Religion, Order, and Law: A Study in Pre-Revolutionary England
by: David Little

Hardcover. NY, Harper and Row, 1st US, 1970, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 269 pages. 'Weber's famous study of the 'affinity' between the rise of rational bourgeois capitalism in England and Calvinist-Puritanism has for almost a century stirred up a cloud of dust and misunderstanding. Toward the end of settling some of the dust no one has previously made such an acute analysis of pre-revolutionary England as has David Little. On the one hand, he has applied and extended Weber's method, especially in the sphere of the law-monopoly and corporation law-thus filling a gap in these studies. He has also delineated the sharply conflicting conceptions of social order and of legitimation. On the the other hand, Little has given an invaluable critical survey of the extensive literature of Weber's thesis. This is a landmark in the study of the complex and varying relations between religion and society.' -James Luther Adams, Harvard Divinity School. Clean copy.

Society and Puritanism in Pre Revolutionary England: Second Edition
by: Christopher Hill

Softcover. NY, Schocken Books, reprint, 1967, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 520 pages. In order to understand the English Revolution and Civil War we need to understand Puritanism. Using his consummate skill as a historian, Professor Hill suggests that there might have been non-theological reasons for supporting the Puritans, or for being a Puritan. He shows Puritanism as a living faith, answering the hopes and fears of yeomen and gentlemen, merchants and artisans. He looks at oath-taking, the Sabbath, bawdy courts, and poor relief and assesses the significance of the household (rather than the Parish) and the dignity of labor. He shows Puritanism in daily life and discusses the emergence of the seemingly paradoxical Puritan revolutionaries. Light bump to top corner of about 50 pages, clean copy.

Softcover. NY, Vintage, 1st pbk, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, pages. From Waterloo to Chirac's slandering of British cooking, the authors chart this cross-channel entanglement and the unparalleled breadth of cultural, economic, and political influence it has wrought on both sides, illuminating the complex and sometimes contradictory aspects of this relationship--rivalry, enmity, and misapprehension mixed with envy, admiration, and genuine affection--and the myriad ways it has shaped the modern world. The Eden-Eisenhower Correspondence, 1955-1957
by: Boyle, Peter G (Editor)

Hardcover. Chapel Hill NC, University of North Carolina Press, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. The personal correspondence between President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Prime Minister Anthony Eden during the time they were simultaneously in office tells the dramatic story of a relationship that began with great promise but ended in division and estrangement. Many of the letters have only recently been declassified, making it possible for the first time to publish this unique historic collection in its entirety. Peter G. Boyle's introduction, annotations, and conclusion provide context for the letters--details about the personalities and careers of Eden and Eisenhower and major issues that influenced the Anglo-American relationship up to 1955, such as relations with the Soviet Union, nuclear concerns, colonialism, the Middle and Far East, economic issues, and intelligence matters. The letters themselves offer an intimate look into the special connection between Britain and the United States through the often eloquent words of their leaders. Clean copy.

The Good Listener: Helen Bamber A Life Against Cruelty
by: Neil Belton

Hardcover. NY, Pantheon, 1st US, 1999, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. A magisterial achievement: part biography, part history, part moral meditation on the resurrection of torture as an instrument of political power in the twentieth century, The Good Listener tells the story of Helen Bamber, a good but complex woman now in her seventies, who has spent her life battling to bring the dark side of history into the light. In almost every situation in our century where mankind has demonstrated its capacity to intensify evil--during the Nazi Holocaust, in Algeria, Chile, Africa, the USSR, and Israel, as well as in postwar Britain and Germany--Bamber has served as a witness, an expert, or a reproach, as well as a repository of our collective memory of debasement. Her father, a Polish Jew, had been so obsessed by the Fascist threat that he would read to Helen from Goebbels' speeches, teaching her how corrupting and manipulative language can be. She went to Bergen-Belsen after World War II had ended, and upon her return to London she dedicated herself to caring for the young survivors of the camp. So began Bamber's brave devotion to the grim and dangerous task of undoing the work of the torturer--culminating, after her participation as a central force in Amnesty International, in her establishment in England of the Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture. Because Bamber's uncanny openness to others has been one of her great skills, Clean copy.

The Political Thought of John Locke: An Historical Account of the Argument of the 'Two Treatises of Government'
by: Dunn, John/John Locke

Softcover. Cambridge UK, Cambridge University Press, reprint, 1995, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 290 pages. This study provides a comprehensive reinterpretation of the meaning of Locke's political thought. John Dunn restores Locke's ideas to their exact context, and so stresses the historical question of what Locke in the Two Treatises of Government was intending to claim. By adopting this approach, he reveals the predominantly theological character of all Locke's thinking about politics and provides a convincing analysis of the development of Locke's thought. In a polemical concluding section, John Dunn argues that liberal and Marxist interpretations of Locke's politics have failed to grasp his meaning. Locke emerges as not merely a contributor to the development of English constitutional thought, or as a reflector of socio-economic change in seventeenth-century England, but as essentially a Calvinist natural theologian.
