Design writer Siegel takes us on a inspiring tour of the history, stylistic concerns and uses of tiles. Though their cool, hard surface might seem best suited to Mediterranean climates, tiles have enjoyed wide use as far afield as the Netherlands, and any area subject to heavy foot-traffic could benefit from their easily cleaned faces. Lavishly illustrated with color photographs supplied by Country Floors, a well-known tile importing company, the book emphasizes the traditional "country" look; a brief, less successful foray into modern styles relies heavily on simple geometric patterns. In his introduction, Country Floors owner Norman Karlson tells how his fascination with tiles developed. Seemingly meant as a sourcebook for designers and tile enthusiasts, the volume offers scant information on the proper application of tiles--only instructions for care and maintenance. Installation, it is hinted, should be left to a specialist.

Dust jacket edgewear, otherwise in good shape. Everett Shinn (1876 - 1953) was an American realist painter and member of the Ashcan School. He also exhibited with the short-lived group known as "The Eight," who protested the restrictive exhibition policies of the powerful, conservative National Academy of Design. He is best known for his robust paintings of urban life in New York and London, a hallmark of Ashcan art, and for his theater and residential murals and interior-design projects. His style varied considerably over the years, from gritty and realistic to decorative and rococo.

This is the English translation of Verlets' 1963 masterpiece "Les Ebenistes du XVIIIe Siecle Francais". Written by the Chief Curator of decorative arts at the Louvre, this classic text discusses each of the known French cabinet-makers active during the 18th century. This involves over 30 individuals, who were influential in determining the styles of the Regency, through Louis XV & XVI. Sections on each figure or firm with numerous examples of their furniture. Excellent 12 page appendice on maker marks, with thumbnail sketches of individuals and firms, business locations, etc.

Hinge cracked at gutter in one place (second page,--second page), binding remains tight, otherwise. Tanning to pages from age, doesn't affect text or illustrations. Some shadowing on a few pages due to previous owner's pressed flowers (now removed). This beautiful old volume was obviously meant to decorate someone's library, as well as provide some comfort at the beginning of the Twentieth Century.
