After two refusals to have her study at the Harvard Medical School, she received a private medical education and practiced with an emphasis on prevention of disease. She was a dedicated advocate for women as professionals and as an educated populace. A very early advocate for changes to voting rights and property rights for women. Each year when she paid her taxes, in fact, she issued a "taxation without representation" protest.
