During 5-6 years of continuous residence he learned that the Eskimos resemble an uninstructed peasantry with a large measure of native intelligence lying fallow, lacking opportunities of instruction and development, "the Eskimos are honest and intelligent but have a higher percentage of unfounded beliefs than any white people with whom I have associated."
