James Rosenquist: Pop Art, Politics, and History in the 1960s by: Michael Lobel (Author)

James Rosenquist: Pop Art, Politics, and History in the 1960s
by: Michael Lobel (Author)

Hardcover. Berkeley CA, University of California Press, 1st, 2009, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 232 pages. James Rosenquist's paintings, with their billboard-sized images of commercial subjects, are utterly emblematic of 1960s Pop Art. Their provocative imagery also touches on some of the major political and historical events of that turbulent decade--from the Kennedy assassination to the war in Vietnam. In the first full-length scholarly examination of Rosenquist's art from that period, Michael Lobel weaves together close visual analysis, a wealth of archival research, and a consideration of the social and historical contexts in which these paintings were produced to offer bold new readings of a body of work that helped redefine art in the 1960s. Bringing together a range of approaches, James Rosenquist provides a compelling perspective on the artist and on the burgeoning consumer culture of postwar America.

Jean-Michel Basquiat: Crossroadsby: Lee Jaffe, Franklin Sirmans, et al.

Jean-Michel Basquiat: Crossroads
by: Lee Jaffe, Franklin Sirmans, et al.

Hardcover. NY, Rizzoli, 1st, 2022, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, still in publisher's shrinkwrap. A rare and poignant compilation of photography and written anecdotes by American photographer and artist Lee Jaffe that captures his close friendship, collaboration, and travels with the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat as they traversed Japan, Thailand, and Switzerland in 1983. Lee Jaffe, a cross-disciplinary visual artist, musician, and poet, took photos of his friend, Jean-Michel Basquiat, when they traveled abroad in 1983. As a photographer, Jaffe had a connection to Basquiat, and their time spent together resulted in an archive of imagery that captured one of the art world's true legends through an unfiltered and authentic lens. Basquiat and Jaffe connected over reggae music at a mutual friend's art show. It was the early 1980s in New York, when the art scene was raw, complicated, and thriving, and Jaffe cultivated strong connections with cultural figures such as Basquiat, Bob Marley, and Peter Tosh. "For me, watching him [ Jean] paint reminded me of the times I would sit and play harmonica while Bob Marley, with his acoustic guitar, would be writing songs that were eventually to become classics," Jaffe says. "With Jean and Bob, it seemed like they were channeling inspiration coming from an otherworldly place." This beautiful volume presents snapshots of Basquiat: from the artist smiling on a bullet train to Kyoto and behind-the-scenes documentation of Basquiat creating artwork in St. Moritz, to poignant portraits that mirror his undeniable magnetism. These rare depictions of Basquiat come to life with Jaffe's unforgettable experiences of their friendship, collaborations, and travels detailed in private written memories and anecdotes. This insightful and moving illustrated volume captures the soul of the unedited, ambitious, young artist during the height of his short yet unprecedented artistic career.

John Evans: Collages
by: John Evans and Robert M. Murdock

Hardcover. NY, Quantuck Lane, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 384 pages. Every day, beginning in 1964, painter John Evans created a collage from found objects ranging from clippings, business cards, product stickers or labels, and ticket stubs to bits of ephemera or anonymous snapshots found on the streets of his East Village neighborhood. Using colored inks, he built upon and embellished the collage elements, creating lively, vibrant compositions. His astonishing work continued through the end of 2000, which seemed an appropriate date to stop. Apart from their beauty, Evans collages are mini-time capsules that mark the end of the Vietnam war, the fiscal crisis in New York City during the 1970's, the burgeoning economy, club scene and are market of the 1980's, and the AIDS crisis. They are also autobiographical with postcards, snapshots, and other connections to Evan's daily life. The 365 collages selected for this monograph, focusing on the 1970s through the 1990's, represent a year, but are drawn from different years. They illustrate the full range of Evans' mastery of his medium and attest to the artist's self discipline in adhering to the demanding regimen of creating a college every day. 365 color plates.

Julian Opie: Recent Worksby: Timothy Clark (Author), Sandy Nairne (Author), Peter Noever (Editor)

Julian Opie: Recent Works
by: Timothy Clark (Author), Sandy Nairne (Author), Peter Noever (Editor)

Hardcover. Hatje Cantz, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 160 pages. Known for his cool, clean, comics-inspired pictorial language, Julian Opie has been one of the leading figures in contemporary British art since the early 1980s. Equally at home in museum settings--like Tate Modern, the ICA Boston and MCA Chicago, where he has mounted recent one-person exhibitions and projects--and in collaboration with mainstream rock bands like Blur and U2, his work crosses media and genres with quiet, computer-assisted abandon. In the early days, Opie transgressed the boundaries between painting and sculpture by applying paint to the everyday articles he used in his steel objects. More recently he has experimented with digital technologies in the applied arts. Now, he is probably best-known for his hypnotically low-tech moving images generated by LCD and LED technologies. This volume assembles a representative collection of portraits, half-length figures and new works that draw from the motifs of baroque portraiture.

Keith Haring
by: Jeffrey Deitch, Julia Gruen, et al.

Hardcover. NY, Rizzoli, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Illustrated boards, 528 pages. Closely based on Haring's own concept for the monograph he wanted to publish before his untimely death, this volume represents more than a decade of research and contains a wealth of unpublished photographic and written material including drawings, studio photographs, and journal entries. From chalk drawings deep in the New York City subways to murals in Pisa and Berlin; collaborations with William Burroughs and the famous body painting of Grace Jones, this book follows the incredible trajectory of Keith Haring's artistic career: how a young man from a small town in rural Pennsylvania came to revolutionize the art world--and the course of art history--within little more than a decade. An incredibly prolific artist, Keith Haring created countless bold, provocative, endearing, and unforgettable images that continue to inspire artists--and delight children--worldwide. Tracing the arc from his early subway "tags" to his poignant work on social issues as diverse as AIDS, illiteracy and apartheid, this visually stunning book is the definitive work on Keith Haring.

Softcover. Provincetown MA, Cape Cod Museum of Art/Providencetown Museum, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 59 pages, exhibition catalog illustrated in color. Essays by Robert Henry, April Kingsley, Myra Harrison and Claire Sprague. Lillian Orlowsky painter, teacher, curator, critic and mentor (Born 1914 in New York City, died August 7, 2007 in Provincetown) I was fortunate to have taken part in one of the most important periods of art in this century. The 1930's through the 1950's saw a cultural upheaval where diverse concepts in painting went from one extreme to another: from realism to abstraction. In the forefront were the WPA (Works Projects Administration - Art Project) and in some measure the Provincetown Art Association. They promoted cultural awareness of the different pictorial concepts which were the beginning of the changing scene of plastic expression.

Lillian Orlowsky: The Signature Is in the Work
by: Orlowsky/Myrna Harrison & Claire Sprague (Eds.) , Lillian

Softcover. Cape Cod Museum of Art/Providencetown Museum, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 59 pages, exhibition catalog illustrated in color.

London Calling:Bacon, Freud, Kossoff, Andrews, Auerbach, and Kitajby: Crippa, Elena, Lampert, Catherine

London Calling:Bacon, Freud, Kossoff, Andrews, Auerbach, and Kitaj
by: Crippa, Elena, Lampert, Catherine

Hardcover. Loa Angeles, J. Paul Getty Museum, 1st, 2016, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 136 pages. Offering a fresh account of developments that have since characterized postwar British painting, this catalogue focuses on Michael Andrews, Frank Auerbach, Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, R. B. Kitaj, and Leon Kossoff-- artists who worked in close proximity as they were developing new forms of realism. If for many years their efforts seemed to clash with dominant tendencies, reassessment in recent decades has afforded their work a central position in a richer and more complex understanding of postwar British art and culture. Rigorous and gorgeously illustrated, the essays reflect on the parallel yet diverse trajectories of these artists, their friendships and mutual admiration, and the divergence of their practice from the discourse of high modernism. The authors seek to dispel the notion of their work as a uniquely British endeavor by highlighting the artists' international outlook and ongoing dialogue with contemporary European and American painters as well as masters from previous generations.

Lucian Freud On Paperby: Sebastian Smee and Richard Calvocoressi

Lucian Freud On Paper
by: Sebastian Smee and Richard Calvocoressi

Hardcover. NY, Rizzoli, 1st, 2009, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 264 pages. Lucian Freud is widely regarded as one of the greatest living artists, and drawing is fundamental to his development as an artist and to how he sees. Speaking recently about his early years he claimed, "I would have thought I did 200 drawings to every painting in those early days. I very much prided myself on my drawing." Drawing became an important part of Freud's life from the start and a famous sketchbook, The Freud-Schuster Book, has survived dating back to January 1940, when Freud was in Snowdonia with Stephen Spender, as do sketches from Freud's life as a merchant seaman on a cargo vessel in the Atlantic in 1941. His then surreal style lent itself to illustrations and his fascination with animals, birds, and fish was revealed in the famous line drawings he produced for Nicholas Moore's book of poems, The Glass Tower (1944). This volume charts Freud's work on paper, including the etchings, over his entire career. It includes the formative early work, the sketches in preparation for painting his masterpiece, Large Interior W11 (after Watteau) (1983), the sketches of the completed painting in the studio and the astonishing later studies of his mother. The book ends with the etchings of recent years.

Mark Rothko: The Decisive Decade: 1940-1950
by: Bradford R. Collins, David Anfam , et al.

Hardcover. NY, Skira Rizzoli, 1st, 2012, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 176 pages. The first publication dedicated exclusively to Mark Rothko's art during the critical formative period of the 1940s. Examining the development and artistic exploration of one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century, this unprecedented volume presents the works of American artist Mark Rothko from the 1940s, a time when his most essential development as a painter occurred, dramatically and in a very compact space of time. During this period, Rothko moved from expressive figurative and surrealist canvases to more abstract multiform subjects and finally to his signature abstractions--luminous rectangles of color suspended in space. Richly illustrated with works by Rothko and his contemporaries, introduction by Todd Herman and essays by prominent Rothko scholars, this important new book deepens our understanding of Rothko's art during this vital period, and that of the mature works that emerged from it.

Marsden Hartley and the West: The Search for an American Modernism (Georgia O'Keefe Museum)by: Heather Hole and Barbara Buhler Lynes

Marsden Hartley and the West: The Search for an American Modernism (Georgia O'Keefe Museum)
by: Heather Hole and Barbara Buhler Lynes

Hardcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 208 pages, color plates. Considered to be among the greatest early American modernists, the painter Marsden Hartley (1877-1943) traveled the United States and Europe in his search for a distinctive American aesthetic. His stay in New Mexico resulted in an extraordinary series of landscape paintings--created in New Mexico, New York, and Europe between 1918 and 1924--that show an evolution in style and thinking that is important for understanding both Hartley's oeuvre and American modernism in the postwar years. Marsden Hartley and the West examines this pivotal stage of the painter's career, drawing upon his writings and providing illustrations of rarely seen and previously unpublished works. The author considers Hartley's involvement with the Stieglitz circle and its "soil-and-spirit" philosophy, the Taos art colony, New York Dada, and the impact of historical events such as World War I. Within this setting she analyzes the pastels and oil paintings that suggest Hartley's increasingly ambivalent response to the land. Beginning with optimistic, naturalistic views, the New Mexico works grew progressively darker and more tumultuous, increasingly reflecting a sense of loss brought on by war. The paintings become a site where the landscapes of memory, self, and nation merge, while reflecting broader modernist debates about "American-ness" and a usable past.
