The full, fascinating story of this fabled company, written and designed by EC-expert Grant Geissman. Even the most die-hard EC Fan-Addicts will find something new within these pages, with the Gaines family archives providing over 100 rarities that have never seen print. Cover images are reproduced from Gaines file copies. 1,000 illustrations include the rarest and most notorious covers, interior pages and panels, rare photos, vintage original artwork, and some of the most celebrated stories ever to be printed in four colors. Author Grant Geissman was a customer in Bud Plant's San Jose comic book store in 1968-69, long before he became a recording star and EC expert. Grant has written several books on EC and, in my mind, is the foremost authority on both Mad and EC. He generously did a special bookplate for us, which reproduces a "fantasy" cover for Incredible Science Fiction that he commissioned from Angelo Torres. It's in full color and signed by Grant.

With nearly one thousand commissions executed between 1879 and 1912, McKim, Mead & White was the architectural firm of choice of the most prestigious projects of the era, including the redesign of the White House and the Mall in Washington, D.C., and the campuses of Harvard and Columbia Universities. Among its residential clients were many of the most powerful figures of the Gilded Age-Vanderbilts, Whitneys, Pulitzers-for whom the firm built splendid summer cottages in Newport and throughout Long Island and the Hudson valley and sumptuous town houses in Boston, Washington, Baltimore and New York. More than thirty houses are presented here, their exteriors and interiors elegantly recorded in lush new color photographs. An early Himalayan travel book by the first English woman to travel so far into the Eastern Himalaya. She and her British Army chaplain husband traversed the Nepal-Sikkim frontier from Darjeeling to Junnoo Mountain, overcoming many obstacles on the way. Although early, it is regarded as a mountaineering classic. 4to, xvi, 612 pages, chromolithograph frontispiece, large folding map, 9 chromolithographs, engraved vignettes, top edge gilt. Original red pictorial cloth with handsome gilt design on cover and spine, as well as elaborate borders.

This work is Gilpin's photographic love letter to the Pueblos of the southwest. Laura Gilpin (1891-1979) attained international recognition as photographer and her images of the Navajo and Pueblo peoples of the four corners area offer an important record of these cultures. She excelled in a field that up to the point, had largely been the purview of men. Cloth covers with edgewear, light soil. Inscription on inside front cover. Covers fair, interior good+.

Tales and studies of outdoor life, hunting, fishing, living in the wilderness, etc. Profusely illustrated with wonderful engravings by the Harper stable of artists: Shepard, W.A. Rogers, Rinehart, Abbey, others. No date on title page so assumed an early reprint. No markings but the rear cover is badly scuffed, light corner wear to corners. Rear endpapers soiled. The interior of the book is tight and clean.

At the height of the Jazz Age, when Prohibition was turning ordinary citizens into criminals and ordinary criminals into celebrities, America's true crime detective magazines were born. True Detective came first in 1924, and by 1934, when the Great Depression had produced colorful outlaws like Machine Gun Kelly, Bonnie and Clyde, Baby Face Nelson, and John Dillinger, the magazines were so popular cops and robbers alike vied to see themselves on the pages. Even FBI boss J. Edgar Hoover wrote regularly for what came to be called the "Dickbooks," referring to a popular slang term for a detective. As the decades rolled on, the magazines went through a curious metamorphosis, however. When liquor was once more legal, the Depression over and all the flashy criminals dead or imprisoned, the "detectives" turned to sin to make sales. Accompanying text explains the "do"s and "don't"s of living with a large land octopus. The book's art is extremely detailed, and each illustration tells its own visual story. The Victorian era characters and period-influenced design elements combine to create a wonderful, collectible art-object for those who still value the classic elegance of ink-on-paper.
