When Ann Jackman was fourteen and her brother Philip eleven, their father decided to become a fur trapper, so the whole family moved to northern Ontario, near a Hudson Bay Post, and built themselves a home. There were many exciting new things for the Jackmans to learn: building a log cabin, making furniture, paddling canoes, the habits of animals, and the language and customs of the Indians.

It all starts in God's workshop where he fashions shapes out of clay and breathes life into them. What is interesting is that Hughes gives the animals free will to choose themselves - both in terms of what they will eat, how they will live, what they will do and what their name will be.

This novel set in the late nineteenth century provides heartwarming tales of faith and love. Gossip, family failures, and errors in judgment threaten the lives of Ralph Bramlett and Estelle Douglass, but hope is found in the darkest of times. Born in 1841, her first book, Helen Lester, was published in 1865. With that success, Isabella became a tireless writer of books and short stories that explained God's plan for salvation and reinforced Christian values. A talented writer, her inventive plots and wonderful dialog were featured in over 100 books, many of which were translated into different languages and sold around the world.

Follows the popular The Half Deck, which he wrote in 1933. The Monarch, under Capt. McFarlane, leaves the Firth of Clyde for Africa, the Barbadoes, New Orleans, and back. War is declared while in Africa, and the ship tries to outrun a submarine. Small name on front fly leaf otherwise a clean, tight copy.

NY, Burt/Blue Ribbon Books, reprint, circa 1930, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Fair, Hardcover, light green cloth with gilt & black decorated cover and spine labels. 258 pages. Four color plates by Charles Folkard, many b&w text drawings (not credited). Dust jacket chipped and worn. states translation by May M. Sweet, but title page gives M. A. Murray as translator. The mischievous adventures of an animated marionette named Pinocchio and his father, a poor woodcarver named Geppetto. It is considered a canonical piece of children's literature and has inspired hundreds of new editions, stage plays, merchandising and movies, such as Walt Disney's iconic animated version and commonplace ideas such as a liar's long nose.
