Warhol: Headlines
by: Molly Donovan , John J. Curley , et al.

Softcover. Washington DC, National Gallery of Art, 1st, 2011, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 224 pages. Headline-making in every sense, the myriad works of art in which Andy Warhol used or referenced tabloids throughout his career are explored in this book as a coherent body for the first time. Obsessed with contemporary culture, Warhol celebrated the sensational as well as the mundane in every facet of society. His headline works, which were realized in a range of formats--from two-dimensional to time-based media such as film, video, and television--chart in real time the great shift in the technological means employed to deliver the news from the 1950s until the artist's death in 1987. This companion volume to a riveting exhibition brings together more than 80 works, from Warhol's earliest drawings and paintings of newspaper headlines, to his screen-printed canvases, photographs, and electronic media, and concluding with collaborative works he produced with Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Featuring illuminating essays and abundant reproductions of the headline works, as well as source materials and examples of Warhol's private scrapbooks of clippings, this unique and powerful volume demonstrates the rich intersection of mainstream media and fine art.

Wayne Thiebaudby: Baker, Kenneth

Wayne Thiebaud
by: Baker, Kenneth

Hardcover. New York, Rizzoli, 1st, 2015, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover with illustrated dust jacket. 358 pages. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. The most comprehensive and deluxe monograph on Wayne Thiebaud, a celebrated and active American artist, spanning the length of his career, from the mid-1950s to the present. Wayne Thiebaud is one of the world's most popular and respected painters. Born in 1920, he has lived for most of his life in Sacramento, with much of his youth spent in Long Beach; Southern California, in particular Laguna Beach, remains an area of great sentimentality. For this book he has selected the works himself, an act of autobiography in a sense. At age 94, he looked back over his life and his work, rich with breakthroughs in painting and masterful individuality. This deluxe volume, with more than 200 illustrations, covers Thiebaud's career as a painter and draftsman from 1959 to 2014. It features many of the still lifes of pies, cakes, desserts, candies, and other objects--lusciously painted, brightly colored, perfectly composed, and gently comic--for which he is best known. Such works brought national recognition in 1962 with a seminal exhibition at the Allan Stone Gallery in New York, attracting rave reviews and, to the discomfort of the artist himself, leading critics to see him as part of the Pop Art movement. The other artistic genres that he cultivated most avidly since then are landscape and cityscape, with special interests in the Sacramento River valley and San Francisco. New essays by a wide range of writers give a fresh perspective on his life and work.

Wide Awake In Slumberland: Fantasy, Mass Culture And Modernism In The Art Of Winsor McCayby: Roeder, Katherine

Wide Awake In Slumberland: Fantasy, Mass Culture And Modernism In The Art Of Winsor McCay
by: Roeder, Katherine

Hardcover. Jackson MS, University Press of Mississippi, 1st, 2014, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 240 pages. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. Cartoonist Winsor McCay (1869-1934) is rightfully celebrated for the skillful draftmanship and inventive design sense he displayed in the comic strips Little Nemo in Slumberland and Dream of the Rarebit Fiend. McCay crafted narratives of anticipation, abundance, and unfulfilled longing. This book explores McCay's interest in dream imagery in relation to the larger preoccupation with fantasy that dominated the popular culture of early twentieth-century urban America. McCay's role as a pioneer of early comics has been documented; yet, no existing study approaches him and his work from an art historical perspective, giving close readings of individual artworks while situating his output within the larger visual culture and the rise of modernism. From circus posters and vaudeville skits to department store window displays and amusement park rides, McCay found fantastical inspiration in New York City's burgeoning entertainment and retail districts. Wide Awake in Slumberland connects McCay's work to relevant children's literature, advertising, architecture, and motion pictures in order to demonstrate the artist's sophisticated blending and remixing of multiple forms from mass culture. Studying this interconnection in McCay's work and, by extension, the work of other early twentieth-century cartoonists, Roeder traces the web of relationships connecting fantasy, leisure, and consumption. Readings of McCay's drawings and the eighty-one black and white and color illustrations reveal a man who was both a ready participant and an incisive critic of the rising culture of fantasy and consumerism.

Women: Pablo Picasso, Max Beckmann, Willem de Kooningby: Bronfen, Elisabeth

Women: Pablo Picasso, Max Beckmann, Willem de Kooning
by: Bronfen, Elisabeth

Hardcover. US, Hatje Cantz, 1st, 2012, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 348 pages, 169 illustrations. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. The depictions and roles of women in the paintings of Pablo Picasso (1881-1973), Max Beckmann (1884-1950) and Willem de Kooning (1904-1997) typically give rise to conversations and presumptions about machismo and misogyny. Of course, these artists' portrayals of women cannot be dismissed so easily, and in fact all offer highly nuanced explorations of the theme. This publication explores their depictions of women as more than painterly projections of male longing and desire, treating them as reflections of social and political conflicts and upheavals. Contributions from art historians, sociologists and artists approach the figures of women in these bodies of work from a variety of perspectives: for Picasso, as a catalyst for a confrontation with the artist's own life and history; for Beckmann, as completely independent themes; and for de Kooning, as the force that makes artistic expression itself possible.
