Karl Blossfeldt: Working Collages
by: Wilde , Ann and Jurgen

Hardcover. Cambridge MA, The MIT Press, 1st, 2001, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 144 pages. Hardcover with dust jacket. Clean, tight copy in publisher's shrinkwrap. Karl Blossfeldt (1865-1932) achieved overnight fame in the late 1920s with the first publication of his photographs of plants. Those photographs, which revealed the inner structures of the organic forms, immediately made him a pioneer of New Objectivity-an innovative movement in art and photography of the 1920s and 1930s. Blossfeldt, however, was neither a trained photographer nor a botanist. He was a sculptor and art professor who did his photographic work to generate teaching material for his students. The publication of this book is the result of an extraordinary event-the 1997 discovery in Blossfeldt's estate of sixty-one previously unknown collages, in virtually mint condition, of photographic contact prints arranged on large cardboard sheets. Blossfeldt apparently used these to study the relation and similarity of the photographs and to compare them graphically and aesthetically. On some, Blossfeldt had made marks or handwritten notations. Others show lines for cropping. The collages, published here for the first time, unveil a hidden treasure of modern photography and cast fresh light on the systematic approach Blossfeldt used in his photographic studies. All collages are reproduced in four colors. Introducing the book is an essay by Swiss art historian Ulrike Meyer-Stump, a Lecturer at the Zurich University of the Arts. Not for sale in France, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, and Austria

Kings in Their Castles: Photographs of Queer Men at Home
by: Tom Atwood and Charles Kaiser

Hardcover. University of Wisconsin Press, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 92 pages. Kings in Their Castles, a collective portrait of the gay urban community in America, offers a personal view of some of our leading artists, writers, filmmakers, composers, musicians, and designers. Among the celebrities Atwood photographs in their playful, revealing homes are Edward Albee, Todd Oldham, John Waters, Ross Bleckner, Joel Schumacher, Junior Vasquez, Michael Cunningham, Simon Doonan, Andrew Solomon, Ned Rorem, James Dale, David Del Tredici, Tommy Tune, John Ashbery, Edmund White, and John Bartlett. Atwood also documents the bohemians, beatniks, mavericks, and iconoclasts, an urban community that is slowly disappearing. Capturing whimsical, intimate moments of daily life and portraying the complexity and diversity of this loosely linked society, Atwood reveals some of the most intriguing characters and homes in gay America. These beautiful fine art prints--shifting between the pictorial and the theatrical--become both a witness and a celebration.

Mary Cassatt: Paintings and Prints
by: Getlein, Frank

Softcover. New York, Abbeville, 1st, 1980, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 154 pages, color illustrations throughout. Very light wear to corners. Else a very clean, tight copy. Mary Cassatt's paintings and prints have long been treasured as some of the finest examples of Impressionist art. A rebel by the Victorian standards of her time, Mary Cassatt moved from the art schools of staid Philadelphia to the boulevards of Paris, where the young Impressionist movement was flourishing. Degas, her friend and mentor, encouraged her involvement in the new art movement. Cassatt's luminous, observant, and innovative works-chiefly interiors with women and children-helped define Impressionism and have been compared to Raphael's paintings for their beauty and dignity. Frank Getlein, noted art critic and historian, has selected 72 of Cassatt's finest works, each reproduced here in full color. His accompanying text relates the intimate details of her life to her paintings while clearly defining her relation to fellow artists and her place in modern art.

Maxfield Parrish (SIGNED COPY)
by: Cutler, Judy Goffman; Cutler, Laurence S.; Parrish, Maxfield

Hardcover. San Diego, Thunder Bay Press, 1st, 2001, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. 144 pages illustrated in color. INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHORS on the half-title page. Maxfield Parrish has long been considered one of the greatest American illustrators of the 20th century. In the early 1920s, when his works Garden of Allah and Daybreak were reproduced as art prints, he quickly became one of the best known artists in America with his art images appearing on posters, calendars, magazine covers, and book illustrations. His unmistakable paintings, characterized by "Parrish Blue" water and skies, luminescent rocks and hills, and exquisite young women in flowing classical robes, are infused with a romantic Eden-like quality so entrancing that reproductions are as enthusiastically received today as the prints were when they first appeared. A wonderful selection of his work with brilliant reproductions. Clean copy.

Maxfield Parrish: A Retrospective
by: Laurence S. Cutler , Judy Goffman Cutler , et al.

Hardcover. San Francisco, Pomegranate, 2nd pr., 1996, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 164 pages. It was estimated in the 1920s that one out of four homes in America had one of Parrish's make-believe illustrations on the wall, and he remains one of our best-loved illustrators. This unique work, a celebration of "Parrish Blue" water and skies, hued hills, and young women draped in classical garments, is the result of a 1995 traveling exhibit, "Maxfield Parrish: A Retrospective." The Cutlers, he an architect and she a gallery owner, were instrumental in working with the Parrish Family Trust to put together that international exhibit to commemorate the artist's 125th birthday. The Cutlers were able to locate numerous items in private collections for the exhibit. Many of the 130 color plates are of these works, never reproduced before, while better-known pieces are lavishly reproduced from the original paintings rather than prints. The Parrish family offered rare photos for the biographical text, which is supplemented with a reminiscence by granddaughter Joanna Maxfield Parrish.
