While working for the Atlanta Constitution in 1876, Harris "invented Uncle Remus" He published Uncle Remus pieces regularly in the Constitution, and they were extremely popular. In 1880 he collected them into his first book. Remus was a composite of three elderly slaves he had known, the stories themselves were his retellings of old African American tales. He rigorously researched his material, often collecting several versions of the same story until he felt he had the most authentic one. Hinges cracked, but generally a bright, clean copy of this title.
