Feather Trails: A Journey of Discovery Among Endangered Birds
by: Osborn, Sophie A. H.

Hardcover. White River Junction VT, Chelsea Green Publishing , 1st, 2024, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 367 pages. In Feather Trails, wildlife biologist and birder Sophie A. H. Osborn reveals how the harmful environmental choices we've made--including pesticide use, the introduction of invasive species, lead poisoning, and habitat destruction--have decimated Peregrine Falcons, Hawaiian Crows, and California Condors. In the Rocky Mountains, the cloud forests of Hawaii, and the Grand Canyon, Sophie and her colleagues work day-to-day to try to reintroduce these birds to the wild, even when it seems that the odds are steeply stacked against their survival. With humor and suspense, Feather Trails introduces us to the fascinating behaviors and unique personalities of Sophie's avian charges and shows that what endangers them ultimately threatens all life on our planet. Flying Blind: One Man's Adventures Battling Buckthorn, Making Peace with Authority, and Creating a Home for Endangered Bats (SIGNED COPY)
by: Mitchell, Don

Hardcover. White River Jct VT, Chelsea Green Publishing, 1st, 2013, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. SIGNED BY MITCHELL on title page and INSCRIBED on the front fly leaf. Novelist and shepherd Mitchell presents this account of what happened after a biologist from the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department asked for permission to track bats on his farm. The author having been an iconoclast since his youth, the book is as much a story about a back-to-the-land Vermont farmer coming to collaborate with government as the story of the bats for whose benefit the forested land was managed. This idealist muses on the process of balancing concerns of money, ecology, independence and co-dependence, wrapping up the book with insights learned in convoluted manner about nature, society, and himself.

Helios: Eadweard Muybridge in a Time of Change
by: Philip Brookman , Marta Braun, et al.

Hardcover. Steidl, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 360 pages. In 1878, the Photographic Times claimed that ten minutes provided sufficient exposure for photographing a landscape. Six years earlier, an English immigrant to the West Coast named Eadweard Muybridge, going by the commercial name of Helios, had already pushed photography far in the opposite direction: not to soak up time into pictures, but to divide time with the quickest exposures then imaginable. In 1872, the tycoon Leland Stanford had commissioned Muybridge to photograph his horse, Occident, to determine whether it ever lifted all four hooves off the ground at once. In proving that this was indeed the case, Muybridge achieved a five-hundredth-of-a-second exposure, and so began an anatomy of motion-in humans, horses, birds-that exploded the possibilities of photography and ultimately led to the development of the motion picture. Helios: Eadweard Muybridge in a Time of Change offers an opportunity to trace the life and art of the great photographer. In the wake of a wave of recent scholarship and renewed interest, it pitches his entire body of work against the backdrop of one of the most transformative periods of American and European history. Published to accompany a retrospective exhibition organized by the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Helios features essays by Philip Brookman, Marta Braun, Corey Keller and Rebecca Solnit that provide a variety of new approaches to Muybridge's art and influences.

by: Jerome M. Mileur

Hardcover. Columbia, University of Missouri, 1st, 2009, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. 274 pages, b&w photos. 1942: Americans suddenly found themselves at war but were not about to be distracted from the National Pastime. The Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Yankees were looking to continue their World Series rivalry from the 1941 season, and a youthful team from St. Louis was determined to stop them. With only one player older than thirty, the St. Louis Cardinals were the youngest team to win the National League pennant and World Series. Built on good pitching and tremendous speed on the base paths and in the field, the team featured rookie Stan Musial, future Hall of Famer Enos Slaughter, and ace pitcher Mort Cooper, the National League's Most Valuable Player of 1942. With their winningest season ever, posting 106 victories, the 1942 Redbirds have been called the greatest Cardinal team of all time. Clean copy.

Hornbeam Tree and Other Poems, The
by: Norman/Ted Rand, Chrls

NY, Henry Holt, 1st, 1988, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. Illustrated with color watercolor pictures by Ted Rand. This slim volume includes 19 poems about nature, including 8 about birds, all of which are illustrated with bold, realistic watercolor paintings. The poems describe animal appearance and behavior in natural, clear images that any nature-watcher can understand. The cardinal, for example, ``Tries not to look conspicuous/ In red, but doesn't quite know how,'' and the spaniels have ``Periscope tails and hairy feet.'' Several poems such as ``The Beaver, Alas'' are wry commentaries on human attitudes toward nature. The few poems which try for an arch tone (``Slothful the sloth is certainly noth'') are less successful. Rand's detailed close-up paintings of individual birds and animals and his more humorous montages of animals for poems such as ``At the Zoo'' balance beautifully with the text.

Lucian Freud On Paper
by: Sebastian Smee and Richard Calvocoressi

Hardcover. NY, Rizzoli, 1st, 2009, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 264 pages. Lucian Freud is widely regarded as one of the greatest living artists, and drawing is fundamental to his development as an artist and to how he sees. Speaking recently about his early years he claimed, "I would have thought I did 200 drawings to every painting in those early days. I very much prided myself on my drawing." Drawing became an important part of Freud's life from the start and a famous sketchbook, The Freud-Schuster Book, has survived dating back to January 1940, when Freud was in Snowdonia with Stephen Spender, as do sketches from Freud's life as a merchant seaman on a cargo vessel in the Atlantic in 1941. His then surreal style lent itself to illustrations and his fascination with animals, birds, and fish was revealed in the famous line drawings he produced for Nicholas Moore's book of poems, The Glass Tower (1944). This volume charts Freud's work on paper, including the etchings, over his entire career. It includes the formative early work, the sketches in preparation for painting his masterpiece, Large Interior W11 (after Watteau) (1983), the sketches of the completed painting in the studio and the astonishing later studies of his mother. The book ends with the etchings of recent years.
