Data Love: The Seduction and Betrayal of Digital Technologies
by: Roberto Simanowski

Hardcover. NY, Columbia University, 1st, 2016, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 156 pages. Intelligence services, government administrations, businesses, and a growing majority of the population are hooked on the idea that big data can reveal patterns and correlations in everyday life. Initiated by software engineers and carried out through algorithms, the mining of big data has sparked a silent revolution. But algorithmic analysis and data mining are not simply byproducts of media development or the logical consequences of computation. They are the radicalization of the Enlightenment's quest for knowledge and progress. Data Love argues that the "cold civil war" of big data is taking place not among citizens or between the citizen and government but within each of us.

Disney Winnie the Pooh: A Celebration of the Silly Old Bear
by: Finch, Christopher

Hardcover. New York, Disney Editions, Revised Ed., 2011, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 208 pages, illustrated in color. Very good in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. While the literary Pooh continues to win new generations of fans, an on-screen Pooh was destined to expand the appeal of the Hundred-Acre Wood. In 1961, Walt Disney acquired the exclusive film rights to Milne's Pooh stories. Since then, The Walt Disney Company has produced numerous shorts, features, and television shows about the Silly Old Bear, and that tradition continues with the release of the 2011 film, Winnie the Pooh. Winnie the Pooh: A Celebration of the Silly Old Bear is a tribute to the wonder of Pooh, from his origin and literary success to his brilliant animated career and continued popularity. This is his story; but, moreover, it is his art--including more than 200 illustrations that detail the evolution of Pooh and his friends from stuffed toys to animated characters.

Dreyfus: Politics, Emotion, and the Scandal of the Century
by: Ruth Harris

Hardcover. NY, Metropolitan Books, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket, 542 pages with index. In 1894, Alfred Dreyfus, a Jewish officer in the French army, was wrongfully convicted of being a spy for Germany and imprisoned on Devil's Island. Over the following years, attempts to correct this injustice tore France apart, inflicting wounds on the society which have never fully healed. But how did a fairly obscure miscarriage of justice come to break up families in bitterness, set off anti-Semitic riots across the French empire, and nearly trigger a coup d'etat? Drawing upon thousands of previously unread and unconsidered sources, prizewinning historian Ruth Harris goes beyond the conventional narrative of truth loving democrats uniting against proto-fascists. Instead, she offers the first in-depth history of both sides in the Affair, showing how complex interlocking influences--tensions within the military, the clashing demands of justice and nationalism, and a tangled web of friendships and family connections--shaped both the coalition working to free Dreyfus and the formidable alliances seeking to protect the reputation of the army that had convicted him. Dublin: A Portrait
by: V. S. Pritchett /Evelyn Hofer (Photographer)

Hardcover. NY, Harper & Row, 1st, 1967, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Fair, Hardcover in a worn, chipped, price-clipped dust jacket. Book is clean and bright with color and b&w photographs by Evelyn Hofer. "Mostly Dublin as it was, in text, as it is, in photographs. Mr. Prichett...provides a historical perspective, indeed devotes himself to this to the near exclusion of current sights. These he leaves to Miss Hofer, whose portraits of aged revolutionaries, mods, seminaries speak a thousand words, whose delineations of Mountjoy Square, the Port are exquistely etched & tinged. The Earl of Wicklow, Lord Mayne, Sean O'Faolain, the death mask of James Joyce ~ high great names; Trinity College, Kilmainham Jail ~ historical presences are here. Taking as his main theme the relations with the English, Mr. Pritchett notes that "the inevitable politics remain, but the quarrel is over." Front flap creased, clean copy.

Dueling; The Cult of Honor in Fin-de-Siecle Germany
by: McAleer, Kevin

Hardcover. Princeton NJ, Princeton University Press, 1st, 1994, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 268 pages. The question of what it takes "to be a man" comes under scrutiny in this sharp, often playful, cultural critique of the German duel--the deadliest type of one-on-one combat in fin-de-siecle Europe. At a time when dueling was generally restricted to swords or had been abolished altogether in other nations, the custom of fighting to the death with pistols flourished among Germany's upper-class males, who took perverse comfort in defying their country's weakly enforced laws. From initial provocation to final death agony, Kevin McAleer describes with ironic humor the complex protocol of the German duel, inviting his reader into the disturbing mindset of its practitioners and the society that valued this socially important but ultimately absurd pastime. Duncan Phyfe and the English Regency, 1795-1830
by: Nancy McClelland, Edward Knoblock (Foreword)

Softcover. NY, Dover Publications, reprint, 1980, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 364 pages with 295 b&w plates. Originally published as a hardcover in 1939. In this, the definitive work on Duncan Phyfe, Nancy McClelland, noted authority on the history of American antiques, recounts with keen appreciation the story of his life and work. She identifies the English Regency style, tells how the style developed, shows how it influenced Phyfe, and then describes both the man himself and numerous examples of his furniture construction -- his tables, chairs, sofas, sideboards, beds, etc. Accompanying the text are many fine photographs of famous Regency homes and furniture, houses built during the Classical Revival in America, and scores of Phyfe's masterpieces. Succeeding chapters, also enriched with photographs of surviving pieces, describe work by Phyfe's competitors -- Lannuier, Michael Allison, John Gruez, John Seymour, Samuel McIntire, Nehemiah Adams, Henry Connelly, etc. -- and work by Phyfe known to have been bought by specific customers. Examination of Pharisaic Traditions Supplemented by Semuel Da Silva's Treatise on the Immortality of the Soul
by: Uriel Da Costa

Hardcover. NY, E.J. Brill, 1st, 1993, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 578 pages plus charts, b&w photos in rear. Translation and notes by H.P. Salomon and I.S.D. Sassoon. Da Costa's long-lost book rejects the divine origin of the rabbinic tradition. His insight was that what he calls Pharisaism is irreconcilable with the religion of the Pentateuch and therefore cannot derive from the same source. He claims, for example, that the Law of Moses does not allow for a belief in an afterlife for individual human beings. Concomitantly he denied the Mosaic origin of the notion of eternal punishment. The rabbinic reading of the Mosaic Law appeared to him almost as great a falsification as the Christian one. Yet there could be no reversion to Christianity and despite his deep rift with the synagogue he still believed in ultimate redemption for the Jewish people. As he so dramatically declares in his closing sonnet, Israel's rehabilitation depends on its shedding man-made doctrines, and holding fast to the Law in its purity.

French Rural History: An Essay on Its Basic Characteristics
by: Marc Bloch

Hardcover. Berkeley, University of California, 1st US, 1966, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, price-clipped dust jacket. 258 pages, b&w illustrations. Written in 1929, when Marc Bloch was 42 years young, page after page of this book infects with the exhuberance of a difficult project turning out well. Bloch chose to write a history of the social impact of economic events on everyday life. Back then that meant to take a long and winding road through uncharted territory. For documentary evidence on how the common people lived by working the land - on "oxen, wheeled ploughs or crop rotations" - was scarce and much of it had to be drawn from neighbouring disciplines. Considered a classic in it's field, this is the first US edition, translated from the French by Janet Sondheimer. Dust jacket spine faded, otherwise a clean, tight copy.

From Adams to Steiglitz: Pioneers of Modern Photography
by: Nancy Newhall

Softcover. NY, Aperture, 1st, 1999, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 172 pages. Nancy Newhall wrote some of the most incisive work ever published on the inner lives of the photographers who shaped the medium. Her friendship with photographers such as Paul Strand, Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Weston, Ansel Adams, and Helen Levitt, to name a few, lends her writing a vibrancy rarely found in essays on photography. Newhall was one of the few people to gain access to the inner circle--and thoughts--of the imposing Alfred Stieglitz, and her intimate portrait of him, previously unpublished, reveals a man of genius, humor, and kindness. Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel: Encyclopaedia of the Philosophical Sciences in Basic Outline
by: Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel

Softcover. UK, Cambridge University Press, reprint, 2015, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 358 pages. Science of Logic , first published between 1812 and 1816, is the work in which Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel outlined his vision of logic. Hegel's logic is a system of dialectics, i.e., a dialectical metaphysics: It is a development of the principle that thought and being constitute a single and active unity. Science of Logic also incorporates the traditional Aristotelian syllogism: It is conceived as a phase of the "original unity of thought and being" rather than as a detached, formal instrument of inference. For Hegel, the most important achievement of German idealism, starting with Immanuel Kant and culminating in his own philosophy, was the argument that reality (being) is shaped through and through by thought and is, in a strong sense, identical to thought. Thus ultimately the structures of thought and being, subject and object, are identical. Since for Hegel the underlying structure of all of reality is ultimately rational, logic is not merely about reasoning or argument but rather is also the rational, structural core of all of reality and every dimension of it. Clean, like new.

George Catlin and His Indian Gallery
by: George Catlin , Brian W. Dippie, et al.

Hardcover. Norton/Smithsonian, 1st, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 288 pages. From the foremost collection of the artist's work, a remarkable portrait of Native American life. In 1832, George Catlin-showman, entrepreneur, and artist-made the first of four trips into Indian country, painting as he went, in a wonderfully spontaneous, if somewhat naive style. His ambition was to paint every tribe. He fell short. But what he did achieve, and the subject of this splendid volume, is a remarkable look into the faces and daily activities of Native Americans before their lands and their numbers were so radically diminished. And while Catlin was clearly influenced by the idea that Indians were Noble Savages (rapidly acquiring the vices of the white man while losing their "savage" virtues), his passion for his work is evidence of a profound respect and affection for his subjects, clearly demonstrated in this magnificent book. 275 illustrations, 150 in color.

Germany 1923: Hyperinflation, Hitler's Putsch, and Democracy in Crisis
by: Volker Ullrich / Jefferson Chase (Translator)

Hardcover. NY, Liveright, 1st, 2023, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket, 432 pages, b&w illustrations. As the great Austrian writer Stefan Zweig confided in his autobiography, written in exile, "I have a pretty thorough knowledge of history, but never, to my recollection, has it produced such madness in such gigantic proportions." He was referring to the situation in Germany in 1923. It was a "year of lunacy," defined by hyperinflation, a political system on the verge of collapse, and separatist movements that threatened Germany's territorial integrity. Most significantly, Adolf Hitler launched his infamous Beer Hall Putsch in Munich-a failed coup that nonetheless drew international attention and demonstrated the Nazis' ruthless determination to seize power. In Germany 1923, award-winning historian Volker Ullrich draws on letters, memoirs, newspaper articles, and other sources from the time to present a captivating new history of those explosive twelve months.
