Hardcover. Cambridge UK, Cambridge University Press, 1st, 1953, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Good, Hardcover in a worn dust jacket with a chunk gone from rear panel, 309 pages. This book gives a complete account of all that Locke saw, did and heard during his four years in France. The entries vary from laconic jottings to detailed accounts - full of colour and wit - of life in Paris and the provinces. Locke's variety of interests presents a vivid and thorough account of France at that time. He observed and recorded the absolutism of Louis XIV and the poverty of the peasants, the growing persecution of the Protestants and the external manifestations of Catholicism, recent developments in science and technology - even agricultural methods and the system of taxes. So that this is a book for the general reader as well as for the student of Locke, the social historian and the historian of science. Three b&w plates including a map of his travels. Look Away Dixielandby: Twitchell, James B.

Look Away Dixieland
by: Twitchell, James B.

Hardcover. Baton Rouge, Louisiana State University Press, 1st, 2011, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 175 pages, b&w illustrations. Vermont-native Twitchell sets out from his current home in Florida on the inauguration day of America's first black president to find the "real" South and to try to understand the truth about his illustrious ancestor. He travels in an RV from Georgia's Okefenokee Swamp across Alabama and Mississippi to Coushatta, Louisiana. As he drives through the heart of Dixie, Twitchell sorts through the prejudices he learned from his northern rearing. In searching for the culture he had held at arm's length for so long, he tours small-town southern life -- in campgrounds, cotton gins, churches, country fairs, and squirrel dog kennels -- and uncovers some fundamental truths along the way. Notably, he discovers that prejudices of race, class, and ideology are not limited by geography. As one man from Georgia mockingly summed up North versus South stereotypes, "Y'all are rude and we're stupid." Unexpectedly, Twitchell also uncovers facts about his great-grandfather and sheds new light on his family's past. An enlightening, humorous, and refreshingly honest search, Look Away, Dixieland reveals some of the differences and similarities that ultimately define us as a nation. Clean copy.

Love Affair: A Venetian Journal
by: Morris, Wright

Hardcover. NY, Harper & Row, 1st, 1972, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, pages. This book celebrates, in words and 44 full-color photographs, the adventure of living in the world's most astonishing city. The author's Venice is at eye level, a labyrinth of impressions, a museum of delights for that vanishing man, the walker. "The mind-boggling gift of Venice," he assures us, "is that it has escaped the tyranny of wheels." Man walks, strolls and dawdles; he does not run for his life. Although only the experience of living in Venice will fully accustom the visitor to a fact so unique, Wright Morris combines words and photographs to recapture the essence of this experience, sharing with the reader impressions of a particular moment in a fabulous place.

Maurizio Galimberti: New York Polaroidby: Giuliana Scim

Maurizio Galimberti: New York Polaroid
by: Giuliana Scim

Hardcover. Damiani, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 260 pages. Italian photographer Maurizio Galimberti works exclusively in Polariod. His mosaics of square, white-bordered frames have captured personalities including Andres Serrano, Wim Wenders, Monica Bellucci and Sting, among many others, piece by piece. When he doesn't scratch designs onto the developing pictures with a stick or even a toothbrush, preemptively disrupting any sense that his work directly reflects the real, he takes hundreds of shots of the same subject and eventually assembles up to 140 in a single finished grid. His patrons have included Conde Nast, Rizzoli and Time, and, in advertising, Cartier, Rolex, Nokia, Fiat and Veuve Cliquot. This personal portfolio of the city of New York is full of clean-edged skyscrapers and bridges, limitless streets, multicolored signs, vivid people and limpid skies. Galimberti's Big Apple is thoroughly deconstructed and reconstructed, and the resulting unreal city corresponds perfectly with the soul of New York.

Mon Afrique: Photographs of Sub-Saharan Africaby: Pascal Maitre and Calixthe Beyala

Mon Afrique: Photographs of Sub-Saharan Africa
by: Pascal Maitre and Calixthe Beyala

Hardcover. NY, Aperture, 1st, 2000, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 176 pages. In a convergence of brilliant color and compelling visual narrative, this new collection of photographs by Pascal Maitre reveals an Africa unfamiliar to most Westerners. He portrays a wide range of experience in sub-Saharan Africa: in Niger's desert, soldiers juggle goats and machine guns; within the forest, a rosary dangles from the chest of a warrior in a Bassorian initiation ceremony. In this startlingly beautiful land, ornamented by the marks of human struggle and worship, contradictions are plentiful. Rich in detail and elegant composition, Maitre's photographs immerse us in an Africa beyond the familiar media depictions. He shows an Africa living with the contradictions of tradition and modernization, of ritual headdresses and plastic flip-flops, of tribal wars and machine guns, of ancestral deities and nonbelievers. A lively preface by Cameroon-born author Calixthe Beyala.
