Introduction is dated January, 1913. The author was Dean of the faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University. This volume contains four essays, two each from two of Briggs' earlier works -- School, College, and Character, and Ideals -- focused mainly on students. 124 pages. Clean copy. Laid in is a folded mimeographed sheet: "Message from Dean Briggs of Harvard", date unknown.

This is the story of a 19th century German-American industrialist who made his fortune manufacturing hard rubber combs thanks to his friendship with Charles Goodyear and his invention, vulcanized rubber. Poppenhusen founded a town, College Point, New York, and became a much-loved philanthropist funding churches, libraries and an educational institute that is today both a National and New York City landmark, the Institute that bears his name. He was an innovator in education introducing the first free kindergarten for his workers and the people of the town, perhaps the first corporate day care facility in the U.S. He made the catastrophic mistake of getting involved in the railroads in the late 1860's and used his vast fortune to bring about the consolidation of what has come down to us today as the Long Island Railroad.

Hardcover. Beirut Lebanon, American University of Beirut, 1st, 1994, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a dust jacket with light fading to edges, 315 pages. Daniel Bliss was the first President of the Syrian Protestant College (now The American University of Beirut) which opened it's doors in 1866. In the early 1870s land was purchased to construct new buildings under his supervision. These letters were written by Bliss to his wife who returned to Amherst, Massachusetts for health reasons. Written in 1873-74, his descriptions of mid-nineteenth century Beirut are illuminating, filled with interesting everyday details. Clean copy.

Previous owner's name, otherwise clean. James Adam (1860-1907) was a Scottish classics scholar who taught at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. A strong defender of the importance of Greek philosophy in a well-rounded education, Adam published a number of Plato's works including Protagoras and Crito. This two-volume critical edition of the Republic (1902) was another major contribution to the field. Though his preface claims 'an editor cannot pretend to have exhausted its significance by means of a commentary,' Adam's depth of knowledge and erudite analysis of the Greek text ensured that his edition remained the standard reference for decades to follow, and it remains a thought-provoking evaluation of one of the great works of Western thought.
