They date from her return to New York from Paris in 1929, where she had worked as Man Ray's assistant, created an archive of Atget's work, and developed her own career as a photographer. The images here range from her earliest photographs in New York City, the American south, lumberjacks in California's High Sierra Mountains, and the sophisticated bohemia of Greenwich Village.
