The Female Soldier; Or The Surprising Life and Adventures of Hannah Snell (1750 )
by: Snell, Hannah/ Dugaw, Dianne (introduction)

Softcover. Los Angeles, Augustan Reprint Society, reprint, 1989, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, The Augustan Reprint Society Publication Number 257. Facsimile of the 1750 version of the 'conventionalized' story of Hannah Snell, who was a real person (1723-1792). Introduction by Dianne Dugaw. xiii, iv, 42 pages. Heroines such as Hannah Snell actually surface as commonplace, particularly in works catering to the lower classes. In 1750 the London printer Robert Walker, an important early newspaper publisher, presented his readers with two anonymous versions of The Female Soldier, the 46-page unillustrated octavo reproduced here and a more developed 187-page book which included engraved illustrations. Clean, bright copy.

The Photography of Charles Sheeler: American Modernist
by: Sheeler, Charles/Stebbins Jr.,Theodore/Mora, Gilles/ Haas, Karen E.

Hardcover. Boston, Bulfinch Press, 1st, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 224 pages. Essays by leading authorities on the artist's work accompany a stunning collection of nearly two hundred photographs by modernist American photographer Charles Sheeler, offering a landmark retrospective of of the work of the influential master of twentieth-century photography. Sheeler visited Europe in 1929 and an important part of this trip was to photograph Chartres Cathedral, he called it "...one of the outstanding experiences of a lifetime". The book includes thirteen beautiful shots of the Cathedral and they look remarkably like his photos of the Ford Motor Rouge River blast furnaces and other exterior bits of the industrial plant which he took in 1927. After 1929 Sheeler concentrated on his paintings. The photos in the book for this period: 1929 to 1939, include house interiors and several for his Power series. One of these, the wheels of a Hudson steam loco was the basis of his famous super realist 1939 painting 'Rolling Power'. The images in the book are taken from Lane Collection, of the Museum of Fine Art, Boston, who own the Sheeler photographic estate and the book was originally published in conjunction with exhibitions in 2003/4. The 190 photos are printed as tritones with a 250 screen. Clean, bright copy. DOMESTIC SHIPPING ONLY.

The Top of His Game: The Best Sportswriting of W. C. Heinz
by: Heinz, W. C. (Ed. Bill Littlefield)

Hardcover. NY, Library of America, 1st, 2015, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 594 pages. W. C. Heinz (1915-2008) was one of the most distinctive and influential sportswriters of the last century. Though he began his career as a newspaper reporter, Heinz soon moved beyond the confines of the daily column, turning freelance and becoming the first sportwriter to make his living writing for magazines. In doing so he effectively invented the long-form sports story, perfecting a style that paved the way for the New Journalism of the 1960s. His profiles of the top athletes of his day still feel remarkably current, written with a freshness of perception, a gift for characterization, and a finely tuned ear for dialogue. Jimmy Breslin named Heinz's 'Brownsville Bum"a brief life of Al 'Bummy" Davis, Brooklyn street tough and onetime welterweight champion of the world'the greatest magazine sports story I've ever read, bar none." His spare and powerful 1949 column, 'Death of a Race Horse," has been called a literary classic, a work of clarity and precision comparable to Hemingway at his best. Remainder dot to bottom edge otherwise clean.
