A Shakespearean Theater
by: Jacqueline Morley/ John James (Illust.)

Hardcover. Columbus OH, Peter Bedrick, 1st US, 2003, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 48 pages, glossy pictorial boards. Gorgeous, full-color panoramas of ancient landmarks are magnified with inset illustrations revealing fascinating details. A thumbnail history of the English theater, from its ancient and medieval predecessors to its suppression by the Puritans. Using the familiar one-topic-per-spread format, this tracks theater's checkered history as it slowly developed from a religious teaching tool to secular entertainment. Morley mixes fictional and historical characters to portray a player's often hand-to-mouth life. She focuses on Shakespeare's period in particular, describing the structure of a typical theater company, the major London stages of the time, what it was like to put on and to attend a play (specifically A Midsummer Night's Dream, though other plays and playwrights get mentions), and the Globe's phoenix-like career. A Ship Without A Sail: The Life of Lorenz Hart
by: Gary Marmorstein

Hardcover. NY, Simon & Schuster, 1st, 2012, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 531 pages, b&w illustrations. Larry Hart and Richard Rodgers wrote approximately thirty Broadway musicals and dozens of songs for Hollywood films. At least four of their musicals--On Your Toes, Babes in Arms, The Boys from Syracuse, and Pal Joey-- have become classics. But despite their prodigious collaboration, Rodgers and Hart were an odd couple. Rodgers was precise, punctual, heterosexual, handsome, and eager to be accepted by Society. Hart was barely five feet tall, alcoholic, homosexual, and more comfortable in a bar or restaurant than anywhere else. Terrified of solitude, he invariably threw the party and picked up the check. His lyrics are all the more remarkable considering that he never sustained a romantic relationship, living his entire life with his mother, who died only months before he died at age forty-eight. Remainder mark to top edge otherwise clean.

Against Method
by: Paul Feyerabend

Softcover. London, Verso, 3rd Ed., 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 279 pages. Paul Feyerabend's globally acclaimed work, which sparked and continues to stimulate fierce debate, examines the deficiencies of many widespread ideas about scientific progress and the nature of knowledge. Feyerabend argues that scientific advances can only be understood in a historical context. He looks at the way the philosophy of science has consistently overemphasized practice over method, and considers the possibility that anarchism could replace rationalism in the theory of knowledge. The third edition of this classic text contains a new preface and additional reflections at various points in which the author takes account both of recent debates on science and on the impact of scientific products and practices on the human community. At the Edge of the Precipice: Henry Clay and the Compromise That Saved the Union
by: Robert V. Remini

Hardcover. NY, Basic Books, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 184 pages. In 1850, America hovered on the brink of disunion. Tensions between slave-holders and abolitionists mounted, as the debate over slavery grew rancorous. An influx of new territory prompted Northern politicians to demand that new states remain free; in response, Southerners baldly threatened to secede from the Union. Only Henry Clay could keep the nation together. At the Edge of the Precipice is historian Robert V. Remini's fascinating recounting of the Compromise of 1850, a titanic act of political will that only a skillful statesman like Clay could broker. Although the Compromise would collapse ten years later, plunging the nation into civil war, Clay's victory in 1850 ultimately saved the Union by giving the North an extra decade to industrialize and prepare. Back There Where the Past Was: A Small-Town Boyhood
by: Ray Bradbury (Foreword), Charles Champlin (Author)

Softcover. Syracuse NY, Syracuse University Press , 1st pbk, 1999, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 215 pages, b&w illustrations. For Charles Champlin, formerly a writer-correspondent for Time and Life magazines and columnist for the Los Angeles Times, his "other time" was the nineteen-thirties. His "other place," where he was born and spent his boyhood and early adolescence, was the lovely Finger Lakes village of Hammondsport in western New York State. Its population was, and is, 1,200, and it was a fine place to grow up: Keuka Lake to swim in, band concerts in the park on Saturday nights, wagonloads of grapes rumbling through town to the wineries, which continue to make fine champagnes and wines. Glenn Hammond Curtiss manufactured airplanes there in the early years of the century, and in the thirties you could watch planes practice looping the loop on summer afternoons. Clean copy.

Blacksad: Somewhere within the Shadows
by: Juan Diaz Canales and Juanjo Guarnido (Illust.)

Softcover. NY, ibooks, 1st US, 2003, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 56 pages. The story of a private detective seeking revenge for the death of his assassinated ex-girlfriend. A stunning thriller, enhanced by a wonderfully detailed drawing style, with characters in the form of the animals that best reflect the nuances of their personalities. Rendered in a film noir style, the stories are set in late 1950s United States. The strip attempts to reflect a dirty, realist outlook and a dark cinematic style through fairly clean, realistic lines. Detailed watercolor drawings, including real-life places and cities, also contribute to the realistic feel of the series, despite the fact that characters are animals. Bob Dylan In America
by: Sean Wilentz

Hardcover. NY, Doubleday, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 390 pages, b&w illustrations. Growing up in Greenwich Village, Sean Wilentz discov-ered the music of Bob Dylan as a young teenager; almost half a century later, he revisits Dylan's work with the skills of an eminent American historian as well as the passion of a fan. Drawn in part from Wilentz's essays as "historian in residence" of Dylan's official website, Bob Dylan in America is a unique blend of fact, interpretation, and affinity--a book that, much like its subject, shifts gears and changes shape as the occasion warrants. Beginning with his explosion onto the scene in 1961, this book follows Dylan as he continues to develop a body of musical and literary work unique in our cultural history. Wilentz's approach places Dylan's music in the context of its time, including the early influences of Popular Front ideology and Beat aesthetics, and offers a larger critical appreciation of Dylan as both a song-writer and performer down to the present. Branches to Heaven: The Geniuses of C.S. Lewis
by: James Como

Hardcover. Dallas TX, Spence Publishing Company, 1st, 1998, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a dust jacket with light fading to spine, 224 pages. One of the twentieth century's most widely read writers and its most influential Christian apologist, C.S. Lewis has nevertheless eluded the understanding of the numerous scholars who have approached him only as a religious thinker and man of letters. A new book by a leading Lewis authority explores the full range of his manifold genius and finds for the first time the surprising secret of Lewis's enduring literary and spiritual achievement. It will astonish Lewis's admirers and critics alike to learn that he was far from the settled convert he appeared to be. Yet this very unsettledness, which Lewis himself found alarming, was the source of the appealing tension in his work and of his unrelenting commitment to his apologetic vocation. It was in the service of this vocation that he exercised his overarching rhetorical genius-a dazzling adroitness at suiting word, voice, and argument to a particular purpose-always militant, compelling, and persuasive. As Professor Como explores Lewis's hitherto uncharted inner landscape-the core of both his spiritual insight and his intellectual greatness-there emerges a more complex and integrated figure than we have known before. Cicero Tusculan Disputations (The Loeb Classical Library Series)
by: Marcus Tullius Cicero/J.E. King (transl.)

Hardcover. London/NY, William Heinemann/GP Putnam's, reprint, 1927, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Poor, Hardcover, red cloth with gilt stamping, 578 pages including index. Top edge gilt. Latin text with the English translation on the facing pages. Philosophical dialogues of a grieving statesman. Cicero (Marcus Tullius, 106-43 BC), Roman lawyer, orator, politician, and philosopher, of whom we know more than of any other Roman, lived through the stirring era that saw the rise, dictatorship, and death of Julius Caesar in a tottering republic. In his political speeches especially and in his correspondence we see the excitement, tension and intrigue of politics and the part he played in the turmoil of the time. Tusculan Disputations is a series of five books written by Cicero, around 45 BC,[1] attempting to popularize Greek philosophy in ancient Rome, including Stoicism.[2] It is so called as it was reportedly written at his villa in Tusculum. His daughter had recently died and in mourning Cicero devoted himself to philosophical studies. The Tusculan Disputations consist of five books, each on a particular theme: On the contempt of death; On pain; On grief; On emotional disturbances; and whether Virtue alone is sufficient for a happy life. Hardcover. Boston, L.C. Page and Co., reprint, 1904, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, maroon cloth with spine label, top edge gilt. A volume from Disraeli's collected works, a reprint of the 1844 edition. Two b&w illustrations by Byam Shaw. The first of a trilogy of novels (together with Sybil and Tancred) which marked a departure from Disraeli's silver-fork novels of the 1830s and which are his most famous. The book is set against a background of the real political events of the 1830s in England that followed the enactment of the Reform Bill of 1832. In describing these events Disraeli sets out his own beliefs including his opposition to Robert Peel, his dislikes of both the British Whig Party and the ideals of Utilitarianism, and the need for social justice in a newly industrialized society. He portrays the self-serving politician in the character of Rigby (based on John Wilson Croker) and the malicious party insiders in the characters of Taper and Tadpole.
