First edition of Dahl's rare first book, with 14 vibrant full-page illustrations by Walt Disney Productions. The author wrote The Gremlins, a children's story expanding on a mythical creature enshrined for years in RAF lore. Disney expressed an interest in making it into an animated film. The author went to California to work on a screenplay that never made it into production. The book was produced from preliminary work done by the Disney artists. A nice copy with light rubbing to covers, mild foxing, no dust jacket.

A much-loved Danish illustrator, a 1972 Andersen medalist, takes up a problem that seems to be world-wide: kids who feel abandoned by their busy parents. Caroline, realistically pictured in the book's first half during a typical lonely day, wakes up next morning to transcribe a dream: the children band together to build a parent trap that's baited with films, videos, and free popcorn--once caught, an adult would ``never run away'' but, rather, be available for companionship and solace. In the end, Caroline's friends admire her story and do help build a playhouse-trap--with the happy implication that some adults may get the point.

The story follows the mice on the adventures they get up to in the night, including a detour to Covent Garden Market and a ride on the top of a double-decker tour bus, before duty calls the Guard Mouse back to his sentry box in front of Buckingham Palace the next morning. He is so taken with it that he doesn't notice the mysterious contraption that floats down from the surface. While the lobster wonders if the contraption is a restaurant and the bluefish thinks it's a trap, the poor flounder gets stuck underneath! When the hungry hermit crab investigates the delicious smells coming from the contraption and frees the flounder, he inadvertently becomes a hero. Clean copy.
