Hardcover. New York, Skira Rizzoli, 1st, 2011, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 240 pages. Hardcover with dust jacket. Very clean, unmarked copy still in shrink wrap. Full color, full page photographs throughout. Dust jacket designed to look torn with trash underneath. Tight copy. The work of counterculture artists Tim Noble and Sue Webster, whose art is a complex punk-rock take on modern consumer culture. Enormous neon signs, intricate silhouette portraits constructed of trash heaps, and a work titled Instant Gratification: British artists Tim Noble and Sue Webster thrive on the thrills of illumination, love, language, shadows, garbage, and cash. British Rubbish showcases their work in all its splashy glory. Their art evokes both gaudy Vegas culture and down-and-dirty punk rock: a combination of cynical extravagance and a defiant, rebellious sensibility. Extravagant, irreverent, sometimes coarse, and always sharply clever, British Rubbish is both a paean to and sly denunciation of conspicuous consumption.

Hardcover. US, teNeues, 1st, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 208 pages with dust jacket. Like new in publisher's shrinkwrap. For his third book with teNeues, Bruno Bisang shares a vivid cross-section of his Polaroid archives. Once a simple tool to test lighting, angles, and moods, this format is now a relic of photography's analog age-with its own unique qualities. At the time designed to be disposable, every annotation and misstep captured on Polaroids--a depth lacking in today's digital manipulation--is now a part of cultural and artistic history. Page by page, readers witness the unfolding of Bisang's vision. Featuring such stars as Naomi Campbell and Tyra Banks, this collection may just become a cult classic.
Hardcover. NY, Russell Sage Foundation, 1st, 1994, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 400 pages, b&w illustrations. Little over a century ago, New York and Budapest were both flourishing cities engaging in spectacular modernization. By 1930, New York had emerged as an innovating cosmopolitan metropolis, while Budapest languished under the conditions that would foster fascism. Budapest and New York explores the increasingly divergent trajectories of these once-similar cities through the perspectives of both Hungarian and American experts in the fields of political, cultural, social and art history. Their original essays illuminate key aspects of urban life that most reveal the turn-of-the-century evolution of New York and Budapest: democratic participation, use of public space, neighborhood ethnicity, and culture high and low. What comes across most strikingly in these essays is New York's cultivation of social and political pluralism, a trend not found in Budapest. Nationalist ideology exerted tremendous pressure on Budapest's ethnic groups to assimilate to a single Hungarian language and culture. In contrast, New York's ethnic diversity was transmitted through a mass culture that celebrated ethnicity while muting distinct ethnic traditions, making them accessible to a national audience. Mild fade to spine of dust jacket, otherwise clean.

Hardcover. Salt Lake City, Gibbs Smith, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 229 pages, profusely illustrated in b&w. In "Building with Nature: Inspiration for the Arts & Crafts Home" Freudenheim weaves together the lives and philosophies of William Morris, John Ruskin, Frederick Law Olmsted, John Muir, Greene & Greene, Irving Gill, Bernard Maybeck, and others with the dramatic economic, social, design and cultural changes that took place in America between 1876 and 1916. Chronicling both intellectual theory and architectural history, this ground-breaking book will appeal to general readers as well as to those enthusiastic about the Arts and Crafts Movement, its architecture and furniture. Freudenheim demonstrates how the "simple life" manifested in the rustic architecture found in Yosemite, English cottages, Japanese barns, and Swiss chalets, became the basis for the design of the American Arts and Crafts home advocated by these pioneering thinkers. Their devotion to simplicity for both the interior and exterior design of these houses also helps to explain why they embraced plain, sturdy Mission Style furniture. Freudenheim points out how numerous individuals, both American and British, helped spread these ideas across America.

Hardcover. London, Conway, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 96 pages. During World War II, the British government issued a series of public warnings in the form of witty posters by the brilliant cartoonist Fougasse, a.k.a. Cyril Kenneth Bird. ("Don't forget that walls have ears!" a fashionable woman whispers to a friend, as Hitler's face peers ominously out of the wallpaper.) This illustrated tribute to one of Britain's most popular artists begins with his celebrated WWII posters and continues with his later work for Punch magazine and elsewhere. An important contribution to the history of both cartooning and propaganda, it compares the relative effectiveness of hard-hitting American wartime designs versus Fougasse's light touch.

Widely known for his vibrant paintings that employ a variety of styles--including abstraction, figuration, pop, and cartoon--Carroll Dunham (b. 1949) is also one of the most prolific printmakers of his generation. An integral part of his artistic process, Dunham's prints combine the spontaneity and drama of his paintings with the careful premeditation demanded of the medium. His imagery--which shares the wickedly cartoony semi-abstractions of his paintings--is transformed, refined, and often intensified in his graphic work.Carroll Dunham Prints documents the artist's entire print archive--which includes nearly 300 lithographs, etchings, drypoints, linocuts, wood engravings, screenprints, digital prints, and most recently, monotypes--the majority of which have never before been published. The authors examine the significance of printmaking to Dunham's overall oeuvre, his innate sensitivity toward the systematic materials and procedures of printmaking, his inventive approach to this process, and the evolution of his imagery. It also features an insightful essay by Dunham that discusses his journey as a printmaker and his discoveries of the medium.
Softcover. UK, Haynes & Co., 1st, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 160 pages. Glorious tribute to a period of exuberance when record companies seemed obsessed with putting motor cars on the sleeves of their discs. Sometimes the results were high art, sometimes they were the lowest of low-brow kitsch, but above all they were innocent if slightly tacky fun. Color throughout.
Softcover. West Plains MO, Bruce Hershenson , 1st, 1997, Book: Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, pictorial wraps, 96 pages in color. Everyone has their own favorite film genre (animation, action and adventure, science fiction, etc.). Next to crime/film noir films, animation is mine. The beautiful thing about this book is the unexpected. Rather than delve into the standard Disney fare (which is included in great detail nevertheless), this book includes artwork from posters from "lesser seen or only mildly popular" titles. Besides Disney, everything from Fleischer to Avery is represented, works of art that can only be bought for thousands of dollars today at many of America's high echelon auction houses. If you are the least bit interested in the jaw-dropping beauty of what has become a lost art -- the exercise of drawing images associated with the advertising of a Hollywood film -- this is the book to have. NOTE: while a clean, bright copy, the glued binding is poor and several pages are loose.
Hardcover. San Diego, Sunbelt Publications, Revised Ed., 1998, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 246 pages, color photographs and illustrations throughout, illustrated end paper. The Great Murals of Mexico's Baja California are one of the five greatest sites in the world for primitive rock art. They rank with those of southern France, northern Spain, northwest Africa, and outback Australia. These Great Murals, created by an unknown people, are without doubt the most distinctive trove of rock art in the Western Hemisphere. The site was unveiled to the modern world in the 1960s by adventure/mystery writer Erle Stanley Gardner who brought in UCLA archaeologist Clement Meighan to validate the importance of his find. But it was not until the 1970s, when author/photographer Harry W. Crosby undertook a systematic search for the largely unknown works hidden in the mountains of central Baja that the scope and significance of the find became known. He documented his search and discovery of over 200 previously unreported rock art sites leading to the original publication of The Cave Paintings of Baja California by Copley Books in 1975 which first introduced this cave art to the general public. Since that time, Baja California's Great Murals have been designated a United Nations Heritage Site. This lavishly illustrated full-color account is greatly revised and expanded from the original edition and offers Crosby's unique perspective on the painted sites and painting styles found in different parts of the Great Mural area. Light edge wear to dust jacket. Else a very clean, tight copy.
Hardcover. NY, Gallimard, 1st, 2017, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 392 pages. Profusley illustrated, this book explores a hitherto overlooked topic in Chagall studies - the connection between Chagall and music. This intimate relationship, which ran deep in both his family history and the Jewish culture of his native city, was particularly meaningful in Chagall's creations for the stage. His works for the Jewish Theatre (Moscow, 1919-1920) and the ballets 'Aleko' (Mexico, 1942), 'The Firebird' (New York, 1945), 'Daphnis et Chloe' (1958) and 'The Magic Flute' (New York, 1967) celebrate the links he established between music, large-scale set design, and the material design of costumes. Chagall's monumental projects in the 1960s, such as the ceiling of the Paris Opera (1964) and his decorative architectural program for the Metropolitan Opera at Lincoln Center in New York (1966), are a reflection of his notion of 'total art', and his explorations in the universality of music and its translation into the spatial dimension. Music was a constant source of inspiration to Chagall. Clean, bright copy. No dust jacket.
