Texas family as big and brash as their home state, the Renshaws are united by their fierce loyalty to one another and their ruthlessness in destroying anyone who threatens their interests. When the Renshaw matriarch, Edwina, takes to her deathbed, her ten children are summoned home to stand vigil. Past humiliations and long-simmering resentments soon boil to the surface--a son's forbidden love affair destroyed by his imperious mother, a daughter's dutiful attentions greeted with nothing but disdain. But the most painful wound of all is the absence of Kyle, Edwina's favorite son and the only member of the family to leave Texas. What drove him away, and can his siblings get him home in time to see his mother before she dies? As the ties that bind the indomitable Renshaws stretch and fray, Proud Flesh builds to a stunning climax of passion and violence. It is an unforgettable story, and one of William Humphrey's finest.

Hardcover. NY, Viking, 1st, 1987, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. Imagine an American city in the near future, populated almost wholly by street dwellers, squatters in ruined buildings, scavengers for subsistence. Suicide clubs offer interesting ways to die, for a fee, but the rich have fled with their jewels, and those who are left survive on what little cash trade-in centers will give them for the day's pickings. This enthralling, dreamlike fable about a peculiarly recognizable society, now in the throes of entropy, focuses on the plight of a young woman, Anna Blume. Anna has memories of a gentler life, but comes to the city in a "charity ship" to hunt for her missing brother. She first finds shelter with a madman and his wife and later experiences a brief idyll with a writer, Samuel Farr.Together they live in the deteriorating splendor of the marbled public library. Promise is ultimately rekindled when the survivors consider taking to the road as magiciansan action implying that art and illusion can save. Auster, an accomplished stylist, creates a tone that deftly combines matter-of-factness and estrangement. The eerie quality is heightened by the device of a narrator who learns everything from Anna's journal. Light scratches to rear of dj. Otherwise a clean copy.

Hardcover. London, Picador, 1st UK, 1992, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. Ever After is a rumination on death, faith, and finding meaning in life more than a proper novel. The narrator, Bill Unwin, is recovering from a failed suicide. His convalescence is used to muse over the fate of the father he never knew, and who may not even have been his father, and the ravings of his hedonistic mother over the vanity of posterity. Meanwhile, he is withholding the manuscript of one of his Victorian ancestors from a fellow Cambridge don, a vain, publicity-seeking but successful rival. This is finally the motive for a second, parallel plot, in many ways the more interesting, about the Victorian in forebear in question, Matthew Pearce. For Pearce, surveyor, amateur fossil-collector, and son-in-law to the local parson, is a man of his age, scientifically inclined yet religious. Lyell, Darwin cannot fail to attract Pearce, yet they also threaten his marriage and family, his very social standing. Clean copy.

The Fleuri ranch on Colorado's Croom Mountain resembles a scene from the 1880s, save for a few modern conveniences such as a tractor, a refrigerator, and a water pump. Life for the Fleuris, who supplement their meager income with moonshine and illegal game, hasn't changed much either. When a government agent persuades them to turn the ranch into a model 1880s homestead for paying visitors, it seems a perfect solution to their plight, until the deed is done. Greenberg deals realistically with the impact of government regulation, social and cultural change, and affluence on a backwoods family, while treating family members with the tenderness, humor, and dignity that each so richly deserves.
