The history of the inhabitants of Brandon Hall is told from the planting of a mulberry tree brought to England by Sir Francis Drake until the reign of Queen Victoria. No date but appears to be the first American edition. Originally published in London in 1881. Very nice copy, bright and clean.

It had already been a wet October and rivers were swollen and the ground saturated. Nine inches of rain fell in a thirty-six hour period and horrendous flooding began. Though all of New England was affected, Vermont was devastated. The state flooded from Newport to Bennington, with the Winooski River Valley the hardest hit. Eighty-five people died and 9,000 were left homeless." Clean copy.

Approx. size 11" by 9". Small tape repair to verso of rear panel otherwise excellent condition. Ford Madox Brown had already pioneered a style of painting which came to be known as Pre-Raphaelite before the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was founded in 1848. His beautifully observed landscapes anticipated the open-air effects of the Impressionists. His art was anti-academic, rejecting easy solutions, prettiness, and conventional Victorian formulae. He depicted children without sentimentality and poor people without condescension. This major monograph provides a general introduction to Brown's art based on new research; all of his important paintings are included, and each one is illustrated and described.
