Book Marks: An Artist's Card Catalog: Notes from the Library of My Mind
by: Page, Barbara

Bauer and Dean, 1st, 2021, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, pictorial boards with black cloth spine. This alluring blend of art book and autobiography will capture the imagination. At its heart are hundreds of captivating 3 x 5-inch artworks? intricate collages and drawings created on old library checkout cards, each one representing a book that left an indelible mark on artist Barbara Page. She began creating these illustrated "book marks" as a colorful way to remember titles she was currently reading. Before long, Page embarked on a decade-long art project recreating her reading history, starting with picture books from early childhood. Every artwork serves as a bookmark for a moment in time connected to a specific title, and, as a collection, they present over seventy years of literature, politics, thought, and culture-as colored by one woman's reading choices. Some images may evoke your own memories of a story. Others may feel like little puzzles that require reading or rereading a title to interpret the artistic references.

Brand-New and Terrific: Alex Katz in the 1950s
by: Diana Tuite , Sharon Corwin, et al.

Hardcover. NY, Prestel, 1st, 2015, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 208 pages, color plates. Celebrating an experimental decade in the career of Alex Katz, this book introduces audiences to a relatively unknown body of his work. Coming of age as an artist in the 1950s, Alex Katz set out to reinvent representational painting in the wake of Abstract Expressionism. At first, Katz struggled to find an audience, destroying hundreds of canvases. This book surveys the artwork that survived from this momentous decade, one in which he first painted outdoors, innovated with collages, and met Ada del Moro, his wife and muse. The essays in this book contextualize Katz's painting, consider how he and his peers looked at one another, mined 19th-century portraiture, and borrowed from television, advertising, and cinema. The result is a fascinating study of a young artist laying the groundwork for an astonishingly successful career. Fans of Katz will be inspired by the radicality of his early work, and those being introduced to the artist will be struck by its freshness and relevance.

Christo and Jeanne-Claude in the Vogel Collection
by: Donovan, Molly

Hardcover. New York, National Gallery of Art/Harry N. Abrams, 1st, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 144 pages. Hardcover with dust jacket. Clean, tight copy with mniior wear to edges. Color photos throughout. Christo and Jeanne-Claude have created some of the most visually breathtaking works of the twentieth century. From early wrapped objects to monumental outdoor projects such as The Umbrellas, Japan-U.S.A., 1984-91 and Wrapped Reichstag, Berlin, 1971-95, the artists have used fabric - wrapped, draped, and folded over, around, and through natural and constructed forms - to transcend the traditional bounds of painting, drawing, sculpture, and architecture. This volume spanning forty years of Christo and Jeanne-Claude's remarkable career accompanies an exhibition at the National Gallery of Art of sixty-one works from the collection of Dorothy and Herbert Voqel, whose relationship with the artists dates to 1971. The wonderful breadth of works presented in color and discussed here includes several early packages, models for large-scale public works, preparatory drawings and collages for projects in urban and rural sites, and photographs of the completed projects.

Create and Be Recognized: Photography on the Edge
by: John Turner and Deborah Klochko

Hardcover. San Francisco, Chronicle Books, 1st, 2004, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 156 pages. Create and Be Recognized is the first survey of a compelling, always surprising art form -- outsider photography. Presented here is the work of seventeen largely self-taught artists who have used photography or photographic elements in their creations, including such luminaries as Adolf Wolfli, Howard Finster, and Henry Darger, as well as discoveries from little known, equally dramatic artists. As with most outsider art, the work here is fuelled by singular passions, marginalized mindsets, and extreme circumstances, falling outside mainstream picture-making. Employing collage (affixing photos or reproductions to a background), photocollage (photographs cut and pasted together to form a new whole), and tableaux (works based on manipulation and staging), the artists here present work that is, by turns, lyrical and frightening, and always fascinating. Published to coincide with a major touring exhibition of the same name originating at San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Create and Be Recognized documents an emerging and important facet of contemporary photography.

David Hockney: Paintings
by: Paul Melia , Ulrich Luckhardt, et al.

Softcover. Munich London NY, Prestel, reprint, 2000, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 200 pages. One of the most widely acclaimed of all living artists, David Hockney has, in some ways, been the victim of his own popularity. Frequently interpreted as the lightweight expression of a colorful personality, his work is in fact characterized by an underlying seriousness of purpose. This emerges with particular clarity from the fresh appraisal of the artist's oeuvre offered in this book. Each of the volume's six chapters, broadly chronological in sequence, is introduced by an essay that examines in depth certain aspects of Hockney's artistic practice. The complexity of his seemingly straightforward imagery is further elucidated in the commentaries accompanying each of the sixty-three carefully selected color plates. These encompass the period from 1960 to 1993, from work produced during the artist's student days at the Royal College of Art in London to his most recent paintings, informed by his experience of designing for the stage and by his experiments with photo-collage and fax art. Included are paintings being illustrated for the first time and others that have rarely been reproduced in colour. Numerous black-and-white illustrations of related works provide important reference material. An illustrated chronology and a selected bibliography conclude this lucid, authoritative account of Hockney's development.

This book, put together by Helen Adkins, renowned expert on the Berlin Dada movement, is the first to provide a study and a survey of these early works. Erwin Blumenfeld: Nothing but a Berliner: Dada Montages 1916-1933
by: Helen Adkins, Erwin Blumenfeld, et al.

Hardcover. Hatje Cantz, 1st, 2009, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 224 pages. Erwin Blumenfeld (1897-1969) was born into a Jewish family in Berlin. In 1941, after being interned in a concentration camp, he left Europe for the United States, where he eventually became a citizen; during the 40s and 50s, he was to make his name here as one of the most sought-after fashion photographers in the world. But most people are unfamiliar with Blumenfeld's early work, the often bitingly satiric Dada photomontages and collages he produced between 1916 and 1933. This book, put together by Helen Adkins, renowned expert on the Berlin Dada movement, is the first to provide a study and a survey of these early works. Blumenfeld did not intend for these works to be shown publicly, as they were primarily personal gifts to his friends and acquaintance, or were enclosed in love letters to his fiancee. Nonetheless, they were conceived in the Dada spirit (Blumenfeld established the Dutch branch of Dada in 1918) and belong to its story. Approximately 100 works--including many previously unpublished, which Adkins discovered in the artist's family archives and in other public and private collections--are examined within the context of Blumenfeld's life, photographs, drawings and literary works.
