When Ann Jackman was fourteen and her brother Philip eleven, their father decided to become a fur trapper, so the whole family moved to northern Ontario, near a Hudson Bay Post, and built themselves a home. There were many exciting new things for the Jackmans to learn: building a log cabin, making furniture, paddling canoes, the habits of animals, and the language and customs of the Indians.
