Hardcover. Berlin GR, Nicolai Publishing, 1st, 1997, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. GERMAN TEXT. The history of Berlin's grand hotel. The Adlon opened on October 23, 1907, with the Kaiser, his wife, and many other notables in attendance. It quickly became the social center of Berlin. As the rooms in the Stadtschloss were cold and drafty, the Kaiser paid an annual retainer to keep suites available for his guests.[2] Likewise the Foreign Office used the Adlon for accommodation during state visits, with guests including Tsar Nicholas II of Russia and Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala. Notable guests of the early years included industrialists such as Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, and John D. Rockefeller, as well as politicians like Walter Rathenau, Gustav Stresemann and the French prime minister Aristide Briand. Many wealthy Berliners lived for extended periods of time in the hotel, while its ballrooms hosted official government functions and society events. Many photos. Clean copy.
Hardcover. Taschen, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 580 pages. 1940-1949: Destruction and Reconstruction. This volume covers the 1940s, when fascism came to a climax and World War II led to the extensive destruction of Europe. But the second half of this decade was also a time of reconstruction, democratization, and the related search for new social values. Unlike in Nazi Germany, in fascist Italy Modernism was able to advance in architecture and design - as proved impressively by the buildings and designs by Carlo Mollino, Gian Luigi Banfi, Franco Albini, and Giuseppe Terragni that are documented herein. After the war, Organic Design emerged alongside the International style. This edition reflects upon the economic, social, and cultural problems of the time, but also shows how the force of the avant-garde continued to thrive in Italy, Switzerland, Scandinavia and the USA. Reports and features on modern industrial design and furniture, as well as domestic and business interiors stand side by side with articles about novel prefabricated houses. In publisher's shrink wrap. Due to size and weight, DOMESTIC SHIPPING ONLY.
Hardcover. London, Hutchinson, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 318 pages. Hardcover with dust jacket. SIGNED BY ATTENBOROUGH on title page, otherwise clean and tight copy. Pictures throughout. The long awaited autobiography by one of the world's best-loved actors and directors. The story begins in 1983 with a famously weeping Attenborough accepting two Oscars when his film Gandhi broke all previous records to win a total of eight Academy awards. Hawkins, 67, is Attenborough's publicist, confidante, co-producer and long-term business partner.Attenborough reflects on the highs and lows of a long life both in and out of the public gaze. Few know, for instance, that he once risked prison on a matter of conscience or that, as an air-gunner cameraman, he took part in bombing raids over Germany during the war. More poignantly, Attenborough will finally break his silence about his long-running friendship with Princess Diana, and the tsunami tragedy that robbed him of his eldest daughter and granddaughter in December 2004.

Hardcover. NY, HarperCollins, 2nd pr., 1997, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 436 pages. A great historian crowns a lifetime of thought and research by answering a question that has haunted us for more than 50 years: How did one of the most industrially and culturally advanced nations in the world embark on and continue along the path leading to one of the most enormous criminal enterprises in history, the extermination of Europe's Jews? Giving considerable emphasis to a wealth of new archival findings, Saul Friedlander restores the voices of Jews who, after the 1933 Nazi accession to power, were engulfed in an increasingly horrifying reality. We hear from the persecutors themselves: the leaders of the Nazi party, the members of the Protestant and Catholic hierarchies, the university elites, and the heads of the business community. Most telling of all, perhaps, are the testimonies of ordinary German citizens, who in the main acquiesced to increasing waves of dismissals, segregation, humiliation, impoverishment, expulsion, and violence.
