The Holder Of The World
by: Bharati Mukherjee

Hardcover. NY, Alfred A Knopf, 1st, 1995, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. The tale of a 17th-Century American girl who ends up an emperor's mistress in India. Hannah Easton, born in 1670 in the forests of Massachusetts, at age 15 moves to Salem with adoptive parents after her father dies of a bee sting and her mother - during the French and Indian War-runs off with a lover from the Nipmuc tribe. Having witnessed scalpings and worse, and harboring the terrible secret of her mother's having gone over to the ``barbarians,'' Hannah is a deeper well than most young girls, suffering trance-like illnesses but also excelling at needlework - including the surgical variety, learned in the war. Her oddnesses, though, are no impediment to marriage with the dashing adventurer Gabriel Legge, who takes her first to England, then to India, where Gabriel joins the East India Company before going independent as a pirate - a calling that will bring him fame and wealth, but also, at last, death. Clean copy.

The Sword in the Tree
by: Clyde Robert Bulla/Paul Galdone

Hardcover. NY, Thomas Y. Crowell, reprint, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Good, Hardcover in a lightly worn and chipped dust jacket, 114 pages. Illustrated with b&w drawings by Paul Galdone. In the days of King Arthur there stood a mighty oak tree within the walls of a castle. Peace reigned in the castle until the fearsome night when Lionel, longlost brother of Lord Weldon, returned to cause trouble and unhappiness. It was then that Shan, the son of Lord Weldon, took on the duties of a knight and hid the sword in the hollow of the giant oak. The days that followed were filled with adventures that tried the courage of the young boy. Shan was surprised by bearded robbers in the woods. He met noble knights in plumed helmets, and eventually he even made a trip to high-towered Camelot. His story is filled with the pageantry and color of England in King Arthur's time. It creates a vivid picture of the Knights of the Round Table and the wisdom of King Arthur himself.

Mischievousness, then, is the delicate and all-important ingredient in this account of some fashionables of Mayfair." A collection of interconnected short stories (a few with fantasy/horror elements), it was published in England in 1923, a year before Arlen's sensational best-seller "The Green Hat," which vaulted him to international fame and fortune.
